Thanks for this forum I just got Venus a few weeks ago. Trying to crate train her. I learned a lot of what all I've been doing wrong so far by reading this forum! For one, the crate was way too large, but did come with a divider, that I just put in. For two, I had her food and water in it with her. No wonder she was messing it up so much, along with the extra room! So these 2 things, I just fixed in the last hour. I'd never crate trained a dog before, and was really concerned about comfort. So I put a hand towel in there for her to sleep on. She's been constantly "going" on it. I change it out, in hopes a clean one will give her something to sleep on. Are you supposed to put anything at all for them to sleep on in the crate? She's been used to peeing and pooping on a hand towel, and seems now she won't even lay on it. |
Hi welocme to YT, this site is great for info! I think maybe out a blanket or something in there for her to sleep on. I think i am right in saying that yorkies obviously dont like sleeping in their own mess, so by using a small crate it should defer them from toileting in it. Good Luck puppy stages can be hard sometimes :) |
I would definitely put a blanket or something in there for her to lay on - usually dogs dont like to 'go' where they sleep, hence the reason for creating a tighter space in the crate by adding that divider. This way she doens't have room to sleep in one end and use the other end as a bathroom. If she's still young, she will need to go out to pee quite frequently - and if she doesn't get out, young puppies just can't hold it - when they have to go, they go! Just make sure that when she is in there she is let out often enough so that she has a chance to pee. |
I love the name Venus...Goddess of Love....awwwwww:wub: |
Welcome to YT! Can't wait to see pics of your little darlin' |
Well, I take her out every 1-1/2 to 2 hours, 3 tops unless its when I sleep. Right now, having to use a hand towel, cause I don't have any spare blankets. Now to get used to feeding her out of her crate! I'm retired so being here most of the time, isn't a problem. I have another Yorkie, his name is Adonis. My sister moved in with me back in 02 and trained him, cause she wasn't working. Sister now lives elsewhere, so I'm having to learn from scratch. Thank you all so much for the replies. |
I love the name Adonis too...you are GOOD with names....i'm thinking I'm going to talk my hubby into buying me a little lover man since I got Whiskey for him-he named her Whiskey AGoGo...I have already picked out a name for him but just might ask you to help me think of a different one when I get him....hopefully it will be soon!!!:D |
I had some help naming Adonis! He was named after a greek god, and Adonis means "beautiful young male". Naming Venus, I looked up greed goddesses, lol. Think Venus means something like "the beauty of spring". If I ever get another yorkie, dunno what I'll name him/her now. I do know one thing, I will always have a yorkie. Adonis has been my heart and soul for 5 years. Never thought I'd ever say this, but love that guy, better than I ever loved any man! |
Here is advice on crate training a yorkie. I have no advice on this topic, since I don't crate train. The article starts a little ways down the page: http://www.shooterdog.com/alexfaq2.htm |
Hello and welcome to YT!!!! I would get her a small bed and a blanky, she needs something to sleep on, she may think the towel is her pee pad. Good luck! |
I attached a water bottle to the crate so he can drink when he wants with out spilling it... (Like a rabbit bottle with the little ball in the tube. |
Welcome! Aaawwww... I was never able to crate train Pepper... he went in it no matter how small it was. But he was very young when I got him, only 9 weeks. Maybe now (at 14 weeks) it would be a different story as he's trained on pee pads almost 100 % (I stuck with x-pen and following him everywhere once he was out) and he seems to get the idea that blanket is only for sleep/play time :D ... Good luck |
Make the crate comfy (small bed, blanket, or something), just use something you can wash if she does piddle. Welcome to YT, and congrats on your new baby. I love your names!!! |
welcome to yorkie talk, im gina... glad you joined us.... |
Mimi did the same thing when I first brought her home. I was getting so angry because Timmy never pottied in his crate. I had a pillow in her crate and also used the devider. I covered the pillow with a pee pad and then slipped a pillow cover on top so the pee wouldn't soak in through the pillow and all I needed to wash was the pillow cover. Everytime she pee in her crate I would make it smaller and smaller. FINALLY..she got it!! I just felt so bad because she had a really small space but was enough for her to stand and possibly turn. Now they are 100% potty trained and they sleep with us:D |
