swimming pools?? need advice! Okay, My cousin just bought a Maltese on friday and she was only 8 weeks (too young I think) well she just had her last shot that day. She has taken her to a pet store and her friends house that same day, I told her I didn't think it was a good idea because she just had her last shot and can still catch something. Today she text'd me and said "Do you think it is alright for her to go in a swimming pool?" This pool is at a friends apartment complex! I called her and said I didn't think it was safe yet since she just got her last shot on Friday, plus the chlorine can irritate her skin. I said I think you need to keep her out of the public til at least a few weeks after her last shot if not til she is about 14-16 weeks! This is kind of what I think since reading so much on here! What do you all think? I would love any input!!!!!! |
Wow ...She needs to NOT take her little 8 week old out .... and especially into a pool - what is she thinking ? That's so young she almost still needs to be with her mom...and she needs her shots. I wouldn't do it - If she doesn't believe you - have her come here - I have a feeling everyone will be saying the same thing.... Just ask her " Why Chance it ?" If she's like all of us here - she'd never forgive herself if something happened or her dog got sick. She'll have plenty of time to take her out when she's a little older and bigger - and STRONGER |
I think she is way too young to be in a swimming pool. Shes also too young to be taken out places. My Vet said I could not take my dogs out ot places untill they were done with their third set of shots. |
she had her third set of shots on friday August 4th but I told her she doesn't need to go ANYWHERE!!! she said well she was only there for 30 minutes, and I told her I still don't think its a good idea! Then went to the pet store, I said gosh a pet store is worse, she said well I think they keep it pretty clean. I said you never know what is in there! She replied saying well I held her the whole time, Now she is at another friends house today and her boyfriend was trying to talk her into putting the puppy in the pool! I said well I personally would take a chance of her getting sick! It will cost a lot of money to get here better you may lose her! I told her it's your puppy you can do what you want but if it were my puppy there is NO WAY I would take that chance! Thanks for all your input! |
I don't want to scare you or say something dramatic - but Parvo is back on the rise - Pet Stores are the worst place she should have taken her - she really needs to wait till the puppy builds up her immune system and has ALL her shots...she doesn't have them all at 8 weeks. If she's smart she'll listen to you - you're absolutely right in everything your saying to her. |
its impossible for an 8 week old puppy to have had its third set of puppy shots. at 8 weeks old they should only be getting their first set of shots. the next at 12 and the last at 16. |
she got her from a breeder here in kansas she said she just got her third shots and she is 8 weeks, I'm not sure what the puppy shot schedule is, since I don't have my puppy yet! (I'm waiting so I can know all I can before I get her) This breeder is a friend of the Vet breeder that I want to get my puppy from (I had three recommendations) and This vet recommended this lady! I hope her dog doesn't get sick! She thinks that since the pet store was an upscale pet store in Kansas City that it is clean. I don't think so thought! Ohh gosh what do I do! I want her puppy to have the best life! |
Yes 8 weeks is way t soon to have had 3 sets of shots. At 8 weeks they have only had one set |
puppy shots are given every 3-4 weeks in series. in order for that puppy to have gotten its 3rd puppy shot at 8 weeks she would have gotten her first when she was still in the uterus. i would question her breeder and that vet. it just doesn't seem right |
I guess I'll have to ask her about what the breeder said, everytime I ask her what she said, she can't remember!! sheesh |
that can't be right she needsto call more vet as the puppys need shots at 6,9,12,15 weeks or somewhere near that! you can't get rabies before 12weeks my puppys due his 12 week shots and he stays home for now. |
I'm afraid if you keep after her it will hurt your friendship. I know that you are just looking out for the puppy, but it's pretty obvious that she isn't going to listen to you anyway. I think you are right to be concerned, but some people just cannot be told, the have to learn everything the hard way. Unfortunatley sometimes innocent beings get hurt in the wake. |
My vet reminded me, which I knew not to let Max around other dogs, and really around alot of people till his shots were done...Max is a big dog (gsd) not a yorkie or maltese..all dogs are at a high risk before all there shots are done, but the small dogs worry me more....try to convince her to stay put for awhile....:) |
we are cousins so we can be pretty honest with eachother, I talked to her again tonight and I think she will listen, she said she will keep her home for now. She said that she really wants my opinion because she knows that I have been doing so much research about yorkies lately. I can't wait to get my baby! |
I am glad that you got through to her. I wish she had let her stay with the breeder atleast until 10 weeks!! Pet stores are not the safest place!! I don't even like taking my 3 year old yorkie there!! |
She might have had three wormings, but no way 3 vaccines. Some do the first at 6 weeks. I prefer to wait until 8 weeks for the first vaccine and keep them away from all people and animals. |
Yeah...we all know we get impatient and want to take our baby everywhere NOW We all know that feeling, right... We get the puppy and start making plans. Taking the pup to the park, starting playdates with other pups, showing off at stores and friends etc... Especially, the younger the puppy, the longer the wait. I got mine at the age of 9 weeks, and he just got his second set of shots now (10 weeks).I know I have to wait 3 more weeks for the last vaccine. And I was advised against taking the pup out in a private house backyard (no more than a few minutes, as the vet said). It's not only about the viruses from other dogs but also from wild animals, especially skunks, possums and such. But oh well, WOULD LOVE TO TAKE MY BABY PLACES. But his health is more important. So I will wait (sigh).... After that, I'll have his whole lifetime to enjoy doing all that fun stuff outdoors!:) |
Why don't you refer her to MalteseTalk.com? It does appear that she would benefit from the experiences of other Maltese owners and will give you two something to talk about without you being in the puppy police department. :) |
1 Attachment(s) I have a Maltese also. Misha never went anywhere until after her shots, and Never in a public pool. We had a pool business, and I know the chemicals alone are terrible for their skin & hair. Not to mention if they drink some. A kiddie pool just for them is fine with fresh water, but make sure you condition after. |
