New mom will not eat I have a yorkie that had puppies 10 days ago. The only time she will eat is if I hand feed her. Can anyone give me "any" suggestions? I am so afraid her milk will dry up, she will waste away. PLEASE help. Thank you!!! |
Have you tried mixing her food with cottage cheese, boiled chicken or scrambled egg? |

When you scramble the eggs, don't use butter or seasonings such as salt. The pan will be messy, but who cares. Mix it in with her food. This will probably work for you for a couple of days or so and then she may turn her nose up and you'll have to try something else. Don't go to greasy or seasoned foods. Boiled boneless, skinless chicken breasts will tempt her also. In addition, I'd give her Nutri-Cal. That way you know she is getting atleast some of what she needs. Good luck and let us know what works and if you need any more ideas. Also, make sure she is drinking her water. |

Not eating can be a sign of pyometra (uterine infection) - check her temperature, if it is 103 or higher, go straight to the vet. Also check her discharge. It should not smell. It could also be a sign of mastitis, once again check her temperature (but not all have a fever) and check her teats and make sure they are not knotted, hot or inflamed looking. She needs to be drinking and eating. I also would give Nutrical sometimes this stimulates their appetite. I also would give chicken broth (natural with low sodium to drink). It's best that she eats a puppy balanced diet of dry or canned (so she can receive all the proper nutrients), but if she won't give boiled chicken and rice (cottage cheese and yogurt are fine too, mine don't like eggs). Peanut butter is too high in fat and could cause pancreatitis and an upset stomach which is exactly what you don't need right now. |
Has she been outside for a nice brisk walk? Definetly check the things Lacey's mom mentioned. Such a fine line to walk. Hopefully she won't get sick from the mixture of different foods. If she doesn't perk up, get her to the vet. Are you sure all the placentas came out? |
boil a chicken. shred the meat to feed her. mix the broth with her dried puppy food. cottage cheese, regular cheese, goat's milk will help her. is she on calcium supplements? |
Try Terry Shumski's Pudding Recipe. She was a well known breeder and judge of yorkies. She did a lot to help Yorkies with Liver Shunt too. PUDDING RECIPE Mix large 4 cup size vanilla pudding, 1/2 cup sugar, 4 cups of milk, and 4 egg yolks. Cook on low heat to pudding consistency and offer to new mother at body temperature. She can eat as much as she wants. Has never caused diarrhea and brings in abundance of milk!!! OR from scratch... mix the following in a saucepan and cook to pudding consistency. 2/3 cup sugar 6 tablespoons cornstarch 1/2 teas salt 4 cups milk (or one can evap milk plus equal parts water to make quart) 4 egg yolks 3 teasp vanilla. feed with syringe, on spoon, or let eat from bowl. full of protein and nourishment....have never had it cause diarrhea. You could try puppy milk if she's not eating. If she's not drinking, you may want to keep some Pedialyte on hand so she doesn't get dehydrated. If nothing works, I would have the vet check her out. Have you taken her temp? Good luck! |
Looks as though it is going to be eggs and yogurt right now, don't about later. I have taken her temp, it's 101. She seems happy, not lethargic, her tail wags:D . She just wants to eat out of my hands. I can handle that as long as she will eat. It is a bit messy though, eggs and yogurt running off fingers. Thanks for all your help, I will keep yuo updated. By the way, the puppies are doing great. Three girls and a boy. What does white spots on paws mean? Three have it on their feet, could they be parti carriers? Thanks again,:kiss: |
A little white on the chest and toes isn't abnormal. It will grow out. Glad to hear they are all doing well. |
I fshe'll eat canned, give her canned food. Please be sure she's drinking, lots. If she's not, take a syringe and fill with water and then you'll be sure she's drinking. They should be drinking probably 3x as much as normal now that they're lactating, maybe more. That helps increase their milk supply also. And listen to anything Lacy's mom says lol concerning white paws, I have 3 week maltese/yorkie mix puppies and they each have white on their paws. I've never seen I full breed yorkie with white paws.
