Constant licking!! : Hi all, Cole is about a year and a half now and he just constantly tries to lick my skin. I thought it might be my moisturizer but even when I have any on he just licks and licks and I try to divert his attention and he just comes back and starts licking me again. He does it to my bf as well. Its begining to drive us nuts. Anyone's yorkie do the same? Any idea why they do it? Thanks! |
Oh my 2 do this, too!!!!!!!! He is just giving you kisses!!!! :p I agree, though..sometimes it can get rather annoying. But I think it's perfectly normal. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. |
Both our girls do this at night. I call it my second bath before bed. |
I was just so curious because i have had other breeds of dogs before and they have never done this. Maybe he just loves me that much! :D |
I've seen dogs do that before, but I couldn't tell you why. Here is something I found: http://www.lucythewonderdog.com/licking.html |
I hate when they lick my hands and face! One or two licks is ok and I don't mind constant licking on my arms, legs, etc...BUT on my face and hands :thumbdown NO WAY :thumbdown , b/c they start to get REALLY DRY  |
Thanks everyone! I just wanted to make sure this was normal. :D |
I got this while googling for "why do dogs lick your face". Hope this helps::) From the time dogs are puppies they seem to want nothing more than to lick your face. Why do dogs lick your face? Why do they seem to desire this apparent disgusting display of affection? The answer is quite simple, dogs lick your face because this is their natural way of showing that you are their parent/care giver. You see in the wild dogs lick each others faces not only while they are pups but also into adulthood. This action has many different purposes. As puppies the young dogs lick their parents faces to stimulate regurgitation. Young dogs cannot digest meat in its crude form so the parents and uncles and aunts of the pack swallow the meat which then begins to digest in their stomachs. When the adult dogs reach the den the younger dogs begin to lick their mouths which stimulates the regurgitation of the partially digested meat. The puppies then eat this meat. Dogs also lick faces as a sign of respect. In the wild the dog pack has a definite hierarchy which must be followed at all times and one of the ways in which the dogs show respect to the dominant male and female is by face licking. Woe be to the dog who doesn't lick the face of the Alpha male. While a dog licking your face may seem like an unsanitary or perverted habit it really is neither. You have understand that dog saliva is full of a antibiotics which help them to stay clean and also protect them from the bacteria etc… which is found on meats. Nor is the desire of a dog to lick your face something with a sexual overture. It is as much a sexual action as when a baby wants to nurse on its mothers milk. Some people find nothing wrong with their dogs desire to lick their face while others find it terribly disgusting. In the end it probably boils down to your personal preference. Dogs should definitely be discouraged from lick human baby or toddlers faces. As in general it can expose the young human to germs which it doesn't naturally encounter. Or for which it might not have sufficient defenses to protect itself. Can you allow your dog to lick your face? Only you can answer this question since it is your dog, but if you have health concerns then you probably want to teach your dog from the beginning that this is unacceptable behavior. |
Sadie licks my face all the time! Lillie (new puppy) is doing the same thing! Maybe a trait? I don't know |
Diesel has a leg and foot fetish!!!! He only seems to be that way with my DD and my DH yet he is "my" dog. He is on my tail ALL the time yet he licks them the most. Sometimes I think it is the salt on the skin that he is licking. COunt mine in! He licks all the time! Michelle |
My bunny dose this!! scent she was a little puppy!! She loves licking!! She even ran right up to my mother in law and licked her on the mouth really fast over and over when she was tiring to talk!! I thought it was soo funny!! Every time she opened her mouth to say something, bunny would run up her or after her, to try to do it again!! Which I didnt really try hard to stop her  My mother in law NEVER I MEAN NEVER shuts up!! I know I know I am mean, but hey it got me a few sec with out hearing her voice, which drove me NUTS!!:rollingey My Bella... she is not much of a licker... When I ask for kisses she will give me a few and stop or when I am whistling but other then that, she dose not lick us. |
Cole, Although alot of our dogs are "lickers", yours sounds like he may be a bit obsessive about it. If it really is driving you nuts, here's a couple of thoughts. First, and foremost, make sure that you aren't inadvertently reinforcing the behavior. We all think it is cute and sweet when they want to give us kisses. But, if you are wanting to curb the behavior, you can't occasionally think it's sweet. You can't make cooing, "aw, sweet puppy" sounds when he does it. Instead, ignore him and get up and walk away. Don't give him attention for an undesirable behavior. My second thought is an extension of the first. Reward the behavior that you do want. For those brief times when he's not licking anyone, praise and reward that. Oh, what a good dog. Here's your treat. If you and your boyfriend are consistent, I think you'll see a reduction in this behavior. |
Wasn't there a Dog Whisperer episode on this? I think he said the CONSTANT licking is a sign of boredom. If they give a kiss here and there, that's normal. And if they just sit there and lick your arm over and over and over again (without emotion??), they might be bored. |
