Two of my furballs were born in Alabama and spent their first winter in Iowa last year.....they loved the snow. Sophie still is a little southern belle though and doesn't like to stay out side very long. Isis (the puppy) is only 4 months old, this will be her first winter, we'll see. I don't really let them stay out too long....it gets below zero here too. |
lived in montreal as well for about 1 year 1/2 went to cdi college, then moved back to brooklyn since no jobs since i only speak english, but ya get sweater maybe even 2 of the to put on , its freezing there i know how it is, i use to wait for the bus to come where the snow is almost up to my knees lol mad cold there |
Well this is going to be Peeka's first winter i live in Utah so it gets pretty cold and a lot of snow i just bought him his first sweatshirt and coat my hubby had a cow but they were so cute i had to. Peeka is so funny when i put the clothes on him he seriously is freaked out he just stands there he won't move at all just stands still with his head down lol i hope he gets better about it and then i wanna buy some shoes but he is so tiny i don't know if they will fit yet he will be 16 weeks tommarrow and he is 2lbs 12 ozs so i'm not sure yet. |
Last winter was above normal conditions here and very little snow, but normally we have frigid cold and how I dread that. Maddie will not go on a pee pad and even when she was a little puppy she would not, so I made her a litter box in the garage, but she wouldn't go anywhere but outside. I don't know how she stood that, but she doesn't seem to get cold like other yorkies do. I bought her warm boots for last winter and didn't need them, but will probably have to use them this winter. She also wears sweaters when going outside in the cold. |
Snow babies! Indiana winters!! Could be 65 degrees and sunny, or 10 below with 2 feet of snow! Last year I made trails through the snow so Otis and Oliver could chase each other. It was pretty cool cause they learned they could take different trails and catch each other at the next pass. Also, the snow was so deep that they couldn't see each other over the top of the trails. They would start jumping up and looking for each other. Sometimes they'd get brave and forge out to make their own trail. It was hysterical!! My yorkie is "cotton" coated so I think he stays a little warmer, the other is a shih-poo. I keep the play sessions short so they don't get too cold. I always watch them because they crack me up. Sometimes I even join in. If the snow is wet, he spends an hour after coming back in the house pulling and licking the snowballs off his feet. My guys LOVE the snow. |
Can anyone recommend some good booties that will stay on? Thanks for the great tips. |

* Booties for the snow shouldn't be fitted, i.e., they shouldn't look like people shoes. Fitted shoes have a tendency to spin on the ankle in the snow. * Simple is best. A rectangular nylon sack with a velcro tie is all you need. It looks like a mini sleeping bag. If you can find some with a fleece lining, so much the better but it's not essential. The main thing you want to do is keep the cold snow off the pad and make them as comfortable as possible. * They only need to be about 2" long for a Yorkie. Make sure they don't extend over the ankle joint. The best advice is to try not to spend too much money on them. They fall off and get lost. They wear out fairly fast. Mitzis Mom may have the best idea yet. She makes her own in about 10 minutes. Check out Post #42 on this thread: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...t=44329&page=3 |
1 Attachment(s) here is a pic of the paw protectors that I made for mine. I made these from an old pair of jeans and some scrap material. this is the link for the pattern. I'd be careful choosing the right fabric. (if you will be using them on hot pavement you don't want the fabric to be the kind that will melt on to their feet.) (if you are using for snow you will want it to be waterproof and maybe lined in something to keep them warm) this is the link for the pattern. http://www.uberpest.com/booties.html here is a crochet pattern for those who want to crochet them. http://www.ljccrochetdesigns.com/DogBooties.html oh and let me add also that I used the iron on velcro too. and you could probably even make these using the iron on fusing instead of sewing. makes it easy for those who don't have a sewing machine. |

alaskayorkie, Where have you found your coats and sweaters, etc for yorkies? You have some super cute outfits for them. I'm moving to Ohio next month and I'm going to need it for that cold Canton weather. |
