bloody stools, need ANSWERS ASAP Kacee is 9 weeks old and she had coccidia. The dr gave me the medicine for it and she took the last one Friday. Today she had a little diarreah and the 2nd time it had blood in it. Then the 3rd time she just passed a few drops of blood. Could this mean she still had coccidia or maybe thats the end of it and now its all cleaned out? Kizzy had coccidia and she had to take 2 rounds of medicine for 5 days before she got over hers. This was Kacees 1st round of medicine. They both had the same kind of medicine, but I never saw blood in Kizzys stool but she could of had some a time or two since she pottys outside. Kacee is being trained to go out too but this time it happend in the house is why I saw it. Has anyones puppy ever done this before that had coccidia or had the treatment? She hasnt done it but 3 times and the first time no blood, and not really bad diarreah, but pretty loose and all three times was one behind the other in a matter of about 10 minutes. So far no more. If she does do it a few more times today I will call the vet. I was hoping someone here may have seen this happen before and know if its anything serious or not. I need answers asap. |
I'm really sorry i can't help but mabey you should ring the vet and see what he says? i'm sure someone will be able to help you good luck |
I'm waiting to see how she does the rest of the day. If she keeps doing it or it gets worse then I will call the vet. But just that couple of times might be it if it was just the last of the coccidia left that was killed and now that may have cleaned it all out. I'm hoping thats all. thanks for the reply tho. |
Chachi had bloody diahrea before and the vet wasnt concened about it. He said it can happen when they have diahrea. However since she has had coccidia I would talk to the vet about it. |
I know that it is common to have blood when you have diarrhea more than once. However, since she was being treated for the Coccidia, I would check with the vet. I don't know how long it takes for the medicine to work, but she probably shouldn't be having diarrhea now if she was finishing up the meds. May need round 2 of treatment. Good luck and keep us posted. |
thanks all. So far she hasnt had anymore diarreah. So maybe it was from the coccidia, but I will call the vet tomorrow, I have to call anyway to make kizzys appt for Friday. So I'll see what he says whether she does it anymore or not, just to know if it happens again. If he wants to see her then i'll take her in. |

Coccidia treatment should be with a Sulpha drug. If you are int he US, Albon is the drug of choice. They should be on it minimum 7 days. The drug does not kill the coccidia. It stops them from reproducing and that is how the problem is stopped over time. Coccidia is around everywhere. Where you get an overpopulation like that is when a pup has been stressed in particular at weaning, going to a new home, vaccinations, any or all of these can bring on an episode. As the bowel is inflammed from the coccidia invasion, I usually put them on boiled rice with a little cooked white meat chicken or a little gastro tinned food with the rice. That will help bind the bowel and will allow the bowel to heal. |
I tried the rice yesterday, she wouldnt eat a bite. But she wasnt eating anything. all is better tonight since we went to the vet today. |

Coccidia My pup had coccidiosis when I got her. The vet gave me two doses of an oral medicine and told me to give one then and one a week later. I never saw blood and he told me the next time I took her in that she was clear. |
