would you use a spay clinic? there is a clinic having a few spay and neuter days in RI and i was going to use them to spay snickers... but i have been reading alot of threads on spaying lately and now i find myself wondering if this is a bad idea?? her vet is 4x the cost should i just wait and do it there? would you use the spay clinic? all opinions and advice is appriciated... |
ummmm nope... nooooooooooooo thankyou,, just my opinion |
First let me congratulate you on your new pups:) I have not used a spay clinic but my girlfriend uses them all the time. She does rescue and has never had a problem. Also my daughter, who has a pug used them. She paid $50.00 and I paid $250.00 through my vet. Who's the fool? Harley was perfectly fine after he was neutered.(the pug) I was nervous and did not do it. I should have  My girlfriend stated to me that she would never pay full price when you can get it done for 1/4 of the price! She has used them for years and never had a problem. Good luck with you decision. |
Alot of people I know use the spay/neuter clinic and have terrific success for a fraction of the price..I will use it when the time comes!! Dawn |
its really hard to make a decision... honestly saving the $$ would be good for so many reasons... more money if they get sick vet viisits etc but i dont want to put her in harms way just to do it... i think i am more nervous because she is a little dog (6.5lbs) and i want to make sure she comes out of it ok and i LOVE her vet its just the expense of the spay... either way it will be done i was just looking for the advice and opinions either way thanks guys and if there are any more keep'em coming... |
another question with spaying... can someone help me out with what IS a safe procedure and what anesthesia SHOULD be used? i'm sorry if i come off a lil dumb but honestly i dont know and i want to make an informed decision... thanks everyone! that way i know what questions to ask  |
no matter what way you choose , your still gonna be nervous and go crazy that day, it happened to all of us.. it will be ok, just think possitive and we are here for you ok.... |
Anyone who knows me knows how much I love my girl Coco. When it was time for her to get spayed I made an appointment with the vet. He was going to charge me like $300 and even though money was a bit tight I didn't care. I wanted the best for her. Though as the time got closer I got really nervous and thought about bad things happening. I took that as a sign that I wasn't comfortable with the vet, and trusted my mommy instinct and cancelled the appointment. I had heard of Tony LaRue's Animal Rescue hospital in my area so I checked it out. I have never even seen a vets office as clean as this place. I spoke to the doctors, with the staff. They were so amazing and only charged my $50 for her spay with antibiotics and painkillers. Coco was herself within hours and to this day you cannot see or feel the scar whatsoever. I have heard horror stories of vets who botch the spay/neuther but I was so happy I went with the spay/netuer clinic. I wasn't as scared/nervous with them when I made the appointment and Coco was less than 2 lbs at the time. I say, do your research, and if they use Isoflourine gas, and if the facilities are clean and the staff is great, why not. Trust your instinct and go with it. Sometimes it's best to use a vet, and sometimes its not. Just my opinion though. I don't think you love your baby any less by saving some money and using a clinic if they are good. |
TRUST YOUR INSTICT... yes , yes, yes |

I would just ask if they use Isoflorane gas and if it is same-day surgery. If they intend for you to leave her overnight, I would be afraid that they might leave her under anesthesia too long and that can be a danger. Otherwise, I wouldn't be afraid of it. |
these are all great responses and i will ask all these questions and check'em out i am really comfortable w/my vet but i dont know enough about this clinic so i will ask lots of questions thank goodness everyone is here to help with this i will keep everyone posted and if there are more opinions post away!!!!! |
If you decide to take her to your vet and they want to keep her overnight, be sure to inquire if anyone will be there with her all night. Otherwise, take her home. |
I wouldn't be too nervous about the best surgeon is one that performs surgery regularly, these clinics perform far more surgeries than your regular vet. The ASPCA in NY only charges 25 bucks its free if your low income and one of the vets that perform the surgery in house, (he volunteers) is one of the best in the country if you go to his vet clinic in park slope brooklyn its 350-400, go to the ASPCA its free or 25 bucks. |
I've always had my cats done at the spay/neuter clinic and they've always been fine. They do so many of these procedures! Do what feels comfortable and right for your furbaby! |
I would check out the place before you decide. Talk to the vets that will preform the surgery. Make sure that you have a blood panel run on her to make sure she will do fine in surgery and make sure they use Isoflorane. I have taken mine to spay/neuter clinics and have had no problems with them. I say if they do what you ask and answer all your questions, and you are comfortable with the vets and their answers and the place is clean, I would go for it. |
