Husband is worried.... :( Okay let me ask ya'll a kinda weird question. Well, my husband and I live in a house right now, but were renting. Our realtor told us we were not allowed to have pets. Well, about a month ago, we broke down and got a cat anyway. I can't stand not having pets around... I love animals, and without them, I just feel incomplete. Well, as most of you know, I plan on getting a yorkie soon. My husband is all worried about our realtor finding out.... But in our rental agreement, it says we have to have two days notice from her before she is allowed to come to our house and do "interior inspections". I don't know what could happen if she found out? Have any of you done something like this before, had pets somewhere your not allowed to have them? I was just wondering... Thanks! |
you can always hide the dog you have to hide the cat whats one more and yorkies are so small you have 2 days before to find somewhere and why are they doing an interior inspection if you dont mind me asking ?? |
This is kinda a toughy with I am sure a lot of view points towards a situation as you are in. I've been asked before to move when I rented an apartement with a no pet policy and I tried to sneak a dog in... Maybe you can find a house to rent that does not mind you having a pet and then you wouldn't have to worry so much about breaking the lease rules. Good luck! |
Yeah, I know that's what I told my hubby! It was his idea to get the cat.... Well, it just says in our contract that they can do interior inspections with a 2 day notice first. I don't know why they would do an inspection? We've lived here since December, and our realtor has never came over the house or called us about anything... My mom told me that they normally wouldn't do an inspection or bother you at all unless they think your doing something wrong (like having parties, or neighbors are complaining about us...etc). But, I was just wondering if any of you are in the position or have been? This is why my husband and I are looking into buying a house, I told him if we do, than I am getting all the yorkies I want!!! LOL.... |
Do it or not! ;) :thumbdown I know you love pets and want to get a yorkie but I would not go for it if the realtor found out or the inspector then you might not be able to live in the rented house anymore But still,go for it You never know! :) |
In our last rented house I had already signed a lease before the landlord said - you have NO pets right ? I swallowed and said no - I really needed to have a house by the end of the day at that time....So...what we did when he came over to inspect our roof once was I took the THREE dogs for a ride in the car till he was gone - We never had inspections or anything like what you're talking about thought - I wouldn't like that !! I would think since you already have the cat you could casually mention it - and about the yorkie - I don't know how you can handle that - they do bark and if your landlord came over unexpectedly - they would know for sure ! |
Go For It :) Oh, it's so good to hear I'm not alone. 3 years ago a friend offered me a free yorkie. He was adorable. I talked to my landlady because several of the tenants here have cats and she said absolutely "no dogs". I didn't understand cuz yorkies are smaller than cats and don't climb the curtains. I ended up not getting the dog. This same friend affered me another about 3 months ago. This time I didn't ask. I feel if I have to move, I'll move. I wont let him go. He 's soooo worth it. I say Go For It. If you have to move. Move. Good Luck |
We live in an apartment that does not allow pets but most people here have them anyway, but our lease also states that we are given two days notice for inspections etc.. Our lease is up at the end of May so we are going to move. Luckily Sebastian does not bark, the girl upstairs has a yorkie-poo and he howls and barks all night and all day. If we get caught they claim they will charge us a fee plus immediate eviction. But like I stated before so many people around here have them so I don't see the difference. (I do but my hubby chose to get him for me anyways) |
Yeah, it seems like a lot of people do it anyway. We are really wanting to move out of this house anyway... Did they ever "inspect" your apartment sebastiansmom?? I don't know if they would inspect our house anyway. We do everything were suppose to do, EXCEPT not having animals...lol. I could see them coming over if we were not doing something right.... So I don't know. I agree, a yorkie is well worth it! |
We get inspections Hey there, I live in an apartment and I have three yorkies. 6lbs, 3.5 lbs. and 2.5 lbs.. When they are going to give inspections I put them away where they cant be seen. If I need to I take them out. They are great to have a around and I wouldn't change a thing; We moved from a house to a apartment, since my husband changed locations. We are waiting for our house to be built. So I went from having five dogs down to two dogs. Then I couldn't resist and got another yorkie. =0) We had to get rid of the golden and westie, since we are living in a small apartment and they needed more room. SO I say go for it. carolynne |
When I lived in apartment will parents as young we brought Jane and sneak her in. The Management never. Plus we weren't the only ones. Almost everyone in the apartments had pets.Cats, dogs, you name it. Everyone used to go the playground and let they dogs play. Now we just moved in our first house in years. And now Jane is still run runs around like a maniac. Because her first and very own backyard. But have to share with the new puppy. Maybe you could ask your realtor if you could pay a extra fee for your pets? Just suggestion! :) |
