http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...vervaccination This is a thread entitled Overvaccination, here's the paragraph on Kennel cough, read the whole article. Also do a search here on YT many have come down with symptoms after getting the shot. On the other hand, Kennel Cough is very mild and usually goes away all by itself. It's just not worth vaccinating against when you take into account that very often, the vaccine causes the dog to develop the disease. Just like people with the flu shot. |
I am sure that a lot of vets recommend vaccinations that dogs don't really need, just to make extra money. But I am also sure many take their patients best interests to heart. I am sure if you talk to your vet he/she will be able to clear up any concerns you might have with this vaccination. Nikko is due for his annual checkup and boosters in about a week, and I am glad you brought this up because it is an important issue. If your vet left the decision up to you, maybe it really isn't necessary, otherwise he/she would have insisted on it. I would probably opt against it in this case. |

People cannot get flu from a flu shot. It is a killed virus. People sometimes get the flu after having gotten a flu shot, because the shot takes approx two weeks to take effect. Likewise, dogs who get bordetella vaccine in the shot form cannot get it from that vaccine, either, because it is a killed vaccine. The intranasal form is not a killed vaccine as I understand it. |
Mine all get bordetella shots. They go to dog parks, groomer, are around alot of dogs and I take them to work with me at times and they are once again around dogs. None of my dogs have ever had a reaction from a bordetella shot nor any other dogs around here that I know of. Furthermore, bordetella is required at alot of the places I take my dogs to, so they have to have the shot and I feel much better that they do. JMO |
If I didnt have to get the shot I wouldnt. My vet insists you get it and also my dogs go to a groomers so they have to have it. Jewels always has a reaction to this shot |
I think you really need to do what is in the best interest of your dog and you. When Sissy got her intranasal bordatella the day after I brought her home, she came down with kennel cough the next day. She didn't become feverish or anything else, just the cough that wracked her little body for several seconds (like she couldn't stop) each time she coughed. Sometimes the attacks would last for about 12 hour with only a minute or so between the coughing spell. It took two rounds of antibiotics and steriods for it to clear up. When she is due for her next round of shots, I will seriously be talking to my vet about not giving this again and will also discuss not giving the Lepto. |
