Are all neutered males still interested in mounting? I neutered my male when he was 7 months and he is now 11 months old. My female went into heat a few days ago, and he won't stop mounting her. Today while she was busy eating her food and his, she allowed him to finish his business (for the first time) before snarling at him and pulling away. I was surprised to see him frozen for about 5 minutes, his "pee-er" hanging to the ground, his hind legs tense and what looked like a scrotum protruding out at the base of his "pee-er" (I thought that (testicles) were removed when he was neutered?). I didn't think neutered males were able to get interested enough to finish??? Please explain!!! |
That is part of the penis and it ties the two dogs together while mating, it is not his testicals. I don't understand, if he is nutered obviously you are not mating the two, then why didn't you tell him to stop. They can be discouraged from behaving in such a manner. One or both of them could get hurt. |
I didn't realize they could get hurt - please explain (am new at this). Also they both mount each other and I read in one thread that it was a form of play - thus was not concerned .... until what I witnessed today - so yes I will be discouraging this type of behaviour. (Thanks for the anatomy lesson). |
Oh -- I guess I'm also still looking for the answer -- is this typical behavior of neutered males? |
My neutered male yorkie mounted my female chihuahua who was in heat and I was completely floored at the time. I heard him crying and when I went to check on him they were tied. I had no idea that neutered males could still be aroused and perform. I think my vet should've informed me since he knew we had an intact female in the home. She was a rescue dog and has since been spayed. When I spoke to my vet about the behavior he said yes it's not uncommon for this to happen but no pregnancy will occur obviously. I still think I should've been warned. He also never marked prior to that but he has since she went into heat that one time. I just recently found out on this board that marking can occur in neutered males who are around females in heat. |
Yes of course they're still going to mount. It's instinct. but can anything actually become of it? Not at all and I don't understand, I guess, why only neuter/spay one pet? accidents could still happen. obviously not with the altered pet but if the other unaltered pet got loose you never know.:aimeeyork |
Yes - it surprised me too! I thought he would still mount (whether b/c playing or instinct) but I didn't understand that he could still be aroused enough to climax (thought that would be eliminated with removal of the testerone). I haven't noticed him marking -- I hope that doesn't start. mylittletigger: I imagine there are alot of reasons for just spaying/neutering only one pet. In my case I had purchased the male as a stud and to breed with my female. I was told by the by the breeders that this was the tiniest male they had ever had and he wld be 2-3 pounds -- he was shipped all the way to Canada from Oklahoma and when I received him he was not a tiny puppy and turned into a 7lb male -- my female is only 5 pounds, so I neutered my male. I am still breeding my female but with another breeder's stud. |
Wow I had no idea this could happen! I'm floored! My female has been spayed but my mom has an intact female she plans to breed and a neutered male so I will definitely warn her. |
My 10 month old neutered male humps my 3 months old baby female. I think it's a dominance thing with him, though. |
Neutered males will definitely hump. Females will to for that matter. It's the actual ability to complete the act that shocked me. |
I've always heard that the mounting was a way to establish dominance. I have a 4 1/2 yo Yorkie (LittleFoot) who has never even tried to mount any of the dogs to my knowledge. I also have another Yorkie (Lancelot) who is 18 months old who has began mounting LittleFoot. My Maltie (Bear) has always tried mounting LittleFoot. Of couse, they are all male and have been neutered. LittleFoot will growl at them. When I see them I always scold them. Vet says all perfectly normal, just depends on the dog. |
My neutered male doesnt try to mount my female but she is spayed too so I quess that makes the difference |
