Nail Clipping Sadie has only been with me for five days, but I know the time will come when I need to clip her nails. My vet said I could file them, but it takes forever. I am really afraid of doing this. Any tips? Thanks. Kate |
if you keep at it and just clip a LITTLE BIT AT A TIME..... then you should be fine, keep some stypic (sp?) powder handy just in case you do nick the sensitive part of the nail........... you might want to try working up to it now (getting her used to handling her paws...... rubbing them....... pushing out her nails......... having the clippers near her while you are doing these things....... and then eventually clipping)....... also, i tried the "nail fileing method" and toby HATED IT, he loves to relax and let me trim his nails with the clippers he prefers it that way........ also, to keep the nails filed down to a managable length you could walk him on pavement |
My vet will clip them for free, but we have Max groomed once a month & so far that seems to be enough to keep his nails under control. We have clippers & powder at home just in case, but I don't like doing it myself. |
I just do a little at a time but I wish i could get them shorter but with them being dark it makes it hard. I was adviced to do it outside in the sun so the quick can be seen, or to put a flashlight on them to mark the quick. Haven't tried either so can't tell you guys it will work!! guess I will wait for replies here too. |
I also us a bright light to see the quick, and it does help, I use a regular human nail clipper and it works great. It is not so cumbersom (sp????) as the pet ones, and you can see what you are doing easier. my Husband ususally holds Jack while I am doing this, so that he stays still. Hope this helps. |
I use human clippers too. Much easier, defiitly keep quick stop on hand. My mom uses a drummel tool on her tiny dogs. I works great after you get them use to the noise. I have already started to clip the puppies nails they are two weeks today. Good Luck. |
I've heard that on the black nails (which most yorkies have) that after you cut the nail if it looks white on the inside you can cut a tad more... anyone else heard this before? I've done this and it seems to work... I think the white part is dry or dead nail... any thoughts? |
I agree I agree that the white is the dead part, the problem in not knowing how much further to go. My vet said that if I just cut the tip or "claw" part off it would be fine, and to do it about every 10-14 days. Jack also walks on asphalt once a day for almost a mile, so that helps. |
I just cut the claw part too. I bought the 'dog nail trimmers' from the pet store but I found that my regular 'human' nail clippers tend to be easier to work with. |
Wow, I didn't know you could use regular human nail clippers. That's cool to know. I HATE trimming the nails...always afraid to clip too far. My groomer does nails with the cut, but I have to do them inbetween times. I think a good rule of thumb is to only clip the very end off-then you know you are ok. I've always heard that walking on pavement is good to keep them down too. I've also heard that if you can hear the nails when the dog is walking on a surface (linoleum, hardwood floor, sidewalk, whatever) then they are too long, so I guess if you clip them and still hear them on the floor, clip them a little more. |
because of walking on pavement a few times a day, i have never had to clip Buckeye's nails. and they are really short. he sort of files them almost daily when he sees another dog. LOL |
I have tried a human clipper but don't like it. seems they seem to squeeze their nails a bit and my girls don't like that. So if you go that route just make sure the human clippers are sharp enough so they don't squeeze the nails. Smiles, :) Myra |
