hypocalcemia-low calcium Hi all-I actually do mean hypocalcemia. My little girl had a first litter on 6/3 and two weeks later went into hypocalcemic shock. Vet put her on calcium supplements and said to continue to let her nurse pups (3). Pups are now fully weaned and have been for 3 weeks. Mom has been on calcium supplements whole time but went into hypocalcemic shock again last Wednesday. She nearly died. Vet said it is quite unusual as pups are weaned. She did not start doing better until Sat. afternoon. Still on calcium. Vet is hoping to wean mom off of calcium in one month but I am scared. I won't breed her again-don't want to lose her. She did so well for her first pregnancy and delivery, and such a good mama. Mom is 5 pounds and had 3 pups. Any other experiences out there? |
Sorry, no breeding experience - but wanted to welcome you to YT and hope your baby gets better soon! |
Can't help. But welcome to YT. Someone here will know something. |
Did your vet ever give her an injection of calcium? The injection is faster acting and does more than supplements can do. In order for calcium supplements to be effective they have to be given in a certain ratio with phosphorus or it can actually lower her calcium levels. Many feel calcium supplements during pregnancy can lead to this condition. Did you feed her a good quality puppy food after mating? Did you give calcium supplements during pregnancy (not recommended by most)? |
I wouldn't breed her again either..... Hypocalcemia can be a serious problem - and can be caused by many different things. If possible, try to find out a little more from your vet - more about what has caused this, etc. Often this condition isn't even related to pregnancy. For sure - keep seeing your vet until your little dog is well again. Keep in touch. Carol Jean |
