How to stop the begging and whinning???? My 13 week nemo is causing us a little bit of a problem for the last few days. Everytime we sit down to eat his been begging and whinning/barking...but I am not sure if it's for scraps since we've never giving him any or for attention or maybe he just wants to get be with us since we occassionally eat in bed or in the living room on the couches, at which point we don't let him up.We've tried ignoring him...but I have to say Yorkies are very persistent when they want something huh. Any idea how to stop this...I'll be honest the most annoying is not during meals but overnight when he wants to be in bed with us. I don't mind to be honest but to be woken up at 3 in the morning from a bark is annoying. I am doing or giving wrong ideas to my Nemo? John |
Hi John, are you crate training Nemo? It is always best to ignore them, if you give in to them or engage with them, you're just gonna re-inforce this behaviour. Stick in there, things will get better :) |
Can't seem to get him into the crate....well that incorrect he goes in the crate when he wants to and then he doesn't let us close it. No matter what treat, toy we put in their he will go in and leave his back paws out so we don't close it on him. I find this strange considering during the day and night he sleeps in the grate. My sister resently brought him a bed...should we not have both at the same time? John |
OOH they are litle mokeys aren't they? lol. I personally haven't done the whole crate training thing. Have you thought about an x- pen? alot of people use them on here. Put his bed in there, a wee pad and water,food,toys etc. Put him in there when you eat or when you aren't able to watch him. :) |
can't you take his leg and easily push it into the crate? thats what I would do and lock it. How BIG is this dog? when kizzy first started wanting to be at the table when we ate I always just told her to go lay down. now she is almost 7 months old and she usually will go over on the rug in front of my fridge and lay down. Maggie is almost 3 months and she isnt allowed to lay under our table or around out feet when we eat either. I know if you let them do this from the start, soon they will be begging and raising up on our legs and whining. I didnt want them to do things I dont want them to do when we have company over. So Maggies already pretty good about just going on over and laying down some place. I really couldnt tell you why they do it but maybe its because we didnt let them hang around the table from the very beginning. Good luck to you but you will find out sometimes you have to scold them or just make them mind. I do remember several times I would just pick up a toy and have kizzy go get it and she would start playing with the toy and kinda forget about coming to the table. |
btw: he looks very pretty in your avatar. have you sent any pictures of him yet? If I missed them i'm sorry. If you havent sent any, I would love to see them. We love to see the pictures here of every ones beautiful babies. :-) |
It seems that alot of puppies like the kongs, have you tried those? Maybe if you gave him a kong with a little bit of PB in it, it would keep him busy in his crate while you eat. Does he spend alot of time in his crate during the day? If so, maybe that's the reason he doesn't want to go in. Good luck to you!! |
My pup starting begging at the table too. I got up and with my feet moved him into the front room. Once there, I told him to stay - and I went back to the table. Every time, he returned to the table, I got up and with my feet moved him back to the front room and told him to stay again. Soon - everytime he even started to come toward the table, I reminded him to stay and I got up and moved him back again if I needed to. I only did this for only one or two meals - and he's through begging at the table. Good luck! Carol Jean |
Hi John, what works for me is a squirt bottle with water in it, when Lillie is mis-behaving I squirt her and say "No" in a stern voice and this has really worked, she hates water so this training works for her. Since you can't seem to get him in the crate, I suggest a ex-pen, it's like a crate but more open and not so inclosed, my baby sleeps in her's, it's big enough for her bed, food, water, and a wee-wee pad. I didn't want to just force him in the crate because I though he would equate that with punishement. The squirt bottle doesn't work...he actually loves being squirted and think we are playing him. I would do the xpen but we don't have the room in the house to set one up properly. I'll see...we may just need to lock him in a room during dinner. sigh. John |
