Rawhide Dangerous? I've heard it mentioned a few times that rawhide is dangerous for yorkies. I was wondering if anyone could explain why. Thanks! |
I believe that rawhide is dangerous because it is a choking hazard. Someone else probably knows more about it than me, but that is what I was told. I know there are people who give their yorkies rawhide, but I don't risk it myself. There are other/safer alternatives. I give Louie Flossies by Merrick. I think it is beef tendon. He likes them and pieces don't break off to get lodged in his throat. Just like with anything you give your yorkie to chew on, they need to be supervised. Hope this helps.:) |
I heard, many years ago, so I'm not sure of the truth to this, that rawhide could be made of any "leftover" leather-type material. For example, I was told it might be made of leather seats from junked cars - which would have chemicals/dyes, etc. Now, I have no idea if that is true or not - but someone just said on another thread that her vet told her not to give rawhides due to chemicals. So, I think that unknown, combined with the choking hazard, makes rawhides a bad choice. |
In addition to being a choking hazzard, I'm pretty sure they aren't easily digested. |
My vet explained it to me like this.... It's very rough on their stomachs and can easily upset it as well as it is a choking hazard. It breaks off easily in large chuncks and therefore can get stuck easily in the throat area. He recommends Booda Cornstartch bimples because they crumble rather then chunk off and they're highly digestable. Tigger loves them. |
Rawhide is dangerous to all dogs, not just yorkies, because it causes digestion problems. |
I have always been scared to give em to my dogs cause I heard they were a choking hazard. |
I took all rawhides away from our yorkies when they started having bloody stool. My vet told me this happens a lot. My yorkies have had none since too. |
Can Get Choked Bad With Them!!!!!!!! I WILL NEVER EVER EVER buy them again for my Yorkies... I use to get them for our older ones but right before Tiffanie had her puppies I got them some and let me tell U they scared the life out of me!!! She is bigger then Teddy and a silky well her teeth are so much bigger then Teddy's and she was chewin' on one and got choked bad...So bad I thought she was gonna die! My husband had to pull it out of her throat it was stuck...She was hacking & coughin' tryin' to get it up and couldn't if he hadn't gotten it out for her we might of lost her & our puppies!!!!!! SO I SAY NO WAY!!!! DON'T EVER USE THEM THIS IS A PRIM EXAMPLE OF HOW DANGEROUS THEY ARE!!!!!!!!!! Hmmm.. good thing my little guy isn't crazy about rawhides! What about the cow heels or hooves or whatever they are that you can buy in pet stores? Now THAT he is CRAZY about. |
rawhides can swell up in their stomach and cow hooves can break their teeth because they are so hard, pigs ears are not good either I have read on the internet, the pieces can break off. They reccomend only 3 things for dogs cornstarchbones, better than ears and I cant remember the third one. I do not leave anything out for chester. |
