Who Else has problems getting there babys to take there monthly heart worm chewable? Who else has to trick there babies to take there heat worm pill every month? My vet gives me those chewable ones that are suppose to be "OH some yummy for doggies." yeah my girls HATE THEM! Bunny will push it back in my hand with he noise, if I try to give one to her... Kind of like no mommy you keep it! and bella smells it and walks away... as if she is saying. umm no thank you mommy, I'm good There such brats:rolleyes: SO ever month I make chicken or tuna salad and put a little on a palt and mix up with the chewable. This is the ONLY way I can make sure they eat it all and dont get each others. Any one else have this problem? Or are my girls the only one? |
I just gave Peeka his first one yesterday and he chopmed it down he thought it was a treat lol but i'm sure he will eventually give me probs i would just keep doing what your doing at least they will take them that way |
Rocky hates them!!!! I try to hide in cheese, peanut butter, hamburger, chicken, or anything he will eat. Well he takes the food, but spits out the heartworm pill everytime. So I have to put him on the counter, put the pill in his back of his mouth, and gently hold his mouth closed so he swallow its. |
I just break off a piece of Pupperoni and stick it in the middle and then there is no problem. |
OMG!!! I thought for sure I was the ONLY one with this problem. Mine are on heartgard. Each month I literaly have to break up the cubes into the tinniest pieces. Then TRY and hide them in some sort of human snack food like oatmeal. And, even still this little stinkers will some times spit out the little pieces. |
I use cheese. It takes about 3 tries. I think he spits it out just to get more cheese. Other pills I throw on his kibble or feed him like a treat. These he spits out. They must taste nasty or something? |
I finally gave up with trying to get Joey and Izzie to take theirs. It's kind of tough I would think to try and chew. They are now on Revolution and everything is working out great. |
I give Interceptor, which is a tiny little pill. I use that instead of Heartgard because mine are SO picky that they probably wouldn't eat the Heartgard. I wrap the little tiny Interceptor pill up in a piece of cheese and give it to them. Sometimes Hobbs will eat the cheese around the pill and spit the pill out. If this happens, I have to shove it down his throat! |
That's why I switched to Revolution! It's topical and does heartworm fleas, ticks and ear mites. |
Trixie hates hers. I don't even try to give them to her anymore. I just shove it down her throat, let her put and get it over with. |
No my gang! I use Revolution spot on :D |
I've always asked them if they wanted a treat.:D Then I crumble it up in their plate and down it goes, but I always gave it to them when I knew they were hungry, too. |
My solution is called "I don't want my brother to have anything that I don't have" :D Rowdy is a VERY picky eater and even when we had another older dog - Rowdy would not touch heart guard, even when I broke it into pieces and gave one piece to the older dog and then (tried) one to Rowdy. He just wouldn't buy it. Then we got Rexy - and Rowdy is soooo competitive with Rexy - there is no longer any problem at all. Rexy will eat ANYTHING!!! So, when I give a piece of heartworm med to Rexy - Rowdy is chomping at the bit to get his bite. I'll swear - it's psychological!!!!! At least it works and there is no more heartworm med fights! |
Lily also hates hers. I have been crumbling them in some other yummy food but she generally pecks them out and still don't touch them. It takes me all day of continually mixing it in other food before it all goes down. |
Mitzi looooves her heartguard! I break it in 3 to 4 pieces and have to count my fingers after giving it to her.:aimeeyork |
Phoebi "power spits" the Interceptor right back out! No matter what I hide it in! The pill is the tiniest thing I've ever seen and I even attempt to cut it into pieces and she still knows.......she must know the day of the month or something! I just open her mouth and put it on the back of her tongue and cross my fingers! My maltese, Chan, woofs it right down..... |

Buddy hates the d---n things. I crumble them up really tiny, take a bit of cheese and make a tiny cheese ball. I do this about one hundred times until the whole thing is consumed. It takes most of the afternoon, but when we are finished, he has had his medicine and he thinks he has had the best afternoon ever. L0T'S OF TREATS. YUM!!! We each think the other one is dumber. Me for giving him treats all afternoon, or he for actually eating something he doesn't want to eat. Whatever, it works, and we are both happy. Life is good!! |
Thank goodness my Monte takes his with ease... |
Gracie takes the interceptor flavor tabs and loves when we take out the box! Her tail wags and she jumps up and down! |
I have no problems with my little ones with their Heartgard Plus as long as I slice it into little treat size bites. My problem is my GSD who acts like the biggest baby and refuses to eat the dang thing. I've hidden it in food - smeared it in peanut butter - you name it - I've done it. He constantly spits it out even going so far as to keep it in his mouth and drop it behind the couch. The issue is made worse by Piper who loves to eat anything and she runs behind him trying to get his Heartgard as well as her own! Oh blah - Sunday is dose day! |
Starsky does this too. I found I have to cut it in half and shove it in his mouth and hold his mouth shut. The vet said she usually gives the soft chewy one but was out of those so I got a meat flavored pill. Well the good thing is only 2 more months of this. |
Well I am glad to know my monsters are not the only ones that hate there hart worm meds AND know I have a few more Ideas to give them there hart worm pill, if they ever catch on to the tuna or chicken salad :p |
lexi just gobbles that up..123 its gone, she thinks it a treat |
Gypsy will eat anything. She gobbles up the heartworm med and still wants more of it. |
My yorkies seem to know that the Heartgard is not a treat. They will wait until I call their name and then I break it up into pieces and feed each one. I've tried the Interceptor on my smaller yorkies but they just spit it out regardless of what I hide it in... so they are all back on Heartgard. With treats.. there is no line-up.... they all come charging!!!:Puppy2: |
i just got that heart worm chewable yesterday and we gave it to her with no problem, you prob might have tried or been told breaking it up in the food? |
Oh yesss...there is no way to get a pill down Maddie's throat. Not even my vet or another vet at that clinic could do it! What I do now when she needs medicine or her heartworm pill is I push it into one of those baby food chicken fingers and she eats it right up. I always watch her eat it to know the pill went down with it. A few times the pill ends up on the floor and I have to try again! She can be a stubborn little thing! |
hi all, do you get these from the pet store or from the vet? When should you start giving them to your yorkie? Peanut is almost done with all his shots, but the vet hasn't mentioned any of this. Thanks! |
My baby takes revalution, it takes care of all of it. |
