name change?? confused.... Well, is it going to confuse my boy too much? Couldn't think of anything better than J.J when I got him. But he's starting to shape up like a dog not a puppy teddy bear anymore and I'm starting to wish I'd given him a more 'adult' name... I've had him for 5 weeks now and he comes when called 'poopy', 'poochie', 'baby boy', 'mushi', ... he mostly comes to any word with that specific tone of voice reserved only for him... Am I confusing the poor thing? I did so much research now and I'm thinking of renaming him (or adding a new better name), - the choices are Cosmo, Luigi or Ollie (Olliver), or Pepper. Any advice? |
I've heard about some people who have changed names of dogs they adopted from rescues. The dogs seem to learn their new names so yours probably will, too. Most important is to be consistent. I also call Sean by other names. He mostly responds to my voice but does know his name. |
I truly believe dogs come to the sound of your voice not the actual name. Georgie come to Pa Pa, smudgins, porgie, dorgie, poo poo head, boobees and the list goes on. It's all in the way I say it even it I say "where mommy's little boy" he comes running. |
My dog comes to a variety of names. I'd just start using the new name in with the old name and slowly phase out the old one. I think its just your voice that makes them perk up and pay attention anyway. PS Just tested my Jake with the new name "farty bum" and he responded .... but maybe that because he just ..... ahhh never mind :D |
Tone of voice and body language are more important to your dog than Human words. To ease your little one into a new name, try using the old name and new name (as one word) to begin with and then wean off the old name, using the same tone of voice. Good luck! |
we got Buckeye at the age of 2 yrs. He went by another name before that. he adjusted very quickly. Just use the name often and whith a happy voice. |
I think he will be ok. I agree its more to do with your voice rather than calling a name. When i got Mitzi-Mae, her name was molly and i changed it and she learnt her new name fine and she was 7 months old. |
My dog comes to a variety of names also.........what makes the diff. is my tone of voice...........I baby talk and she knows it's with her.........lol |
Name change? No problem! 6 yrs ago I became the mommy of a poodle who's elderly mommy had passed a'way. I changed her name and she was fine. She didn't have a very good life before she came to me. I agree with the post that said they respond to tone of voice, body language and most of all LOVE!!! She was fine with the change, and after a little consistency, she learned it perfectly. The nicknames people call their dogs crack me up. I too have several for my yorkie and shih-poo. Their names are Otis and Oliver (Otie and Ollie) but they answer to monkey face, bubby, baby dog, sugar butt, puddin...etc. You can tell how much we love our doggies!!!!:) |
I am sure he will do fine with a name change. I call Chachi and Jewels different names all the time. |
I changed Maggies name from kacee. I call her fatty, baby and other names but when I actually call her, I make sure I call her maggie. Hubby calls her buttercup. I dont think its gonna be confusing as long as you call her by one name when you actually are calling her to come to you or to do something you tell her to do. oops, him I mean. |
I think if you say it wilth love and a smile he will come to anything you call him...BTW i LOVE the name Luigi...sounds like a little lover man... :animal-pa |
Go ahead and change it. Dogs learn new names almost overnight! We had a bassett that responded to my husband's nicknames. "Stupid, Bucket Head, etc." She ate it up simply because it was him paying attention to her. And before anyone says anything about it, my husband loved that dog. She actually WAS pretty stupid. lol |
my b/f calls lexi... lex luther and mousawii and takowii,, and she knows , but he is a sick son of a gun.. |
To repeat everyone else- go ahead and change it. I got Sugar at 16 months and changed his name. I was shocked how fast he got used to it. Seriously- it was like a day or two. I guess it really is all about tone of voice. |
