Harness problem :( My 9 week old yorkie is the apple of my eye. lots of energy and lots of love to give. The only problem I have is that when I put on her harness she instantly starts shivering, tail goes between her legs, ears down and refuses to walk or go potty outside. It is like she has an instant attitude. As soon as I take off the harness its like she has become mighty dog. She zips around the house like she is free and plays with the cat. Is there a harness you have that your dog does not mind. I live way out in the country and need to have a harness and leash on her so she doesn't zip off or the hawks don't get her. Any help would be appreciated. Laurie:( |
lexi did the same thing, actually she still runs from the harness, she hates it, they do get used to it.. just keep putting it on more than once a day, eventually she has to get used to it...good luck and be patient,it takes awhile.. |
1 Attachment(s) My Nikko hated his harness too. I bought him a traditional one and he would snarl and bite at it. Same went for the step in harness. Finally I bought him a Puppia harness and he loves it!! He gets so happy when I put it on him and he actually pushes his little head into it when I put it on.:D Puppia harnesses are really comfortable and soft and come in lots of stylish colors. I got mine from a pet store by my job but you can get them online too. I paid about $20 for mine but it is worth every penny and I will be getting him a few more in case they wear out. Here's what they look like: |
Mine hated it at first and now when they see the harness they get so excited because they know they are going out. Yesterday when I got home from work I decided I wanted to take them to the park so I grab their harness and told them to come on. As I was putting Timmy's on Mimi was whining so bad (she's a whiner) because she wanted hers on. They even help me by putting their heads in it..lol it's so funny. Just put it on her while she's in the house and give her treats. Soon she will realize that its a good thing and she's going out. |
Jakes not wild about his harness either. After I put the first part on, I praise him a lot, massage his back and generally fuss over him. I then fasten it at praise again. Its helped. |
Laurie, some of them take to harnesses immediately and some are a struggle. The only advice I can offer is for them to see that wearing their harness reminds them of something fun like going for a walk. Some take many months to get used to them and will chew at your fingers and their harnesses while you are trying to put the harness on them. Just be sure not to fuss at them and be patient and they will eventually be very, very happy to see the harness come out or will be eager to tell you they want to go for a walk by showing you where it is!:D |
Thanks everyone for your response, it gives me hope. I will take your advice YorkieUSA and make sure it is a fun adventure. Laurie |
In addition to making it a fun adventure, I'd make it treat time! In fact, if you aren't free-feeding, I would feed her while she has her harness on. First, though, I would probably put the harness away for a couple of days. Then, when you reintroduce it, be very positive about it. This is fun! Here are your treats! At 9 weeks, she isn't likely to run too far away from you and you will be right there to make sure that hawks don't get her, so a couple of days shouldn't matter. |
