Overfeeding him ? Hi All, my 4 and a half month yorkie weighed in at 4 lbs last weekend at the Vets. My breeder told me that my yorkie would weigh under 4 lbs, and i was just wondering if perhaps I'm overfeeding him? Dont get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with him being over 4 lbs in my opinion, but just curious? I feed him about 3/4 of a tin of Cesars a day, plus he has hard food sitting out all day, and we like to give him snacks like chicken and cheese.... Hmm, typing that sentence makes me think that i've just answered my own questions hehe. (Especially since I just came upon a thread talking about the harms of Cesar wet food...) If Cesars is really unhealthy, do you think there could be any affects on Peanut?? He's been eating it for 2 months! Thanks! |
I've always been told if you can feel their ribs when you gently wrap your hands around them, they are not overweight. If you can't feel the ribs, definitely overweight. Perhaps cut down on the treats, and try to find a quality dry food that he will eat regularly. He's still young, so I don't think I'd put him on a strict feeding schedule, but I know other's recommend a feeding schedule rather than "free feeding". |
I feed mine caesars and leave hard food out for them also. |
I feed Schatzi 3x a day, she is 14 weeks old. She gets 1/2 cup TOTAL of Royal canin a day (1/6 cup for each feeding). I also give her tiny treats about once or twice a day. They're just training treats, really small ones, like the size of a pea. Occasionally, about twice a week, I'll give her some chicken or turkey or cheese or veggies and fruit. Just little pieces out of my hand. I don't free feed her. I know a lot of people do this, but I am home all day and like to try to monitor how much she is taking in... plus, if I leave her food out long enough, my Lab will eat it! |
If your vet didn't mention he was overweight, I probably wouldn't worry. Since you were just there, you could always call him and ask, just to be sure. There are many, many of us with yorkies who grew larger than the breeder thought they would. |

My little guy was suppose to be at 4 lbs or under and he is already at 5 lbs at 6 1/2 mths. Following the growth chart his adult weight was suppose to be 3.75 lbs but I guess he was a late bloomer. He really seems to be going through a growth spurt and it shows in his appetite. I free feed also and offer canned food (Innova Eva sp ???) twice a day. I definitely know that I give to many treats but he doesn't seem to have any fat on him. I am just so thankful that he has been healthy so far. I think he grew extra just so he could wrestle better with his sisters who are a little bigger (lol). |

I have the pickiest eater EVER so I hand feed (that’s right) hard kibble in the AM. I know I am such a sucker. He then gets Cesar’s with a tiny bit of shredded cheese in it in the evening. I feed him about 1/2 to 3 quarters of a Cesar’s so it sounds like we are about the same. I know many people on here do not agree with the Cesar’s but hey it works for us and seriously he is so picky so if he eats it than he gets it! |
