I had to rehome a loveable, affectionate, little parrot (that was so bonded to me - and me to it) when I got my little Yorkie. The parrot was used to being out of the cage a lot and going around the house with me, but after the pup jumped on him three times (playfully - but this could still have easily hurt him or killed him) - I decided that if that little bird was killed or seriously hurt by my little dog - I would never forgive myself. So - my little parrot went to a wonderful new home. I still miss him every day. Of course, I do!
Our pets - when they go to new homes where they are loved and taken care of adjust very quickly.
My only advise would be - that since he is being rehomed this one time - be as sure as possible that the next home will be as perfect as possible for him. I don't doubt that a lot of people will want your little guy - but you just be very particular about where he goes.
PS: My rehoming my parrot was a real success story. I hate to admit it but even though he was very happy and really loved here -- he really went to a much better home. Now he has a stay-at-home mom (which I know he will love - he was always so excited to see me whenever I came home). And, he has three other bird friends (one he's in love with). Plus at that house, the bird cage doors are open and the birds can come and go as they want. It's like bird heaven for him! And, they adore him. So - I really lucked out.
Good luck finding the perfect home for your little pup.
