need advice I have read the forums for quite some time and this is my first posting. Anyway our 10 year old female yorkie Amber passed away recently and my wife and i are heartbroken as well as our 12 year old male yorkie Toby. Toby has been taking it very hard he walks around with his head hanging down and just pretty much not enjoying life anymore. We were thinking about getting an older female from our local rescue but they said they have a long waiting list for females and they get way more males in than females, toby will not accept other male dogs and dogs that are bigger than him. We know someone that has a female puppy that's 12 weeks old that we were thinking about getting but our concern is if toby is to old to have a puppy around. So my question is do any of you think that a puppy would be to much for him or would it perk him up some? Thank you,for any advice you can give. Will |
Poor little guy. I am sorry hes so sad. I bet he would do just fine with a puppy. |
I bet he would perk up having a little pup around. It might take him a few days to get used to a new puppy but I'm sure he'd come around. I'm so sorry for your loss :( |
I think a little puppy would do wonders for him - it would take some getting used to on his part, but I'm sure he would love to have a little companion again. Maybe she will keep him young! |
I am so sorry for your loss. I think it would work out good. I got Cali at 9 weeks last year and Maya was a 8 1/2 year old grumpy loner pomeranian. I worried that it would be too much for her but it has been great. Maya has become much more friendly, wants to come up on the bed a lot something she never use to do and runs to kids and people now instead of going nuts at them. She puts up with a lot from Cali but lets her know when she's had enough or doesn't want to be bothered. I have never had any problems with Maya hurting Cali even though Maya is 13 lbs and Cali was 1 lb when I got her. It's been almost a year since I got Cali and everyday they seem closer. I think it would be good for you and Toby. Good luck! |
So sorry for your loss. It's bad enough that we feel the pain of loss, but to watch a little furbaby so sad is just heartbreaking. |
I'm am very sorry for your loss. I bet having a puppy around would make Toby perk up a bit. Good luck with whatever you decide. |
im sorry for your loss |
I agree with everyone else - I think it would be great for Toby - I think it would definitely lift his spirits! Good luck! And, I'm so sorry for your loss! We lost our lab a few months ago, and that was the first time I had ever had my own dog from the time it was a puppy, and it was devastating! I was beginning to think I was losing it because I couldn't control my sobbing and she was all I could think about! Luckily, I posted about it on here and everyone was so kind and most of all, they were understanding! This is a good place to be when you need someone to listen! |
Thanks, everyone for the replies.Amber had alot of medical problems since we got her at 9 weeks old,she had bad allergies, collapsed trachea and one ear canel closed up from the allergies i babied and spoiled her for 10 years she was my shadow and didn't like me being out of her sight. She stopped breathing in her sleep i blew in her nose and got her breathing again but she couldn't hang on. My wife thinks that one reason toby is so sad is because he senses my depression i feel guilty about getting another yorkie when i'm still in alot of pain over Amber my wife takes these things alot better than i do.I'm 55 years old and retired due to severe depression and other problems and toby and amber have helped me a great deal and gave me reason to face the day Amber was a huge part of my life and i'm not sure if i should consider getting another yorkie right now when i'm still greiving over amber. Please excuse my spelling i can't think to clearly right now. Will |
I am so sorry for your loss. I do agree with everyone else, that a new puppy will bring a breath of fresh air to your family and help Toby as well. A new baby requires so much attention that it will keep you all busy and hopefully help the healing process. Keep us posted.:) |

i have two 12 year old twin yorkie boys and then i got brandi who is about a year old and annie who is 6 soon and they all get on great.:) |
Understanding in your loss I am so sorry for your loss of Amber. I lost a very sweet loveing pup 3 1/2 years ago and I still think of him daily. I got my first yorkie right before he died. A new pup will Never replace Your loving Amber ,but you will build a new love and new memories with a new pup. The new one may help soften the loss for both you and your ole guy. I can really understand how you feel and wish you the best in the future you choose.:rose: |
I am so sorry for you loss. Sounds like Amber was a very special little girl who brought you many years of happiness. I lost Max almost 4 years ago, he was 17 years old and I was not ready for a new yorkie, but Lucky my chow-mix was so depressed, she wouldn't eat or get of the sofa, she missed Max so much. Now Lucky is 16 years old and now has four yorkies to play with. I think they keep her young. Like all the other posts I think it would be good for the whole family. Take care. |
