those with older Yorkies It seems like so many of us here have puppies or young dogs. I am wondering about Yorkies as they age. Do they stay as active? Do their personalities change? How does getting older affect them? (not necessarily physically) Just wondering.... if any of you have had yours for longer it would be nice to hear from you! omega |
Good topic! I am curious about this too. Mine is not quite 2 yet. |
Good topic. My girlfriend had a female rescue , she lived to be 16 with no health problems. Look forward to reading other responses. Buddy is 2 1/2. Hope the males live long as well. :aimeeyork |
Max lived to be 17 years old. He had a very healthy life. The last year he was blind, but got around the house fine. Max was my first dog, always had dogs with the family, when I got out on my own I got Max. His organs where giving out on him, so I had to put him to sleep. I had him cremated and I told my nephew that when I die that I want to be cremated and to look in my night stand and get all my furbabies and put them in there with me. I didn't want them to be just thrown in the trash. Boy did I get off the subject. Max stayed playfull till he went blind. He was a very special boy. |

I have two 3 1/2 year olds that are a total joy they are still really playful. But know when bedtime is. My Mothers Two older Yorkies They are Almost 10 and 11. Are also playful they don't play as long but still chase the lizards and other critters around the yard. Not to mention if there is a ball around Tahoe is there!:D |
We lost our Sparky when she was 10. Her last new months she was not well, but up until then she was very active. Followed me eveywhere around the acreage. I still miss her when I'm out doing things. I keep the little guys penned up so I miss having one follow me around. |
My sister had a Benji and he is 12 years old and full of life...He loves to play catch and when I call her he just barks @ me when I talk to him. He's so cute and sweet! Koko was always healthy as could be til his last year(he was16yrs). He was blind due to cataracts but got around just fine. Loved to go in the car. Btw, in his earlier years before we knew better, he ate all the stuff they aren't supposed to have..even chocolate. The last year he started failing..couldn't walk, wouldn't eat. We had to have him put to sleep. RIP SWEET KOKO:rbyorkie: |
scampi lived till 15 and had no health problems at all and was just as active as he was as a pup and stayed being top dog till he died, it was his heart that gave up on him in the end. sasha i had to have put to sleep when she was 12 due to her heart being enlarged and the meds wouldnt work so she had 2 heart attacks, she was just like she was as a pup up untill she got ill 2 weeks before she died. and tye and zac (scampi and sashas pups) who i still have are now 12 and a half and are still bonkers lol :aimeeyork tye is going a bit deaf and has a few chest problems ie asthma and a bit of a heart murmur but still runs about plays and will eat everything in sight lol zac is starting to go blind but that dont stop him from playing like a puppy still and running about and going loopy lol. |
My precious little Bridgett lived until she was 13. Unfortunately around 11-12 she developed diabetes and then at age 12 -13 she lost her sight and then developed some dementia. Around age 12 she could no longer jump up on our bed, so we created a ramp for her and then just picked her up so she sleep with us. So, her last 1 1/2 years were not wonderful for her. Prior to that she was great. She loved everyone, couldn't wait to roll over for a tummy rub and was a wonderful little dog. She did weigh about 8-9 pounds, so slightly larger than standard, but had a beautiful coat. We loved her dearly. Ellie |
