New To Site... Hi Everyone, My name is Lizzie and I live in New York City and am in the early stages of looking to adopt a Yorkie. I have had Yorkie's in the past. I currently have two Maltese, Emma and Meckie... It has been over ten years since I last searched for a pup. I don't remember it being this hard to find a reputable breeder in the tri-state area. I've searched the internet and made a couple of calls but it's hard to separate those who are legitimate from those who aren't. I'm staying clear of people offering multiple toy breeds and those who are set up to accept credit cards. I'm also a little shocked at the prices. I've been quoted anywhere from $3500.00 to $6500.00. I don't want to make a mistake, so want to do as much research as I can. FYI, I got very badly burned when I got Emma. My sweet Yorkie, Charlie, died on a Christmas Eve 1996. I was distraught and desperate for another dog. I decided I wanted a Maltese. I was going around circles with breeders and one weekend decided that I live in NYC, you can get anything in NYC, I should be able to find a puppy by the end of the weekend. I answered a breeder's ad in Brooklyn. He told me he had an 8 week old male, when I got there, the dog was no longer available. He called another breeder who was a friend of his and drove me over there. To make a long story short, it was a puppy broker on Stilwell Ave in Brooklyn. He sold me Emma as a "teacup" Maltese telling me she was 16 weeks old. When I took her to the vet he told me she was only about 8 weeks old (hence the low weight). Emma now weighs 10lbs. I certainly don't love her any the less but I resented being lied to and paying a premium for something I didn't get. Thank God she's healthy. Six months later Meckie came along. I got a call from a breeder in Toronto saying that she knew a couple, both terminally ill, who were looking for a home for their 2-year old 2.5 lb Maltese. I, of course, said yes and flew up to get her. Now, ten years later, I've moved to a much larger apartment, work from home and would like to have a Yorkie in my life again. My search begins. I look forward to your advice. |

A broker on Stillwell Avenue in Brooklyn ... was this place called Quality Canine by any chance? Was the guys name Ivan? |
Welcome to YT and I hope you find yourself a yorkie soon! |
I think it was Quality Canine. I don't remember his name. I know it was steps away from the "B" train. A storefront. I walked in there. He put Emma in my arms, went to take a phone call, and I fell in love. |

Why are you against those that accept credit cards? We have our own business, so I feel fortunate that I can accept credit cards. I thought people would feel safer because you do have some recourse through your credit card company. |
My concern, and correct me if I'm wrong, would be that a breeder set up to accept credit cards (with the exception of PayPal) would be doing business on too large a scale. Again, please correct me if I am wrong. That's why I'm here seeking advice. |
yes that ivan allright... |
I guess Ivan is infamous. I'm just grateful that Emma's healthy. |
i actually went to him and almost got a puppy from him, but i saw lexi before i went back to him... |

Welome and Good luck finding your new baby:animal-pa |
Welcome to YT. It sounds like you are doing your homework. When we started looking for a Yorkie after having lost out last one in January, we were astonished at the prices. However $3500 seems rather high for a pet quality yorkie. There are some parti yorkies selling for that but I've only seen Jeff Dane get those kind of prices for a traditional yorkie. I'm sure someone here can steer you onto a nice yourkie for about 1/3 of that price. |
Welcome and good luck in your search for a yorkie! I'm sure you will be able to find one much cheaper than the prices you quoted. I did!:) |
Welcome t YT. Good luck in finding a reputable breeder and a yorkie that will win your heart forever!:p |
