Walking on a leash My Buddy loves to go outsidel However, he pulls on his leash to the limit. He can't pee or poop unless he is at the end of the leash and pulling hard. He can't walk to the mailbox with me unless he is at the end to the leash and walking sideawaysl I tried a small chokechain and he cried and gagged, so I stopped that really fast. I don't want to hurt him I have only had big dogs before, and a chokechain worked well. But, with this little boy, I don't know what to do. How can I get him to walk on a leash like a good little boy? |
Hi first off welcome to YT! Ok never use a choke chain or even a coller on these yorkies the best thing is a harness they have very delicate tracheas and the pressure from a coller could collapse it. walk with treats in your pocket or when he turns away start walking the oppisite direction from him till he gets he needs to walk with you also only give him enough room on the leash to walk right besides you. I am no expert on this but this is what i've heard. Good luck! |
I agree. No choke collars on these little guys. You didn't mention how old Buddy is. Bailey learnt to walk like a lady but only after she was 6 months. There may be someother good tips in the training section. Good luck! |
I trained Kizzy by walking and when she started pulling I just stood there with no movement, not a word and not even looking at her untill she stopped and looked around at me. then she would stand there and wait for me to start walking. Soon she will figure out pulling isnt getting her where she/he wants to go. It might take you 30 minutes to go to your mailbox and back but do it everytime you walk her on a leash. And do it everyday. Soon they will be more patient and quit pulling on it so much. Now I can walk kizzy and if she makes one pull and I stop. she doesnt pull anymore. I got this info from a dog trainer. At the time Kizzy was only about 3 months old. she is 6 months now and no problem with the leash. goodluck |
Sorry, forgot to say :welcome4: |
Welcome. "Gentle Leaders"are also another way to use on puppies that pull. |
You could try a harness. |
Welcome to YT. I just moved to Washington from La Crosse, WI! Still kind of feel like that's my home... I guess, what I do for 'pulling', when I take her for a walk (on a harness), I pull her close to me and keep the leash short and just keep walking... They'll learn. Just loosen it up a little after a while so they can go potty. |
You should never walk a small dog that pulls by it's collar. Especially a yorkie since the breed is known for sometimes carrying the a gene for collapsed tracheas. Pressure from a collar can only enhance damage to their little bitty throats. This is what I did with Harley. If you walk him with his collar he gags and chokes himself until he vomits. No good. If you walk him with his harness he pulls and pulls like a husky until he's exhausted and my arms are sore. No good. So, I tried the face halti. OMG. I don't know if this will work with every dog but it sure has been a God send for me. I bought it from petsmart and now I have the best little behaved boy at my side at all times. If he does begin to pull the strap around his muzzle tightens a little so when he relaxes and comes back to my side it's loose and comfortable (It does not hurt him at all). He even helps me put it on now! If he doesn't do better on the harness I would check the halti out. Also, I had professional help from my trainer at work to help me get it right and to use it correctly. So ask lots of questions! |
Hi & welcome to YT. Please try a harness. There are several different harness types out there. I think it is best to have the leash attached to the harness in the center of the back. I find this also reduces the pulling many dogs like to do. Good luck. |

LOL....at "It might take you 30 minutes to go to your mailbox".....too funny! Francie P.S. Sounds like a great training technique though! |
It shouldnt take 30 minutes to go to the mailbox but if you stop and ignore right from the start, you know how many times that puppy, new to a leash is gonna pull to go its own way? lol. So yes the first few times it might take a while but maybe 30 min is an exgageration (SP) but it will take you longer than just you going alone. But truly this is the way I got Kizzy to walk on a leash. So I tell you, it does work, of course I can only speak for myself. But it never took me 30 minutes. But in case you havent thought of it , really some people in rural areas do have a good little walk to their mail boxes if their house sits way back on their land from the road. Also, I do hope people use a harness. Thats all ive ever used with my dog. collars are bad news for them. |
I have mine walk beside me not in front of me. I only give enough leash that they have to stay right beside me. This is how the dog whisperer shows people to walk their dogs and it works for me |