We haven't had any inspections yet but if we do we will just go out to the park for awhile I guess. |
My boyfriend and I snuck Stewie in and out of his apartment building for a long time. Then, he became friends with the landlord; the landlord would come hang out at his apt. It really screwed us over because I always bring Stew over there and I felt like I coudln't in case the landlord stopped by. It was awkward. Finally, my boyfriend just told the landlord that Stewie and I stay over very very often and that Stewie was housetrained (not true at the time). Now his landlord is in love with Stewie :P Who can blame them? |
our apartment complex allows pets, but you have to pay a deposit first....... needless to say, we didnt have the deposit after buying toby and all his things....... so....... he was illegal for a WHILE, i know the stress you are going through.... legally they had to give us 2 days notice before coming into our apartment, ....... we were really worried they woudl just stop by and here him...... now however he is legal, and since that time they have had people coming in and out fo our apartment for inspections a LOT |
My apartment complex allows pets but the deposit was $500! So we hid our Maltese from them for over a year before we finally decided to pay the deposit. Our biggest issue with hiding him was that maintenance would just show up to do random stuff like changing the filters without any notice and Tuffy loves to bark when someone knocks so that was pretty scary. Whenever I did get notice that they were going to do something I would just take him to the park and we would just hang out for a while and then head back home. My sister also was hiding her dog and the apartment complex did find out and told her that she was in violation of her lease. They told her that she had 24 hours to either get rid of the dog or pay the deposit.. so naturally she paid the deposit. Now we have our Yorkie and I don't want to plunk down another $500 for her so we are going to try and hide her as long as we can. The thing I hate about having to hide is that everytime I hear someone coming up the stairs I freak out! I'd say if she has to give you notice that she'll be coming by then you'll have time to hide your dog before she does.. and if she shows up unannounced then she'll be in violation of your contract as much as you would be for having the dog so maybe you'd have an argument there. Good luck! |
I would think really hard about if you got caught if you do go through with getting the puppy. I also got a puppy when I knew I couldn't my apartment complex is far away from the front building and I didn't think the landlord would ever know...but she found out and I was told she had to leave IMMEDIATLEY! so now my baby is 115 miles away with my mom until I come home for the summer..I am moving into a house where I can have her next semester but this is going to be the longest month of my life. I just left her with my parents today and when I got home from work tonite I almost started crying...the first thing I do when i get home from work is snuggle my puppy and take her outside...I don't think I can go without her!!! It is the worst!! |
That is a good point mystify... Glad to know I am not the only one breakin the rules!!! LOL Thanks everyone for the info and advice!!! Melanie :) |
Food for thought In the event you decide to bring this wonderful new baby into your welcoming family. If they find out and say you have to get rid of them or move then what. I think though at times we can get away with stuff. Lord knows I have. I have three paid for one. But my apartment allows them so it is not to weird to take them out. I have to hide the excess. Just make sure before you do this. I know that if they said its them or you. Just food for thought |
Not a good idea Hiding an animal is never a good idea. I used to own rentals and I allowed pets, but I charged an extra deposit and most often it was used to repair things the animals damaged. I am an animal lover and when I got my two boys I went to the landlord and offered them the moon if they would allow my two babies, they would not budge. Luckily they did give me the time to locate another place to live. Here in CA, they only have to give you 72 hours to either get rid of the animal or move. What if your landlord finds out and gives you notice, do you have an alternative place in mind? Will your pups possibly end up in rescue? When you take on the responsibility, and knowingly break your lease, please have an alternative plan or the money to move in mind. Here in CA there are not a lot of places that allow dogs, I was lucky and found such a place (actually hate the complex, but they allow my babies). One thing to keep in mind, if you have a pet for some time (even though your lease says no pets) and the landlord knows about and does nothing for a period of time, that can be considered accepting the pet without changing the lease. Same thing as if you continually pay your rent late and the landlord accepts that payment for a period of time, paying your rent late constitutes a change in the lease that they accept. A good book for anyone renting whether tenant or landlord is a basic book on both sides rights. Good luck |
