Dewclaws? Does your furbaby have them? I just realized (and yes I have had my pup for 3 weeks now!) That he has his dewclaws. My other yorkie, Peek did not have his so it looks a little weird to me? I really didnt even know about dewclaws till we got our great dane pup and some rude person at Petsmart commented to me on why she still has them? But anyway, I was just wondering if its normal for them to be there? I dont care, There is NO WAY I would have them removed or anything! Just curious what the breed standard is. |
I think most breeders get them removed between 3-5 days after birth. Neither Kona or Bernie have theirs. |
The dew claws are normally removed at the same time as the tails are docked. Why didn't your breeder have it done? My vet charges me the same price to get the tails docked and dew claws removed at the same time. |
I have NO idea why the breeder didnt get the tail and the claws done at the same time? Weird, right!? I wonder if I should call him and ask him? |
Anyone grooming your yorkie will need to be made aware that she still has her dew claws so they don't injure the tender membrane with trimmers. I don't know why they weren't removed. |
Adrianna has her dewclaws as well. I don't mind them. Like someone above me mentioned, just tell your groomer about them. |
Most breeders have them removed right along with the tails. The expense is very minimal. I have never had any problems with any that have had them left. Just keep an eye on the toenail growth, as they tend to grow curved and can quickly become embedded in the skin. |
dew claws Shylah still has her's and I think her tail is longer than a docked tail, but not as long as it would be if it wasn't docked. I am not sure what the breeder was thinking. I just make sure when I get her nails clipped that they know to do those too. I can't imagine getting them removed now. That would be like removing your thumb. As far as her tail, I think it looks like a little propeller when she gets excited!! I love it!!:animal37 |
Riley's were all removed but for some reason Jo's breeder left his front dewclaws. I wish they weren't there but I've heard it's hard on them to have them removed later on. I do my own grooming and I do keep an eye on the nail growth but like I said, I wish they had been removed. |
All of mine have had them removed. It is one of the things I look for most in buying a puppy. I can't figure out why a breeder would not do it at the same time as getting the tails docked. It is inexpensive and is better for them to have it done. I prefer to have them removed but if they don't I just know that I have to be careful and keep them trimmed all the time. I have seen firsthand what dewclaws can do, it is not pretty. Just make sure you keep it trimmed and I would also file it so that it does not get caught on anything because their nails are always sharp after you cut them and can get caught on something very easily. :) |
i guess romeo had his removed. i'm not sure what they are. (first dog) |
2 of mine still have their dew claws, on a whole they haven' been a problem, however duchess ahd a double dew and it curled round like a spiral. I found it very hard to cut. The vet tied a bit of elastic around it and after 1 week it fell out. :) |
Both of mine have none I have 2 from 2 different Breeders and both have had their dewclaws removed. In fact Abigail just had 3 puppies this past Saturday and I will be taking them to the Vet. for the first time tomorrow afternoon. So I will have their tails docked and their dewclaws removed. I don't think it is a matter of preference, but it is based on the Breed Standard and I as a Responsible Breeder have to follow that Standard regardless of any personal preference, besides it's not about "Me", it's for their safety. I know that 2 out of the 3 puppies are already "Sold" and I did not ask their new owners what their preference was? B/C I thought it was not a choice but a necessity? |
So then do you think its too late to have them removed when he goes in to be fixed? It KILLLS me to think of doing that to him, but if its for his best interest in the long run, I would.:( |
