How to get him to sleep all night. Just wondering if anyone has any tips to make my 3 month old sleep all night or atleast most of it. I've had him for 2 weeks now and for the first week and a half his been good but lately he's been waking up in the middle of the night to bark..either to get up on the bed (which I don't want to get him a habit of) to wanting to play. How can I tire my puppy out more often. Once I am back from work I usually play with him a few hours. Thanks John |
Wanting a three month old puppy to "tire out" and sleep the entire night is like asking an infant to sleep the entire night. Could he possibly be waking you up because he needs to use the bathroom? |
I would try and tucker him out and go potty right before you put him down, also they sleep better when they have a definite spot that they are to sleep in, a crate, a bed, a certain room, ect... |
Ours sleep all through the night, of course I don't go to bed till midnight or 1 and get up at 8-9am. All the puppies were sleeping through the night after 7wks!!! Maybe I'm just a lucky momma. |
Does he sleep in a crate? If so then you could put a towel over the crate to make it darker and maybe he would sleep longer. If not I would take him on a walk right before bedtime. |
He sleeps in and out of the crate. We haven't locked him up yet but we keep the crate open throughout the day and he's in and out of it. He's usually potties before sleep and usually waits until later in the morning to potty again. Am I doing something wrong? |
We have never had a problem with our kids sleeping. At first Melvin was in bed with us, as Marilynn was too. However, Melvin ruined a king-size down comforter and that was it for his bed days. Marilynn sleeps in bed with us occasionally, but I know its not recomended. She only does it when she's clean, or if I am sick, then REALLY she wants to lay with me. The only thing I can say is put him in his kennel and keep him there consistantly, with the door closed. Melvin had a hard time adjusting so we put the kennel in our room by the bed so he could be close, after time we moved it to another room and he was fine. Also we put some toys in with him to occupy his time awake, that seemed to help too. The only time Melvin & Marilynn ever cry is when they need something. Hope this helps. |
Peeka has slept through the night since he was 8 weeks i let him play really hard before bed having him run around a lot then i take him out and wait for him to pee and poop then i put him to bed around 10 pm he will sleep untill 7 am with no accidents and he is now 14 weeks so i think wareing him out is the key! |
Cali would sleep in her playpen until 2 or 2:30 in the morning and I would feed her since she was hypoglycemic 3 times, and put her in her little carry crate and put it on the bed next to me and she would sleep until 5:30. At 5 1/2 months she slept with me and sleeps through the night. |
I am having this same problem with Lillie right now. I got her Saturday...she is 8 weeks old. She sleeps in a cat bed...the ones that have a roof and sides..it's soft so i just put that in her crate...I made her a little blankey, I have a realy small soft pillow that I put in there with her also...She gets me up at 1:00am, 3:00am, and at 5:00am..Usually I stay up by this time...I don't want to just let her whine and cry (hubby has to get up for work...I'm unemployed right now...THANK GOD! don't know if I could function with the lack of sleep LOL). Every time she gets up she pees and sometimes poops...so if I leave her to cry she will go in her crate... Sadie is 2/12 yrs old...I NEVER had a problem with her sleeping from day one! Incredible I know but she even had a bed time...9:00pm...I would tuck her in her crate and off to sleep she went...My Mom thinks because Sadie sleeps with us that the Lillie can sense she is there and this is why she won't sleep through the night.. LOL!! Sounds like I am talking about a skin baby!! If you figure something out PLEASE!!! tell me...the bags under my eyes are down to my chin right now ll |
If I remember correctly, I think both of mine were sleeping all night by then, but would get up very early to potty. The answer to getting him to sleep all night is: EXERCISE! That's the only way! Ya have to wear them out. A tired puppy will sleep. He's probably sleeping a lot during the day and isn't getting as much exercise as you think. Take a nice looooooooong walk if you can.:D |
I think you just have to set a schedule for them. Zoe used to wake up at 5:00am every morning but after a few days of sleeping at 11:00pm, he sleeps through the night and wakes up at 7:00am when we start to get up for work. Now thats his permanent schedule. With trooper here temporarily since he just undergone surgery he sleeps most of the night. I get up to use the bathroom and they wake up but would go back to sleep when I ignore them. |
Mine have all been fine sleeping at night. It usually only takes them a day or two. I keep mine in their crates at night, my bed is too high and I don't want to risk them getting hurt. I put music on and basically let them know that whining or barking will be ignored and the funny thing is that I have recognized their I want out to play whine/bark from their I got to go potty whine/bark. I think the music really helps them, they all quiet down right away when I put the music on. But I have noticed it has to be slow or calming music, they won't rest with the fast beat rock music. I also teach mine to love their crates. Each night I put some treats in their crates, special treats that they really love and only get at night time when they go into their crates. Now that can't see to get in their crates fast enough. They all just zoom right in their crates because they know they will always get a special treat. In fact Scampers won't even give me a good night kiss, he is just so anxious to get into his crate.:rolleyes: |
I would cover his crate or put him in a room separate that you can close the door of. |
