What size is 5 pounds?
 

O.K., you all know I'm not a mom yet...and I have lots of questions. So here's one. I'd like to order some clothes for my boy. The breeder says he'll be about 5 lbs full grown. I'll get him when he's 12 weeks. What size do I order? Allot of clothes says to measure the back. How long is a 5 pounder???

What about a harness? I want one that I can use as soon as I get him. What size??? Anyone have some they've outgrown? (I prefer the soft ones...I think.)

All help and input is appreciated.

Cali was 1 lb at 10 weeks and is now almost 5 lbs. She wears a size small. The best way to get a harness is order one from YT member and they custom make them, Chattiesmom has great silk ones!

IF I were you (and I'm not:D) I would wait until you get your yorkie before I ordered adult-size clothing. A breeder can guess the size and that's all it usually is - a guess. You'll have plenty of time to contemplate what to buy for him as an adult. That way you won't have clothes that he might either never grow into or might quickly grow out of.;)

You can get a vest harness which closes with velcro and they grow with them for awhile.

Chewy was 2 pounds when I got him and ihave 3 harness that are all to big! i went out a got a cat harness and that is a bit better... he is 3.5 pounds now... Good luck finding one that fits...! Oh I will say if you get a teeshirt xsmall and put the harness over it it fits a little better....:D

The seller Barkatme on ebay has xsmall harnesses. i would sell you mine but i dont know what happened to it

It might be best to wait until you get your little one before you spend a lot of $$. That way you can do the measuring yourself and be sure that the measurements are accurate.

I know lots of people like to dress their dogs but just keep in mind that clothes will matt the hair. If you're looking to grow out the coat, then you might want to rethink the clothes idea.

If you are in the market for a step-in harness, mine are made of Dupioni Silk, I have over 25 colors to choose from, and I CAN fit your baby with an accurate chest measurement. The smallest one I have made to date was for a 1.25 lb. baby.:D

I would wait. unless you got bucks to spare. I bought the guiana pig harness when these guys were pups and they fit real good. but only for a short time. they grow fast. you never can tell what size they will be when they are adults. Ahia was supposed to be 6 lbs full grown and look at her today.. almost 10 lbs.

I ordered a precious :D x-small camo harness for Gus from Barkatme on ebay....unfortunately, it is still a little too big and not quite snug enough for me to feel comfortable taking him out in it-and he is now 4 1/2 months old and a little over 3 lbs or so. I have a pretty small soft adjustable harness that I bought at either Petsmart or Petco and it is by some brand that makes items especially for small dogs (it might be called tiny paws or something like that!). You could try getting one of those, because Gus was able to wear it when I got him at 8 weeks old and he was 2lbs. Hope that helps!

Every baby is different. Just like with people clothes, every brand is different with sizing. You might find one brand and buy the two smallest sizes, keep the tags on and then when you get the pup see which one fits. If the smaller one does, then keep the larger of the two to use later. If the larger one fits, return the smaller one. This is what I did with Gracie. I had several harnesses in several sizes and styles ready to go. At 8 weeks, my Gracie was already 2.3 lbs. At 3 months I know she is at least 3 lbs. You might consider buying an XXS or XS Puppia harness. It is the best I have found for these very little guys. Everything else either chokes them or allows them to escape. I did not try a step in harness, I should have. Be sure to check that the D rings are solid, not split. I think the velcro harnesses will be great for Gracie when she is older and no longer wants to try to escape her harness (and car seat) to sit on mom's lap while in the car. This is just my experience with Gracie.

First of all......you shouldn't beleive what the Breeder says b/c no one can tell you exactly how many pounds it will actually weigh full grown. There are alot of variables; genetics, type of Foods, amount of daily exercise etc.
Most Breeders will tell you it will be smaller b/c they know that, that's what the Buyer/New Owner wants to hear, not that they are all making it up?
You wouldn't believe how many times I hear "It's a Teacup" or it will be very small, even if you know the Parents, sometimes they follow their Grand Parents genes? Puppies grow @ different rates as well. You should probably wait to order clothes & accessories until you actually get your Puppy. And 5 lbs. on 1 Yorkie is'nt the same 5 lbs. on another Yorkie, Yorkie's still come in different sizes too! Some have short/long backs, some are shorter or taller than others, some are more Stocky & muscular and some are longer & leaner.
They even have different sizes of eyes, how they are set apart, even their noses are longer or shorter than others? That's why you will never find no 2 that look and act exactly alike! Besides when you do get your Puppy you will have plenty of other things going on for the first month or so, until you can get into a "Routine" for your Daily Life. Plus it's Safer at that age to buy things in Person, so you can try things on too. Good Luck:aimeeyork
