I need some advice please.. Reece was eating the Royal Canin Puppy Mini food when we brought him home and I noticed that over the last day or two that when he eats it, he doesnt chew it just picks it up and swallows it!!! This afternoon he was gagging or trying to throw up...about an hour after he ate. I bought some sience diet canned food and thought he would do better on that and he gobbled it right up! Should I keep him on the canned food a while or should I mix the kibble with it? He is nine weeks on Saturday and was chewing it up a few days ago. I know the answer seems simple...canned food....but I wondered if it would give him softer or runny stool? I have always given my dogs kibble in the past so this canned food is new to me. Also the can says for his weight and age he should have 3/8 of a cup a day and I know he would eat around 1/4 of the can or more and that seems like waaaaaaaaay too much. I am so confused... Dawn |
Cant someone help a confused yorkie mommy?? lol |
can you try to hand feed him his kibble one pc at a time? He really needs to eat the hard food to help his teeth. When I give Lillie soft food it makes her stools so soft so I avoid it. |
I have been giving Sahara the canned science diet and it does not give her soft stool and she seems to like it. I also give her science diet dry and eukanuba small bites. She is so tiny so I let her eat as much as she wants, I never restrict what they want to eat and in the puppy stage I encourage them to eat. I find when they get older they just eat what they need. How small is he? If he is very tiny I would stick with the soft for now and in a couple of weeks give both, then somewhere down the like just go to the dry and occasionally give canned as a treat! However this is just what I do and maybe someone has a better suggestion. |
If you start feeding canned, it will be hard to switch back to dry. Dry is much better for their teeth, but you could brush every day to help with this problem. Feeding dry is so much more convenient and you don't have the risk of any bacteria developing on the wet food when left out for more than 20 minutes. I free feed mine leaving dry out all the time and so far I have never had any weight problems. I would recommend soaking the dry food with warm water for now so he doesn't develop a taste for just canned. Then when he gets a little older you can stop moistening it and it will be the same taste he is use to. |
Thanks for the advice everyone. I think Ill just moisten down the hard food for a while instead of the canned food. I dont want him to have bad teeth thats for sure. He is about 1 pound now. I did try to hand feed him each piece at a time but he just pops it in his mouth and swallows!! lol...oh boy what a clown he is. He is a good size, he isnt losing weight and rambuntious as heck so I suppose I shouldnt worry.. Dawn |
I used to give my baby the dry food the breeder gave me. She had it ground up in dry powder, well it got stuck to the roof of his mouth so i started grinding it up and putting a little water in it to moisten it for him. I let him chew on his rawhide bones (while i can watch him) and it helps with his teeth. |
