Should A 2 Year Old Be Neutered Still? My Miko is 2 years old he weighs 3 pounds and has not be neutered. I was seriously thinking about doing it soon, because I have issues about him peeing and lifting his leg still, I wondered if Neutering at this point will help with that? Does anyone know? and if it really isn't going to make a difference, I rather not see my "little" guy go through it, this has been my debate for a long time, and that's why I still have not done it Any Suggestions? . |
I do not know (sorry) but I am in the same situation as you, but my Georgie is 15 months old. So thank you for bringing this up. |

Neutering is a good idea unless you are planning to have him become a daddy. It's much healthier for them. I've had all male Yorkies, three neutered when they were young. Two lifted their legs and one squatted. Sean, my newest guy, lifts his leg. |
I just had Mo my newest 3 yo addition neutered. He was great at lifting his leg and marking his "territory" inside and out. A few weeks before I had him neutered I always wore a belly band on him in the house. I would take it off at night and of course whenever I took him outside. His appt was this past thursday and I haven't wanted to put a band on him because I didn't want to rub his sore area. He has not lifted his leg one time to mark in the house since then but he will still do it outside--so I know it doesn't hurt to do it. I am hoping that perhaps he has learned not to do it in the house from wearing bands. We will see. He doesn't seem to mind the bands though because as soon as we come in from outside he "squats" for me to put on his band--which cracks me up because he is the tiniest thing I have ever seen and the squat is not necessary. lol So, time will tell. He doesn't seem to stink as much--I'm glad I did it. |
I agree.........you should neuter him. |
Daisy's Goen Crazy Miko is so cute I wish I lived closer i would love to use him as a stud for my Daisy Mae. They are so close in color. She is from florida as am I. I grew up in the Tampa area. Thats where my mom and her parents still live. |
My second yorkie (now gone) was not neutered and I had reached the end of my rope with his marking his territory wherever he wanted. He was 18 mos. old at the time. So my vet at the time recommended that he be neutered, as he said "All his problems are in his testicles". We had him neutered and the difference was night and day. He still lifted his leg to pee, but did not do 'little squirts' to mark his territory. From then on he was housebroken. Hope this helps.:) |
Should a 2-year-old be neutered? Yes, definitely, if you might not be able to prevent unwanted pregnancies. Might it stop the marking? It might, it might not. From what I've read, there's not a definitive answer to that queston. If his marking is "driving you round the bend", it may well be worth a try. I would discuss it with your vet first. There seems to be conflicting information out there. One vet, for instance, said to me that it now appears that in small dogs, much of their testosterone seems to originate from sources other than their testicles (the brain, I believe, is primarily the other source). Obviously, that is in direct conflict with what Amanda's vet said. So, who knows... |
I have often read that the chances of an un-neutered dog getting testicular cancer is rare. At this point I agree with the others he probably won't stop lifting his leg. Is he marking the house at all? If not to be honest I don't know that I would get him fixed. I know that Diesel isn't fixed. I have no plans of breeding him and the chances of him getting a female pregnant is VERY slim! Good luck ! Michelle |

:bravo: Go Mo!!! |
When dogs are placed through rescue groups, they are always neutered even if they are elderly. The marking might not stop as it is sometimes a habit but it's still a good idea to neuter. My little girl marks outside and she's been spayed since six months of age! |
THanks for all the replies, I definetly am going to look into neutering I'm not sure if this will take care of the problem, but I'm going crazy with his leg lifting. |
Getting a Yorkie Hi I have not posted before. I found this site because I was doing research on yorkies. I will get one soon my question is if the male squats does he pee on his front legs and how do you deal with that. I'm trying to learn all I can to get ready for my new family member any info will be appreciated. |
Older males can be neutered ---never too old! And - unless you plan to use this male for breeding (which few of us do) -- he should be neutered. Carol Jean |
