I am not sure if he is just being a puppy or a bully Hi, new here, I have lurked awhile and decided to jump in. I am owned by a 13 year old, a 6 year old and a 10 week old males Yorkies. The 6 year old, Scooter is a "15 lb teapot" and is very sweet but uncomfortable around the new puppy, Scooter just loves the 13 year old Cidney. I got the 10 week old two weeks ago and Scooter is afraid of him!!! I dont know if Sam, the puppy is just being a puppy, he is VERY playful and has LOTS of energy. He will run and try to jump up on Scooter and when he is successful, he will bite Scooter and hang on. Scooter hates this, doesnt see it as playing and has decide to live on the back of the couch or on the bed because Sam can not get up there yet. I can tell Scooter is unhappy and sad about Sam and I each time I say "no" to Sam, Scooter thinks I am getting on to him making Scooter even more nervous. I am hoping Sam is just being a puppy and will stop doing this as Scooter is not the type to get tough with Sam to make him stop. I hope I dont have a bully in the making! |
WELCOME TO YT!!! I would say that he is just being a puppy, but the biting needs to be addressed immediately. I would not let him bite poor Scooter. That is probably making him more scared and tense. I would put Sam in an x-pen for a while to let your two older babies get used to him. They have to feel like they are still running the household, not the new guy. You can't force the relationship, so that would be the best way to let them sniff each other out and establish the dominance. It will probably let the little guy know that he is NOT the boss. My little one loves other dogs but she can be somewhat freaked out by puppies, I think because of their size. When my friend and fellow YT member Jen, got Tia, Coco would just move away from her. I think it was hard for her to realize there are things smaller than her out there. But eventually they started playing. I bet in no time Sam and Scooter will be friends, you just have to let them decide who's the boss  |
I've noticed that males are a lot more uncomfortable around puppies than females. I have three newborns right now and their Dad jumps and runs every time they move, but my other female just loves them and wants to kiss them all over. When my boy got a sister (9 weeks) he reacted the same way, but now they are inseparable. He'll get use to this new brother in no time at all. I don't think they actually dislike them they are really more fearful of them, but quickly get over this. |
welcome to yt, glad you joined us.... thats a puppy for ya |
Thanks you guys, you have made me feel better already about this and double thanks for the warm welcome! I hope Scooter overcomes his fear of Sam (I need to stop referring to him as Satan in a puppy suit, haha) soon as Scooter is really playful with a personality I have never seen in any other dog. I tell Scooter he must have been born on the funny farm because he loves to do silly things to make me laugh. Scooter laughs too, its the cutest thing to hear a dog laugh. I really got Sam so Scooter would have another brother to play with as Cidney the 13 year old wants to rest more these days. |

Welcome to YT!! :D :D |
welcome. i think a lot of it is finding out where each one belongs in the pack like who is the alpha and so on |
Cidney, I'm having the same problem you are. I just got Zoey on Saturday. She is already 6 months old. Sadie is 14 months old and Maddie (my yellow lab) is almost 8 years old. Zoey runs after Sadie and bites her back legs. Sadie hates that and so she has been hanging out on the top of the couch. She tries to stay away from Zoey as much as possible. I keep trying to show Sadie more love and show Zoey that she is last in the pack. Let me know if things get better. I know they will for both of us, but it is just so hard to watch our little fur babies get their noses out of shape. Good luck. |
well sounds like its just the puppys way of getting scooters attn to play. That is what Maggie does sometimes to kizzy when Kizzy is laying there doing nothing. But Kizzy brings toys up in her face and intices her to grab one end so they can fight over them and she grabs it. Once Kizzy takes it away. she chases her all over the place nipping at kizzys back legs and if kizzy stops and lays down she jumps on her head and they both start biting each other, but you can tell its playing. Its rare for one of them to yelp like its hurt. Kizzy is 8 lbs and Maggie is not even 2 lbs yet. But she really give Kizzy a run for the money. I think after a while scooter will get use to him and figure out he is trying to play, least I hope so. Kizzy didnt know what to do with Maggie when I first got her either. but they are much closer in age than your two are. Good luck with them all and I hope they will become friends. |