I took my first Yorkie to the Humane Society because they charged less than $20 to spay her. When we dropped her off we saw a lot of huge dogs there and no little ones. There were like 60 dogs getting spayed/neutered that day and I was so sad and felt like she would be left in a cage and wouldn't get any special attention. :-( I was afraid that she would be scared with all the big dogs there. :-( After we left I felt soooo bad, my poor little baby. But she was fine and they did a great job. My second dog I had neutered at the vet because I felt guilty taking another pup to the HS. He was the only one having surgery that day and it was more peace of mind for me think that he was being spoiled by the girls at the vet. If I had to do it over again I would have taken the first one to the vet and paid the extra $$. I just felt guilty because they are so spoiled. |
If it was reputable.........yes, I would. |

sooo i checked with my vet and she charges $339 for a spay and its an overnight procedure the local spay clinic is $20 for the preop and $115 for the procedure And i asked they use isoflorine for anesthesia) hmmm i am going to wait to here back from the vet humane society here they assist with the cost of a spay if you want to use your own vet maybe they will have some good news.... if not i will have to suck it up and do it anyway :) she is too important to me not to... i'll keep you posted |
oops forgot to add the details... the clinic i called today didnt give too much info it would have been gone over in the preop appt... the other clinic i was originally going to take her to called today and said now they are only doing cats?? i have to find somewhere else :thumbdown which is fine just not really loving the way that was handled but i am glad cuz now i wouldnt use them anyway my vets price includes laser surgury if needed?? preop bloodwork, pain meds, the actual procedure, and the hospital stay i'm hoping the program around here might help bring that price down just a lil i would rather use my vet but not sure how i feel about her staying overnight... they said because the procedure is invasive its required to moniter temps etc.. |
another good question to ask is that if they are staying overnight, find out if someone is going to be there overnight too or if the animals are left alone....I just made Ladys appt. to be spayed only to find out they want her to stay, yet no one will be there with her. |
If you don't want her to stay overnight - ask them if someone will be staying with her ALL night... If not, then you can sign a release to take her home overnight.:D |
We used a clinic for our two and they were happy and recovered in no time, but you have to check out the place for yourself and really trust your gut on it!! |
i decided... to go with my vet.... esp since snickers needs 3 baby teeth pulled out too and my vet is really really fantastic... i am waiting to see if i can get a reduced spay thru her (i had to apply) but if not its ok... i think its worth the $$ i think i had said it before but she charges around $330 but it includes bloodwork, laser surgury, meds, overnight at the hospital and YES there is someone there all night but they do require it for the pups safety i will keep you posted as to when we are doing this exactly! |
I guess it really does depend on your preference i had both of my cats neutered through the vet but it was only like $30.00 i would've had them done with a HS but i missed the day i agree that they do hundreds and they know what they are doing but if you want your baby pampered and have more of a say so then use your vet but know vets aren't always in it for the safety of your pet a lot of them just want your money as for me and Peeka i don't know what i will do with him but when the time comes i will research every vet in the city to find the best i am really wanting to find a new vet for him anyway. |
I'm glad you're going to your own vet. I had my cats done at the Humane Society but I think it might be more like an assembly line there. Some vets don't realize that these tiny dogs require different treatment. A larger dog can handle their vaccinations all at once but a little dog can't. I know it costs more but better safe than sorry. I never thought about all this before I got Debbie. I was lucky to find a vet that does though. She has me bring her in for all shots two weeks apart. After the first time, she doesn't charge for the office visit, just the vaccination. She still does this even though Debbie is full grown, she only weighs 3 pounds. She also did not require an overnight stay for her spay. I think your dog is better off at home with you especially if there is no overnight staff. Maybe some people don't know enough to keep an eye on them but I think most people that love their dogs enough to join a forum would be intelligent enough to know what to do. |
your vet or a spay clinic Quote:
I missed Monday all night and when I went to pick her up I was SO happy to see she was completely herself ... the stitches healed perfectly (better than my C-section even) .... and there have been no problems. The only thing that bothered me was that they had to shave her leg to put the IV in ... she looked so fragile, but she healed and her hair grew back .... she was 6 months old. She is now 4 years old. Debbie |
The reason I would, is because my neices best friend works there, and has been with this vet for about 10 years in their spay/neuter clinic. The vet that does the spay/neuter is also my vet at her own clinic at a different location. They do the spay/neuter at a totally different clinic, at discount rates, I suppose because there is a really big need for discounted spay/neuter in my city. |
