Invisible Fence? Does anyone use an invisible fence for thier yorkies? We are looking into them and hear they work well but wanted some yorkie-owner opinions. |
|
I had one when it was just the bigger dogs. No it didn't work well. I even had one get out and get hit by a car. I would have a professional do it if you go for it. I hear that it works better this way. |
there was another thread on this recently but i think the general outcome was not to use one on a little animal like toy breeds and cats |
Remember, an invisible fence may keep your dog in but it won't keep other animals out and that's just not safe. |
My next door neighbor uses on for their 4 yr old giant lab. When I walk snickers I'm always really cautious b/c he will follow us along his yard. Well, 2 days ago, he just walked right past the invisible fence to come see us. I've met the dog b4 (without snickers)but this whole thing was SOOO scary b/c the owners were not outside!! It all turned out ok though:) But, IMO, I would definately not chance it b/c 1. Someone could steal your baby 2. He could walk right through it if he really wanted to 3. Other animals can get in 4. I always worry too much about whats flying over head. I don't let mine out unsupervised. |
Just yesterday my husband mentioned the possibility of getting an invisible fence. My first thought is the hawk I see in my back yard at least once a week. The hawk would probably think two pound Riley is lunch. If Riley outside, I'm outside! |

good for some but not for me I myself do not have it ,but my boss does for his three dogs, they are all good size dogs.Well I house sit for him in the summer. He showed me how it works when he lets the dogs outside. One of his dogs got to close to the restricted area, when I ever saw that poor dogs jump up an squirm like a worm and with a scream I will never forget I WAS ABOUT TO CRY ...I told him that I will not let them out without their leash because I never want to see or hear that again.......:thumbdown not for me....after they train for a while I'm sure they will get the hang of it,but not in front of me ... |
i can answer this question first hand. i live on a busy street and decided to get the fence installed. When i first called i said that i had a 3lb Yorkie (which she's 4) and they said she would get a cat collar. They came out installed it and i paid for the training package and all. She was training great with the flags, well it was time for her first correction and thats when everything changed. The trainer made us walk across the street call her and let her get the correction (it was the lowest it could go) and i've NEVER EVER seen something like i saw when she got that correction. She was flipping around like a fish out of water, yelped like i NEVER heard of, if that trainer did not pull her out - she would've never got out until the correction was finished (15 seconds) i broke down immediately and cried. i feel scared for what i witnessed and felt horrible for what happened to her. I made them come unistall it and get my money back. she didnt want to go outside after that. Also i dont have a big yard so when it was run up the driveway and our cars were parked in it - it would trigger it sooner, which i didnt think was good. I would recommend it for bigger dogs but not for smaller dogs. A dog that could handle a corection like that. Good Luck with whatever you choose. |
Something I don't understand and perhaps someone could enlighten me is: Why not just put in a fenced yard? I could never even consider a shock for a dog. They are like my children. I couldn't have that done to my children and if it's not good enough for my children, then it's not good enough for my doggies!:D |
I've never had one but I heard it works to keep your dog in but not to keep other dogs out. Does anyone know if this is true or not? Just what I heard someone say. |
Would not waste the money We had one for a larger outside dog. He as many of the others have stated got out. He was hit by a car and sustained fatal injuries. I will never put trust in the invisible fence again. |
