? about water bottle's i have a litter of puppies and have begun to wean them. i was wondering if anyone had any tips on teaching them to drink water from a water bottle, like you would use for a hampster. i know some of the show breeders use them so when they drink they dont get their beards all wet. an advise would be apperciated. thanks |

I'm definitely not breeding or showing dogs but I got tired of LittleBit playing in her water so I just got one of the guinea pig bottles (It has a little bit bigger water tube) and hung it on her crate. I just pushed the balls back up in it a couple of times so she could see that it was wet & she just started drinking it on her own. She was about 13 weeks at the time. |
I'd like to know about this too. I have a plastic hamster water bottle on Ziggy's crate. For his own safety he stays in there when we're gone....we don't quite trust him on his own.:p I'd like to know if it's okay to use the plastic bottles instead of glass. There was something about it being unsafe to reuse plastic water bottles or soft drink bottles. Did anyone else hear about it?:confused: |

Gracie started using a water bottle as soon as I put it up for her, at about 9 weeks. I half wonder if she did not use one at the breeder. I just tapped the tip to show her it was wet and she took it from there. It sure beats toys, kibble and feet in the water bowl! |
I use and recommend water bottles and everyone is right..it is easy to teach pups, a few taps with a finger and voila! |
All of mine have water bottles in their crates and pens. I believe they should have water available 24 hours a day all the time. It is especially useful for the crates, they won't spill their bowls and get a mess everywhere. Some of them learned on their own;with the others I just tapped on the end to show them that water came out and the picked up on it real fast. It is pretty easy for them to learn!! Oh and I don't have the glass water bottles, I have a hard time finding them so I just wash out the water bottles every day and replace them with new ones frequently. |
hmmm i just use a water dish and never had a problem although sometimes someone will get excited and spill it, but, after all its just water!! |
thank you my kids are 5 weeks old and right now they are more interested in chewing on it but every now and then i will see one of them lick the tube so will just keep it in there and i'm sure they will get it. i do use my finger to show them that it is wet . and they are getting liquid from there food and still from mom but we are working on weaning them from her and i have taken a bowl and let them drink from it but didnt want to confuse them on which one they should use. thanks for all of your comments. |

bottles Licky bottles are a pain in the neck for me so I stopped using them unless traveling. It is hard to change the water daily if you have lots of dogs...but to train a pup to lick it is easy..put some honey on the tip or anything tasty...but not to worry dogs are smart, they know where water is and will lick it..pups lick everything. My theory is this for what it is worth...when I used licky bottles my dogs only drank enough water to get by...when they are watered from a dish they drank much more...JMO. A breeder friend has a problem with a few of hers and kidney stones..when she measured how much was drank from a bottle each day compared to a dish was an eye opener..but again..one persons opinion. I use coup cups hung on the pens.. |

I also have water dishes out for them. I only use the bottles in the crates when traveling. I also keep one by the bedside. Misha always seems to want the last drink in bed. |

I bought these little things that let you attach any soda type bottle to a dripper. From 2 liter size to single serve size. I just wash my soda bottles and then use them. We always have new soda bottles around here so it's easy to replace them frequently. I never noticed about the more water verse less water drinking bit but since that was mentioned... I will probaly give the bowls first thing in the morning and then refiill the drippers for during the day |
bottles They work well for many..but not ALL of mine. My Chopper was not a "drinker" and I got worried..I took a red magic marker and marked the bottle, he averaged 4 oz in 12 hrs from a bottle and 8 from his bowl hanging on the pen..( the reason I remember so well, is the doubled amount) of course I kept him confined alone to test it. I tested him a couple times in month to get an idea. Since he did not eat canned food, there was no other source of water in his diet. AND..what I noticed with a litter of pups is..they start to lick and within a couple seconds or so they get distracted by another pup or sound and stop and go play. Lapping water from a bowl is just easier to get more in them..but remember puppies usually have other sources of water..perhaps canned, cottage cheese etc..Chopper was an adult male on a dry kibble and I thought he would turn to dust. LOL |

Aquafina, Dasani.....however if you use a plastic bottle that is from a pet store and is made to be reused then it is usually a different type of plastic. I learned this is my chemistry classes. I use the hamster water bottle for Lillie and she caught on real quickly. Do it by hand 1st, put the baby on your lap and take the water bottle and put it under her mouth and give it a firm squeeze so it will leak a little, it will drip and the pup should lick it, just keep doing this over and over for a bit and she will catch on. I have mine attached to her ex-pen. This helps with her not getting her beard wet and soggy! |
There's nothing to teach LOL My Max new how to get the water out of the water bottle by simply licking the stick. That's the only way I give him water now because if I give him water in a bowl, he tends to drink it too quickly and immediately throws it up. I have water bottles all over the yard now LOL Its great for me and Max knows no other way to drink water. |
