Hawk omg, I got scared. I have two big trees in my front yard. This evening just a little while ago, I had the puppies out to potty. Maggie was teeing and Kizzy and I were playing waiting for her. all of a sudden I heard this loud screeching sound just up over me. I heard leaves rustling, suddenly it hit me. omg its a hawk up there. I grabbed them both and flew in the house. I never did see it but I know it was one. I called my brother in law to see what they sound like and he said thats about the way one sounds when I tried to tell him how it sounded. About a week ago, I was sitting on the deck, hubby was at the lake feeding the fish and suddenly I heard something and my garage is right at the end of our deck and the pond is just down a ways from their. I looked up and this huge hawk was so low I just knew it was gonna hit its wing on the top of the garage when he flapped it down. But it didnt and it flew right on down to the trees by the pond. From my deck I can see the fish jump in the water when hubby feeds them. I dont actually see the fish unless they jump way up but ya know the big splashes they make. I can hear and see the white water splashing up. I know that hawks wing span had to be at least 3 feet wide from tip to tip. So everybody please watch it when your outside especially if you live out and know you have hawks in your area. I know for a fact we do. I'm glad for sure I dont let Maggie out alone. She would of probably been attack today, even kizzy possibly, even tho she is 8 lbs. I dont think one would pick her up now but those talons could possibly kill her if one just tried to. |
that is such a scary thought:eek: I'm glad you ran inside to keep your babies safe. |
I know how scary that can be!! When we first got Gabby, hubby had her out back to potty and she was a few feet away from her. He happened to look up and see one flying in his direction, getting lower to the ground. He scooped up Gabby and brought her in. From that point on, she was watched like a "hawk" by us! Glad you shared your story - it is a hazard and a danger to our babies that needs to be repeated - they could be gone in the blink of an eye! |
That is sooo scary. I worry about hawks and eagles and people make fun of me. I'm like hey coco is small she's only 4 lbs, it would be easy to scoop her up. But fortunately there are none where I live so I really worry for nothing  |
I have FOUR hawks living in the woods behind my house--all of them are either on the endangered list or in danger of becoming endangered, so to have them living here is actually a good thing. We have a park ranger who drives through the neighborhood from time to time to check on the wildlife, and once I mentioned the hawks and my Yorkie. He suggested that I always keep him leashed, even in my own back yard--don't let him wander too far from me or the hawks will think they have an opportunity. One day we were in the pool and Google was in his play yard right next to the pool, and the biggest hawk was circling and screeching so I scooped him up and ran into the house. The park ranger said the hawk was probably more interested, at that moment, as what looked like a big supply of fresh water and was screeching because with me in there he couldn't get at it; but it was very good I brought Google in anyway. The big one has a wingspan of nearly FIVE FEET and if it wanted to, could actually seriously injure a full-grown person! The park ranger said when that one is circling close to my pool it's best to simply pick up and go inside. It's nearly as big as an eagle! We also get an occasional turkey vulture while they are in transit from one area to another (they don't nest here) and the last time I saw them (ther were two) they were waiting for a hawk to finish dining on a wild rabbit (the rabbit was almost as big as Google). I took a photo of them, because they were nearly as tall as the fire hydrant they were standing by. |
OMG i would freak glad everone is ok! |

Yikes! That's scary!!! Glad you were able to get your babies in the house quick. |
OMg i'm glad everyone is fine! :) |
A real hawk I'm sure would pick up an 8 pound dog and would probably kill it instantly if it couldn't. Be careful. |
Either last year or the year before I remember hearing about 2 instances when hawks killed yorkies--one yorkie was attacked in the owner's backyard and the other was grabbed from the owner's front porch (the owner was sitting on the porch!), and dropped from a few feet in the air. Both yorkies died :(. We have to be very careful if we live in areas where hawks fly. I didn't even know that hawks lived in my area until I heard about these poor yorkies :( |
I've heard that hawks can't pick up more than their body weight is. True or not I dont know but we have a couple around here that would for sure weigh more than any 2 lbs. I dont even know if Maggie has hit 2 lbs or not yet. She was 1.6 oz a week ago. she had only gained 2 oz in 10 days at the time. But even if they arent big enough to take kizzy the talons would kill her if they tried to pick her up. |
I have hawks that fly over my house all the time. We live in So. Ca by two large parks. I had 4 flying over my house this morning. They could easily pick up Lucy. Lucy can only go outside with a leash, unless at least 2 people and my big dog (70 pound Lab) go with her. She is never outside alone, and never off the leash outside at night. We also have large owls and coyotes roaming around starting at twilight. Each time Lucy would play with her maltese friend we had hawks in about 20 min. I think the white attracts them more. My neighbor's mom's maltesse was picked up by an owl while she was only 6 feet from her dog. |
