Beginner Questions Is there a standard for how tall a Yorkie should be? Are they basically supposed to be square, I mean like as tall as they are long. And last question, how tall are your Yorkies at the shoulder? Well, that's not the last question, after all. Is the height somehow in relation to weight? It seems like Little Bit is getting taller but not gaining much weight. She may be 2 1/2 lbs. at 4 1/2 months. OopS & 1 more, what is meant by the teddy bear or baby doll face? Does that just mean a short nose? I think that is what Little Bit has. Thanks for taking the time to fill me in. |

Any answers? I have looked at both sites & have read the standard again. Could someone please tell me if they should be basically square? I hate to be a pest but I don't really understand the "be in proportion" Does that mean height & length should be the same? I also asked if some of you would mind telling me the height of your Yorkies? If you would do that, I would also like to know their weight, if possible. If you know their length, I would also appreciate that. I'm not asking anyone to go to a lot of trouble, just hoped that some of you might have that information in your heads. No one answered the teddy bear or baby doll face question either. Thanks for your trouble. |
Yes they shoud be square. The distance from the back of their heads to their tail should match the distance from the floor to their topline. Their toplines should be level front to back. But puppies get kind of awkward looking as they grow, so they may look out of proportion from time to time. The teady bear face is the longer nose, the babydoll face is the shorter nose. Mine are sleeping right now so I can't measure them. If yours is 2 1/2 pounds at 4 1/2 months, she should be about 4 1/2 pounds full grown. They fact of the matter is, she is what she is and you love her no matter what, so don't get hung up in the numbers. |
K.C. my boy is 7 1/2" tall (at back, not head) and 8" long collar area to back end. He weighs 3 pounds 14 oz. Yes, the body should be as square as possible, but I believe short and cobby is preferable to tall and long. Baby doll face or teddy bear face means a shorter nose to me. Allie is 8" tall and 8 3/4" long. She weighs 4 pounds, 12 oz. Kelsey Bear is too much of a wiggle worm, but I'll just say she is too short and too long right now, at 7 months. |
One more thing to add, as far as proportion goes - to me it means that you don't want a short legged, short body with a heavy bone frame structure (like a bulldog) or a taller yorkie that's frame is too slight (thin). A taller dog would look better with a med. frame and a shorter dog would look better with a smaller bone structure. Interesting about the teddy bear and doll face meaning different things to different people. To be safe I would just ask short or long nose or their definition of the adjective their using. |

Thank you very much! JeanieK & Lacey's Mom, You were most helpful. That last site you posted, LaceysMom, really was great. That pretty much gave me what I was looking for. As to body shape, I think Little Bit is pretty square 7 1/2 inches tall & long but she looks tall to me. Her features are very delicate and if she weighs 2 1/2 pounds at 4 1/2 months, is her height out of proportion to her weight? I had a Yorkie a long long time ago and he was bigger but also proportionately shorter & longer, I think. Of course, he probably weighed 10 lbs and his ears never stood up so that isn't what I am aiming for. I'm really just curious. Also, I think I read somewhere that they may grow in spurts & not necessarily proportionately as puppies. I mean like maybe they would grow long for a while & then grow tall & such. Is that true? Sorry for the imposition, but I do appreciate your help. :aimeeyork |
Yes, it is true they are all over the place until at least 10 months. To really see what you have you're just going to have to wait until he is between 1 and 1 1/2 years. |
