Picking up my puppy this weekend! Hi! This is my first post, but I've been enjoying your threads on yorkies for the past few weeks. My boyfriend and I are going to pick up our little boy yorkie, Teddy, this weekend and we're so excited! We've been wanting one for over two years, and it's finally happening. I have most of his supplies at home, and rereading "Idiot's Guide to Yorkshire Terriers," but I was wondering if anyone had any advice for a first time dog and yorkie owner? Thanks!:) :aimeeyork |

Ooh, I just thought of another question! I'm taking a few days off work when we first get him, but after that he'll be in a fenced area in the house - about 5'x6' - the breeder recommended having an area for him to move about, potty, and have his crate in it so he can crawl in and out to lay down. She said he would need his downtime, and it was actually a good thing that we'd be away at work (?). I was a little concerned at first, but I think he'll be okay provided he can run and potty in the area. In a couple of weeks my boyfriend's brother is moving in with us and he'll be around more during the day so Teddy can have company and walks. My question is about sleeping arrangements - should Teddy be left in the area downstairs with the crate door open so he can crawl out and potty? Or would it be better for him to be crated (crate door shut) in my bedroom upstairs where I can get up and take him to the pee pad every few hours? I'm a deep sleeper - will he whine when he needs to go? Would it be cruel to have him sleep apart from us? I'm interested in your opinions! Thank you!:) :aimeeyork |
Tam Tam, I just saw this post after reading your one from today. It will help Teddy if you have him crated in your room with you so he can see you at nite. It will help him feel better and probably not whine as much. Make sure he has only enough space to stand and turn around and then lay down in in the crate. Putting him on a table next to your bed, or like I did, in the crate on your bed (obviously depends on your bedsize and how many are sleeping in it lol) Good luck and welcome here. Congratulations, I know how excited you both must be!! I'm still waiting to get mine, he's only 5 weeks old. Be sure and get lots of pictures if you can because from what I see on here, they grow and change so fast. Mine has already changed so much that it's unbelievable. My breeder is really nice and sends me lots of pictures, so I've started a scrapbook. You might want to think about doing something like that. I'm sure it will be lots of fun to look back on it as they get older! Most of all, good luck and enjoy your little one!:) |
I crate Gracie in my room at night. I too am a deep sleeper, but somehow the mama instinct takes over and I hear her. She usually wakes up once during the night, 4 to 4 1/2 hours after going to bed. I take her downstairs to her pee pad, she does her business then back to bed we go for another 4 to 4 1/2 hours. She sleeps all night otherwise. I have an ex-pen set up during the day, with another crate, toys and pee pads, and food. She does really well, sleeps alot when I am not around. She cries when she knows I am home. I just ignore her until she quiets down, then I go cuddle and play with her. The crying is getting much better with each day. My one bit of advise? Lean on all these great pros at YT for info and help. And, get a good nights sleep before you pick her up. You both will be dog tired at the end of day one. Most of all, have lots of fun and enjoy! |
first of all congrats on the new baby. You will get all kinds of opinions on everything from potty training to what kind of dog food to use. It all kinda depends on YOUR dog. I have always crate trained my dogs, but I take em outside to potty. My 4 month old girl is doing great (better than I expected.)She has a few accidents from time to time, but has been holding it all night for almost 2 weeks. When I got my very first puppy, my vet told me to leave the puppy downstairs since it will whine all night. And to not let it have much room in the crate as someone else had allready commented. But I couldnt do that. I felt bad for the puppy. So I allowed him to have more room and he still did great at potty training. Anyways, my point is each and every dog I have owned has been different. Maybe you'll be able to tell when you bring him home as to how he is gonna be. Honestly, I think you'll do just fine. You're gonna fall head over heels in love with your baby. Just make sure to remember what it's like to have a puppy as they do grow very fast. Good luck to ya and can't wait to see pics..... |

My boy sleeps in the laundry room, with his crate open and newspaper to clean up. He whines for a few mins when i put him down but soon falls fast asleep. If i was single I'd prolly let Jake sleep with me, but the bed is where the hubby draws the line and its not causing Jake any emotional problems. |
