OMG, you would not believe what happened! Last night at about 6:00 PM Dennis was playing with the Sahara when I noticed that he just did not look quite right. I thought maybe Sahara had hurt him, though she is only 1.3 and very gentle. Maybe poked him in the eyes because he had a strange look. Anyway he jumped up in the chair and just looked at us, though very sadly. I also thought maybe Sahara had pooped Dennis out since it has been non-stop since Saturday night when Sahara came home. At about 10:00 PM Dennis gets on all fours and looks shaky, so I put him gently on the floor where he looks quite wobbly and proceeds to vomit. I immediately get up to comfort him but there is something terrible wrong, I don’t think he was able to breath, though I just am still not sure what I am witnessing. I grab him and take him to the bathroom where he has collapsed in my arms and feels like he is dying because his body goes tense and he feels in some respects like a dead body. He is looking at me as if to say do something though there is very little life in his eyes. I start to push on his lower ribcage and I am saying “ Dennis don’t you dare do this to me! What honey, what’s the matter. Oh my God, oh my God! ” (Over and over)… I finally decide to open his mouth and see if there is anything stuck, which there was not. Then I pushed my finger further down his throat 3 times in two minutes when he seemed to shows some signs of needing to vomit again which since he was in my arms, I just leaned him over the sink and he did vomit again. After this I take him back to the living room and lay him down on his blanky and get him to drink some water and take some Nutracal. I sit on the floor with him till about 2:00 AM rubbing and listening to his belly, which is making gurgling sounds, and trying to get him to take a little more water as he feels so dehydrated. I don’t know what I witnessed? Is it possible that Dennis had a seizure? There were parts of his little body that felt like the life left. I am very afraid! To confound things further though I think there can be any relevance, just a strange coincidence. Sahara and Dennis were both eating Pigs ears and Wednesday morning when she woke up from a fitful nights sleep, she immediately vomited a gooey piece of pigs ear. I gave her some water and she ate a little food, though not enough from what I have witnessed since Saturday. So I gave her some nutrical and called the Vet. The Vet felt she was just fine especially since she had water and food and after 20 minutes was able to keep it down which would rule out any the possibility of obstruction. So Sahara has been fine ever since, and now my baby Dennis get violently ill…. I can’t stop staking and feel so very nervous not knowing what is going on. There have been no pigs ears since Tuesday. Both Dennis and Sahara are quite tired today and are napping though both appear to be well. We all did have a very rough night! Dennis is acting differently today, very docile and quiet but with a happy look in his eyes. I think he knows I saved his life last night and realizes how much I love him, in fact I now also realize just how much I love him. Does anyone have any idea or explanations? I am very shook, maybe someone has some ideas. |
How scared you were. I don't have any advice other than to call your Vet and see what they recommend. Just keep an eye on him. I think I would still at least call the vet and possibly take him in just to see if there is something that may have caused it. Good Luck and keep us posted. |
I'm sorry I can't help you. Have you called the vet and described the symptoms to him to see what he thinks. I would have been so totally freaked out. |
I would definately tkae dennis to the vet. Altough he is fine now you have to make sure that he's ok. |
It sounds to me like he had a seizure but I would take him to your vet and get their opinion |
OH I am so sorry you went through this! Please call your vet. Even if the little guy is fine it will give you some peace of mind and help you relax. Our thoughts are with you. Please keep us posted! |
They are both up now and eating lunch. BRB, I have to monitor. |
oh im so happy that he is ok now, but for goodness sake ,please throw away those pig ears... they are not good for them.. please... if you want to get them something i advise you to get bully sticks or flossies, they are 100% digestable and most of us here on yt allow our dogs to eat them... |
I just called the Vet and they said to just keep an eye on him. I asked if it was possible that when he threw up the first time, if maybe, that not all of it came up and that it cut off his air way, and she said yes, it is absolutely possible! That is what I think happened, because he just looked like he could not breathe. He does appear to be fine, though I am definitely quite shook! |

