do your puppies ever sit quietly? i have a 5 month old boy and he is a furball of energy. i know that puppies will be puppies, and i know that they are curious and hyper, but there are times when i get so tired and just want to sit and cuddle and watch tv with my boy....but he can never seem to sit still around me...all he wants to do is play play play... and i get so tired. once in a while, after playing for a long time with him i just want to relax with him, but he continues to want to play. he sleeps well in his area (the kitchen and crate, he sleeps through the night with no problems, when i'm not in area he's fine...other than that when i'm there its none stop playing and i just wanna hold him sometimes, but he wont sit still for long and let me. he is comfortable with me cleaning him, cutting his nails, holding him for other reasons needed....everything except sit calmly on my lap... any advice... :confused: |
Sounds like a little ball of energy! He'll start to calm down eventually, even in the next few months probably. Are there any chews that he likes that you could give him so he could just settle down and chew beside you or something? Oscar is sleeping in my lap as I type this and he's always been a big cuddlebug - he definitely has his engergetic playful times too though, but he's got a good balance. Oh, and if you decide to have Poopy neutered (i'm assuming that he isn't yet at 5mths) that usually will calm down hyperactive dogs a bit (not lazy, just calmer :) ) |
He's a Yorkshire TERRIER. He's completely normal. At only five months of age, he will never tire of playing! :D He will eventually calm down some so that he will gladly sit or sleep in your lap, but it will be awhile. In the meantime, playing and interacting with you is helping him to develop into a well-rounded puppy both physically and psychologically.:D I almost forgot. Nice, loooooong walks help a lot to wear them down, too.:D |
he's a about 5 1/2 months. :aimeeyork everything you mentioned above has been done... i've tried chew toys he'll just take into his mouth for a second and drop in next to him and run around some more for me to play. i've tried treats, he just eats it and wants to play... tried the walks, he loves it...but once we get in it's all about play inside the house, unless he's tired then he'll sleep in his crate, but if i take him out of the crate or keep him out, it's playtime! he's already neutered, but that didn't change anything.... anymore advice? i just want to cuddle once in a while... :confused: |
Hmm... get another one to play with and tire him out! (just kidding) He may never turn into the lapdog you wish him to be... Some people complain that they think their dog is lazy... you've got the opposite spectrum! I still think that eventually he'll start to calm down a BIT... |
I had the same problem when Sadie was that age. Everyone kept telling me that by 8 months or so she would calm down some and then by a year she would calm a lot more. I thought there was no way, but they were right. Hang in there. It's tough (believe me I know) but it WILL get better. |

Dylan is 6 1/2 mths and I have just started to see him calm down a little. He still will not let me hold him for more than a minute before he starts wiggling but he will sit and chew on a bone beside me now. I am lucky that my Jack Russell will play and play with him and wear him out. He also loves to go outside and play (run) with the neighbors beagle. Maybe you can find someone close by that also has a puppy for playtime. It makes a big difference. How do you get him to hold still for his nails or combing? I have to really fight Dylan to comb his hair and I still have to try to clip his nails while he is sleeping. I've never had such a feisty one. |
My mom's yorkie rocky was just the same way as your pup. Now he loves to cuddle and lay with them but it took till he was about a year and a half. My Lucy is 10 months and she's NEVER cuddles. The only time she comes to me to be calm is when she want's to sleep. She'll jump on my lap and go straight to sleep. I figure it'll be a while till she settles down. Crystal |

At 5 months he is still a puppy. Chachi was the same way. He is 18 months now and will sit on your lap. He started calming down around a year old. |
Chloe was 2 in January and shes still like that. The only time she will settle down is in the night time when my mom is watching t.v. |
