flea market pets OK, I have another question to ask all and any breeders out there. Sat i am going to a swap meet for animals, dogs ,cats ,birds, lizards,ect.. there will be a flea market also on pet products and such. I am very interested in see this. I am going to buy a Bird mostly, however if i see puppies i will probably buy one. my heart says these animals are from a mill like environment. Can you ?Will you ???? please give me some tips on what to look for in a puppy that might be sick i do not want to bring anything home to my other babies. I am about 2 hrs away from this swap meet here is the web site it does not say much if anyone wants to check it out http://www.nccvb.org/Attract/WSM.htm |
yes i think most of the animals will be from a mill like environment. only because it reminds me of the Hbo special Dealing Dogs. did you see that.where the breeder was at a flea market buying dogs and they said most of them were most likely stolen. |
I personally wouldn't advise buying a puppy from a flea market, these dogs will more than likely be poorly or stolen. Its always best to buy from a reptuable breeder, have a nice time though :) |
I never bring an animal home until I've had them examined by my vet. Sorry I can't be more helpful than that but I would be suspicious of the health of these animals. |

I would discourage buying a dog from a flea market. I would be too afraid that I would bring some nasty home like PARVO or KENNEL COUGH, or some such dreadful disease. If you even walk though the dog areas it would be prudent to wipe the bottoms of your shoes down with Bleach BEFORE getting into your car to come home. Better yet, put the shoes in a plastic bag, seal the bag up and toss them in trunk until you can thoroughly clean them. Can't be too safe... |
thank you. i hope my heart does not overcome me. |
A Friend of mine told me she got her dog from the flea market and I thought she was joking. It was a malti-poo that was a puppy and only like 100 bucks, but now the dog is about 3 and has a hunchback. My guess is the bad genes. But her dogs have the worst behaviors. They are non stop barking and very hyper and fidgity. I swear her dogs are on puppy speed! lol |
People who breed good healthy dogs do not have to sell them at flea markets. There is where you will find the worst of the worst. Brokers buy them from breeders who can't get rid of them and then resell them at flea markets. |
Good luck with your bird at the flea market. We got our first Cockatiel, Cosmo, at one. He turned out incredible! He says about 60 different things, and talks to his hand. Hilarious to watch - sitting on something, one claw up in the air, opening and closing it, and talking to it like it was a puppet. Sometimes if he is tired, he just puts his head down on the perch between his feet and talks to both of them.:D We looked at the puppies, but I think I would think twice about getting one there unless it was a Heinz 57. They always seem to be healthier since all the breed characteristics are gone. It is just so hard to look at their tiny little faces and walk away. |

You won't know where these babies came from, won't know if they were gotten honestly or stolen. You can find a macaw from reputable places and a dog from reputable breeders. This isn't going to be the place for either one. Save yourself a lot of heartache and tears and either stay home or go to a movie or go do some shopping. |

Great post with great advice!!!  |
From what I've heard and read - you're taking a huge chance of bringing home a sick puppy. We can't save them all but this needs to be stopped. These smugglers are bringing them across the border now and selling them like Drugs. Many puppies are going to be sold - then die. It's heartbreaking. IF You have HBO - watch the show DEALING DOGS - it'll make you cry and why all this isn't stopped is a mystery. How hard can it be to catch these people smuggling these poor puppies across the borders ? Even if they aren't smuggled dogs - anyone that would sell at a flea market doesn't give a hoot what happens to these poor puppies. You can bet the puppies have never seen a vet. |

I personally have Parrots, including a Macaw and just wondered if you have any experiance with the Macaws????:) |
Yes alittle ,But my daughter is very good with all birds. i also have a friend that knows and that is where she gets her birds at these meets. she will not breed them though for all the reason you all have said. my friend is going to advice me and help. thanks |
WEll I have to say there is no thing such as a LITTLE experiance if you want to have a Macaw. They are not like other smaller birds at ALL. They are tempermental and can flip on you if they get angry. They look beautiful and tame with experianced handlers but you MUST be prepared to spend HOURS each day working with them. If they do not get lots of attention they become snappy and one snap can remove a finger. Be prepared to spend HOURS a day of devoted attention if you want a nice bird. I also want to say that you can not actually TELL a sick bird from a well bird usually until the bird is VERY sick. They tend to hide sickness very well until it is usually TOO LATE. This is a good reason to buy from a recommended breeder with a good reputation and who is willing to give a guarantee. |
I got a cockatiel at the flea market and it was great. As for dogs, my dtr got her yorkie at a flea market. The breeder shows there and takes deposits and you visit with the pups before you take it home (for several weeks). Health guarantee and testing are included. Great yorkie though i got kennel cough possibly from my yorkie. I saw some dogs at the last flea market I went to and the dogs were not looking good. |

I am truly sorry for offending you because I am going to a animal swap meet. Thank you for you advice though. |
If you don't want to bring anything sick home, DON'T BRING ONE HOME FROM A FLEA MARKET. NO RESPONCIBLE BREEDER WOULD SELL THEIR BABIES THERE!!! |
The ones who sell puppies at flea markets aren't reputable breeders. They're only trying to make money. I would never buy one from a flea market, JMO. |
just to update everyone here i did not buy a puppy' but i did by a brid..blue head conure named Tinker Toy |
I hope you & Tinker Toy are very happy together. Best wishes:) |

No one here is trying to attack you. You have to understand though that some people would question your standing with pets if you would take such risks and support such actions. |
Good luck with your new bird - I really do mean that. I read your OT post about the Flea Market and you said you didn't see anything 'that bad' there. I replied to you already but wanted to say HERE on this site - we try not to encourage anyone to buy at a Flea Market. I feel very sorry for all the dogs now being sold like drugs all over the place - Flea Markets - the side of the road etc - but you have to realize....most are are NOT vet checked & too many are ill - (most of the time it presents after you bring the puppy home) and people are just asking for a heartbreak if they buy one from those types of places. Parvo is the biggest concern - followed by everything else you can think of. Just last year a friends daughter lost her puppy to parvo. Yes - she bought it at a FLEA MARKET |
Ernie and I used to go to a big flea market here in Ohio....Mostly I went because I like shopping in the dog store! They only sell Doggie products, no animals! And we used to sneak Autumn and Gizmo in because the owner of the store wanted to see them lol But we quit going with our furbabies. People were crazy! We had a couple follow us around asking us to sell them Autumn and we kept saying No she isn't for sale but they were relentless! We left in a hurry and haven't gone back. I hope you have a very healthy bird and he/she lives a long life! |
Gee Wessssssss |
there is a flea market here in Houston, TX that sells puppies. My sister bought a chihuahua after I told her not to and she died 3 days later and they would not refund the money because "they have no proof" of the transaction because it was paid with cash. flea markets always use the word "teacup" when there is no such thing and they only have pictures of the parents, who I think aren't the parents at all. Don't quote me but mostly all pets that are sold at flea markets came from a puppy mill, in my opinions |