Oh this is so scary. I hope he is doing ok today and will be fine. |
How scary, and extra scary for you not knowing what caused it! Bless his little heart...I pray he's ok from HERE ON OUT! A hug to you! |
Dennis is back playing but I am getting the feeling that he might blame Sahara, as I noticed she attached him right at the same time that he started to feel sick. That is when he abruptly left for the chair. He has been playing, eating and drinking but does not seem to be happy about Sahara jumping all over him the way he has all week. He was gleeful and now he seems resigned and sad that Sahara will take the toy he is playing with away where before it was all great fun. Maybe he still feels a little weak and just does not want to be left out of all the fun. I will just keep watching…. Sahara is a terror, a gentle terror, a very gentle terror…. But maybe it is just to much right now. Thanks everyone for all your support and warm wishes. It sure helps in situations like this. To lose either of them is more than I could bear. I love them both so much. |
omg that had to be soooo scary!!! |
I bet he's still just feeling a little puny! He'll be back to enjoying the fun with sis soon! |
That must have been very scary!! Is is possible that something might have been wrong with the pigs ears since both of them threw up? Please don't chance it and give them these again. Definitely a new snack is in order. |
I would have freaked out not knowing what was happening. The best thing I can say is that it seems like you handled it pretty well. He needed you and you were there. You tried to help and that's what was needed. It might take him some time to get back to his old self, but i would surely keep watching over him. Good luck and hope everything turns out ok. |
So glad he seems okay now...bless his little heart. These babies can sure scare the liver out of us. When Ziggy hit his head I felt like I was going to collapse from being scared and worried. |
[How frightening! I would have panicked! I'm glad he's ok......I think it was the Pig ears...maybe he choked on a piece...or it got temporarily stuck in the airway. HUGS! Francie |
How did you ever hold it together like that? You probably did save his little life. I'm sure he is still shaken over the ordeal, too. I hope he gets back to his old self soon. Bless his heart. Hugs to all. |
Pigs ears and rawhide chews are not good for dogs. My Mom had given her (adult) dog a rawhide chew once and it got stuck in her throat..her tongue was hanging out! My Dad had to stick his finger down her throat and get it out...Thank GOD! he could reach it or their Little Abbey would have died right there! Also check the fat content in these things....WAY to much fat! Do you think maybe it could have been that he got hypoglycemic? I have karo on hand. (I just got a new puppy) Sadie (2 1/2 yrs) and Lillie play and run around alot sometimes (Sadies still getting used to her new fursister) after playing hard I give a very small dab of Karo...just incase...better to be safe than sorry..I hope your little guy is going to be ok |

Anyway, they threw up 2 days apart and I took the pigs ears away 3 days before Dennis got sick. |
It sounds like something I went through about a month ago.Cookie my 2.5 yr old was barely able to stand ,shaking a bit. His eyes looked dazed. He lost his bowel functions and made diarreah all over mydaughter's arms when she picked him up. They put him on the floor to see what he would do and he just fell over. He collapsed in my hands and was barely breathing his eyes were half closed. We did rush him to the ER and found out it was a sezure. The vet assured us that even though his breathing and heartrate may have slowed down that dogs rarely every die from a seizure. It might have been the pig ear also. I stopped giving my yorkie and maltese any pig ears, rawhide or greenies. His treat is cheerios and my maltese gets liver treats. I know exactly what you must of been feeling. I thought my baby was going to die and I kept telling him that he was NOT leaving me yet! How old is your furbaby? Gennel |
I'm very sorry to hear about your baby! I sure hope everything is fine now. Please take a moment to read the dangers of rawhides. http://www.boxerrescue.com/rawhide_warning.htm |

God I am sorry to hear your story and yes we both know how scary it is. I am still having anxiety attacks and have lost 10 pounds from all the worry. I am taking Sahara back to the Vet today because she has a little cough….. Does it ever end! She is eating, drinking, and playing but I am not taking any chances. Sahara is only a puppy, 14 weeks Saturday and though she checked out fine on Tuesday’s, (first visit) she has to go back. Will talk to the Vet again about Dennis even though he is just fine now! |
