My cat clawed my 11 wk baby (Gia) Okay I've had Gia for 3 weeks and I also have two cats. I have been trying to get the cats use to Gia I usually monitor them when they are around eachother. And when I see things getting out of hand I'll separate them. Anyway today I was on the floor with Ash (the male cat) & Gia then all of a sudden Ash takes a swing at Gia . Gia stepped back and started crying then I noticed a pool of blood coming from her neck. That's all I needed to see I rushed Gia to the Animal Hospital right away. To make a long story short Gia has to little cuts, the vet cleaned her cuts, and gave me antibiotic to give her for 7 days. Gia is doing fine, running & playing, & barking as usual (Thank God)... But I don't know what to do with my cats. Everyone says it's going to take time but I'm afraid to trust the cats around her, plus I don't want to expose her to being clawed at all the time . What should I do? Can the cats ever learn to accept her? Or should I try to find them a new home? |
I think they will eventually accept each other and maybe even become friends. In the meantime, I'd get a pair of nail clippers and trim the nails of the cats! |
How do you feel about getting the cats declawed rather than finding new homes for them? |

To get the cats declawed you have to have the procedure done within the first year, my cats are going on 3 now plus I heard the procedure is very painful for them. I had thought about it before but my vet recommended that I didn't so I never went through with it. I do cut their nails weekly though |
I would be very careful. I've heard of cat's swatting puppies with there paws, and blinding them. Their nails can seriously injure a puppies eyes. I feel bad for your cats and your puppy. your cat's don't know any better. Maybe declawing them is a good idea, like someone previously posted. I hope it all works out 4 u:p |

DON'T DO IT! !! :thumbdown IT'S TOO PAINFUL AND TO THINK YOU'RE ACTUALLY CUTTING OFF A PART OF THEIR KNUCKLES. YOU WOULDN'T CUT OFF YOUR YORKIES KNUCKLES NOW WOULD YOU? |
ok so how long have you had your cats? considering you've only had your yorkie three weeks I would think you'd get rid of it first, please don't hate me other yt'rs, but it makes sense. The cats are acting on instincts and they can't help it and neither can you. The most you can do is supervise them for now and get "Soft Paws" they're glue on nails for cats that are soft and prevent the cats from scratching things, and the nails shed off as their normal nails would and you just keep replacing them. Your cats are doing what comes naturally. I'm sorry your puppy got hurt, but when you got the puppy you knew you were taking a risk and that that risk may have consiquences. a couple scratches was sort of to be expected, and they may be establishing the picking order. My friend has a cat who is the Alpha pet and the dog knows this. It's not fair to get rid of the cats for following their instincts, just see how it goes for a while and try the soft paws. |
They will get along with her, it will just take alittle time....I have 3 cats, 1 diva cat, 1 cry baby, 1 bad a, they all weight twice as much as Lexie or more...She is the cat chaser, she jumps on them from the bed, she chases them around the house, and she sleeps next to them in her bed..(they all want in her bed) It will just take time...Most dogs know how far to push, and sense when to stay away, she is still a baby give her time...but please please don't declaw your cats...The cats maybe alitte jealous of the new baby too. If you have had them that long, you know how cats act...:) |
I've had the my cats going on 3 yrs and I honestly love them, I'm just scared their going to take her eye out or something. I mean Ash clawed at her while I was sitting right there supervising them & Gia wasn't even paying any attention to him at the time, what if I wasn't there though? I could only imagine it would have been worst. And Gia seems not to understand when the cats start hissing at her, all she wants to do is play & you know how pups play (run, chase, bark) and my cats are very sensitive & don't want to play so when they start hissing at Gia, she starts barking. It's really crazy I knew it wasn't going to be love at first sight but I didn't know to this extent because once I found out I was getting Gia I got advice from my vet & the breeder on them adjusting & they both said the same thing. " That it would take time but they will learn to be the best of friends" Gia's breeder had cats so Gia is use to cats but my cats have never been around other animals I'll give them one more chance & buy the soft paws but if anything like this happens again i will have no choice I can't risk my puppy getting her eyes clawed out, or getting her ears torn. My sister in law in Virginia already said she would take the cats if it comes down to it. I would never get them declawed after the vet explained what the procedure actually did plus thy've had their claws all this time I wouldn't take them away from them now. |
I had big problems with my youngest cat when I got Holly. He actually attacked her a couple of times in the garden. What I did was to throw water on him--he soon realised that that was a no go. Inside I used a spray bottle. within 4 weeks or so they were good friends and now play and sleep together. He is about 6 times the size of tiny Holly, but now sheaths his claws when they play. If I can see he is irritated, I distract her with a toy, walk etc. to give him some peace. Good luck. |
Oh my,I am dealing with this now! Diesel is a year old and the cat is a year old. The cat STILL takes the chance to attack him. The cat will even attack our German Shepherd!!! He will go for their eyes on top of it! I even caught the cat on top of Diesel one time. I will be honest it has taken everything I've got NOT to get rid of the cat!!! He belongs to my 9 year old and it would not go over very well. Right now until things get better or she gets the nerve up to let him go out he stays in the basement! If he isn't in my daughter's bedroom then he is in the basment! The basment hasn't been finished yet but he has windows that he sits in tons of toys and a bed down there. IT is heated and cooled just like the rest of the house. Sadly that is my only choice right now. I keep his claws clipped but there isn't much you can do to protect the dogs from the TEETH! This will be the LAST cat that we ever get. I have even thought about having the cat declawed if he isn't going out. So we will se how things go. Michelle |
My cat and dog are like siblings, sometimes they are best friends (laying, sleeping and playing), sometimes they can't stand each other. Just make sure that you keep an eye on them and trim you cats nails. |

Sorry about your little Gia. I'm glad she's ok and wasn't hurt worse. It may just take some more time for your cats to get use to Gia and accept her. Don't worry, everything will work out. :p |