I've done this a long time ago. In an apartment. I snuck my poodle in. We didn't live there long before we moved out though-felt too risky. I would imagine it wouldn't be good if the person caught the dog. If it were me, I think I would start looking for something that alowed dogs. I couldn't live without a pet, and I would want to be relaxed and comfortable about the situation-not have to hide. This is a personal preference though. Everyone will have different answers. Good luck with whatever you decide. ;) |
My daughter got a puppy when living in an apartment where no pets were allowed. That puppy ended up spending a lot of time at my house because she couldn't leave him there alone for fear he'd bark...which he did now and then. Other's in the apartment building found out about Baxter and pretty soon lots of them had puppies. The resident manager found out about my daughter's puppy, but thankfully, she liked my daughter and told others she had the dog for medical reasons. The landlord never did find out about the puppy but we figured it was just a matter of time. She now bought her own home, but while in the apartment, there was always the stress of sneaking the dog in and out and whenever maintenance or someone else was expected in the building, we would have to get Baxter out. I hope you can find a place to rent that will accept pets...it is just so much more enjoyable to not have to worry about keeping them hidden and quiet! Best wishes! |
I know is going to be hard but if you decide to get your baby you should have a backup plan. I think is better to be safe than sorry. Good luck in your decision. |
I live in an apartment that allows dogs, but you have to pay a $200 non-refundable pet deposit as well as an extra $35 a month per pet. I found out that the complex's policy is to replace the carpet once a year if there are pets in the apartment, or every 2 years if there are not pets. Well our carpet was not new when we moved in. Therefore, they will replace our carpet when we move, NO MATTER WHAT! So why in the world would I pay them more just to do what they are going to do anyway!!??? That's my logical reasoning as to why we are not paying the deposit or extra monthly fee. We got Hercules in November and had some bad bathroom plumbing issues for a while. When maintenance came out, we put him in the bedroom. But he isn't a barker, so that isn't a problem. We got Athena last month, and she is a lot different than Hercules! She'll bark when she hears people. We got notice a week after we got her that they were going to come out to do a "yearly maintenance" check. Luckily a good friend lives in the complex as well, so I took my dogs over to her apartment when they did our check. (She also has an "illegal" dog, so hers stayed at our apartment when she had her check). So yes, you can get away with it. We have for almost 6 months now! But be prepared to pay extra when you move if there is damage. But if you watch your pup closely and carefully like you should when they are so young, it should be minimal. |
This is actually how I ended up with my Biddy. My mom owns a condo, and it doesn't say anywhere that she can't have pets. So she got Biddy as a puppy, but soon the neighbors started to complain about the noise (even though I can't imagine that Biddy's baby bark was very loud!). Andway the condo committee got together & told my mom that she had to get rid of the puppy. She called me in tears and I reluctantly decided to take Biddy in. It was the best thing that ever happened to me!!! Now I have 2 yorkies and I am so grateful for them. Although, I keep telling my mom that she should be paying child support... |
Worried My daughter purchased a beautiful little silky terrier. I fell in love with it. Told everyone about my new "grandson". Well two weeks later I have the puppy because her lease said no pets and the neighbor complained because he barked. Now she is totally devastated and I have a new puppy. I love him... and am very attached to him now.. but she is still devastated and they are signed into their lease for a year. If you are going to do it, make sure you able to deal with the consequences - possibly a broken heart! |
I justed wanted to add that there is no such thing as an "immediate eviction". There are legal processes and procedures that must be followed with notices , etc. In Claifornia, if the property management discovered the dog, they would serve you with a 3 day notice to comply with the terms of the agreement and remove the dog from the premises. If you failed to do that they would file an Unlawful Detainer action against you and set a hearing date no sooner than 20 day. Once the hearing is over you have an additional 5 days to move so you would always have at least 28 days before you would have to move if they caught you with the dog. |

Good info... Thanks Kim. My husband and I plan on moving anyway, because you guys are right when you say it is much more enjoyable to have pets when you don't have to hide it! But, obviously, a lot of people do do it. But thanks everyone! |
I've never lived anywhere that pets haven't been allowed. Before I had Frankie I did live somewhere you where you could only have 1 pet and I had 3 cats, so I lied about that I never was concerned even when people would come over 2 of the cats would hide anyway. But I have thought about this recently I'm currently living with my mom, due to my dad passing and a bad break upon my end. And I just recently started panicing about this now that I have 3 cats and a dog, I'm never going to find anywhere that will allow that so I will definately be keeping that little fact from my future landlord.. ;) |
