Will My Baby Fall Out Of The Bed? I want Bleu to sleep in the bed with me but I'm afraid he'll fall off of it through the night. My Bed is rather high and he like to lay on very edge of the sides:eek: . Even when I get him to lay in the middle I'm afraid that during the night he'll wonder to the edge and fall off. Has your baby ever fallen off the bed? What can I do to keep him on there safe? |
Sadie did not sleep with us until she was a year old. We have a new puppy(will be 10 weeks tomorrow) I am going to try to keep her in her crate at night. I too have a high bed, Sadie fell off once...THANK GOD! she didn't get hurt. If your little one is a puppy,IMO, I wouldn't let him/her sleep with me as of yet..Not only could he fall off and get hurt, you could roll over on him during the night and suffocate him...I know someone that his happened to... JMO |
Piper fell off the bed when we first got her. What a scare. We ran her to the vet right away. Xrays showed nothing. She limped for a few days. Just bruised her hind leg. We waited a few days before putting her back in bed. I slept with her on the blow up bed on the floor. It hasen't happened again. She is now very cautious when on the bed. Our 2 sleep between us. A little advice if you sleep with your baby. If you get up to go to the bathroom, don't leave them on the bed alone. They will follow until they get older & know to wait. |
Cali started sleeping with me around 5 months. She has never once fallen off..although jumping is a whole other issue! |
If you insist upon him sleeping with you, at least stack pillows in a U-shape to keep him in that area. |
my puppy fell out of the bed at nine weeks old and the thump was so loud it woke me up. Luckily, she wasn't injured. She has never been in the bed to sleep since. |
My girl Rylie has been sleeping in my bed since the first day i got her. just over 6 months now. She gets into a huge fit if she doesn't sleep with me now. (Which i love and hate. Love because its so cute having her next to me and hate because it's my fault that she has to sleep with me and now she's into that habit, and am not sure what she will be like if i ever have to go away for a night) Anyway she has fallen off the bed twice, i think once was my fault i may have pushed her off not realizing. She was completely asleep and did not realize she fell and has half asleep on the floor (she wasn't hurt) the second time she fell i'm not sure how, but she fell and that night i had a huge pile of clothes on the floor :rolleyes: and she fell on those. I've noticed now that she's sleeping in my bed that i'm a very light sleeper i wake up in the middle of the night to just feel around for where she is to make sure she's ok. Or i wake up to her sitting up at the edge of the bed pacing cuz she has to go to the bathroom but is scared to jump off the bed. (Unless she has to go SOOOOO bad then she will jump if i'm not up fast enough.):) |
Howie is 6 months and he can jump ON and OFF the bed as he pleases. I met a woman once who had her dog sleep in his harness and attached the leash to the headboard. Not sure how safe that is though... |
When ours were puppies we scooted our pillows down away from the headboard a little and put them between the headboard and pillow. Make sure the matress is up tight to the headboard so they don't fall thru. They both loved sleeping there and felt close and safe. I also got a small kitty bed and put the first one in it above our head but sometimes she would climb out. I usually woke up if I felt them moving around. She is 3 years old now and has never fallen out of the bed that I know of. I keep a thick afghan on the floor of my side of the bed just in case tho. She likes the cushion when she jumps off the bed. |
Sleeping on the bed I bought a small soft carrier for Teddy when he first came home at 12 weeks. At first I kept it zipped at night on the bed. He figured out right away that this was HIS place to be. Soon after, was able to keep it unzipped and he never fell off the bed. Now, at age six, he sleeps fine on the bed without the carrier. |
If you want to be on the safe side, take the rails out from under the mattresses and that will make the bed much lower. When your puppy gets big enough to use stairs to get on the bed, you can put the rails back on. |
If your worried about him falling, and/or if it's a high enough fall I wouldn't have him sleep on the bed. It's better to be safe then sorry. |
Try taking a little nap on the bed with him one day and see how it goes... |
We let both of ours sleep in bed with us, in the begining. When we got Melvin he was so tiny, he could easily fit in the palm of my hand. So when it came time for bed we put him in bed with us, and he did fine. However, there was one instance where I heard (I think I dreamt it) him scream, I woke up just in time to see Shane rolling over on him and snatched him before anything happened. Needless to say from then on, he slept on my side away from Shane. He slept with us untill he ruined my down comforter. :mad: Then with Marilynn she slept with us for a long time now, not so much. She loved to crawl under the covers and sleep by our feet, in between your legs. Or on the pillow like us. I would def. put pillows on the borders and between you and the baby. I'm a pretty light sleeper and am generaly aware of where she is at all times, I suppose I'm lucky in that sense. |
We always waited until they were at least a few months old and had their potty training under control. I probably concentrated more on wondering if I would find a present for me in the morning then anything else.....lol. I can definitely understand your worrying about him falling off though, as they are pretty small and fragile. The pillow ideas sound good to me. Perhaps you could cuddle in bed with him a bit as things are winding down for the evening then crate him next to your bed so he knows you are still close until he is a little bigger.
