Backyard breeder???
 

If you do everything you are supposed to do when you breed and raise puppies EXCEPT you do not show your dogs, does that make you a backyard breeder? If so why are we so down on backyard breeders? I understand the person who just wants to have one litter, or the person who just breeds because they have a male and female is a backyard breeder. However how can we put the same title on someone who is responsible and moral and educated with the breed only doesn't want to show?

Aren't puppymills and brokers the ones that don't care about their dogs and just want to make a buck?

I got Sebastian from a byb and she has been breeding for over 20 years, before we purchased him we checked her references & called her two vets. She is one the most caring women I have ever met. She calls me at least once a week to check on him and has even offered to babysit him if it was ever needed. I am glad that she does what she does or I wouldn't have my precious baby today.

I think they call those people hobby breeders?? Im not sure though,I think a backyard breeder is a bad thing (correct me if Im wrong somebody).Most of our breeders here breed without showing,I didnt even know that the two go together as a rule.Ladys breeder used to show,but Jessies breeder doesnt,infact she was just starting out when got Jess.

I don't like the term "backyard Breeder" anymore than I like "teacup yorkie". I think they are terms that carry bad connotations to them because we have heard so many people complain about both. I think it is totally unfair to "generalize" about breeders in any way. I believe they all need to be judged individually. Just because someone doesn't show their dogs doesn't make them a bad breeder.

I wouldn't even lump brokers with puppymillers because there are some really decent, caring and knowledgeable brokers. Sometimes the breeders just don't have the time to sell the puppies and they let someone else do the marketing so they can take care of the dogs. The brokers I know have very high standards for their breeders and they have a 2 strikes policy and they won't represent a particular breeder any longer if they do anything disreputable or a puppy has a health issue that can be traced back to the breeder. They are very strict and aren't always a bad thing.

BYB is thrown around too often to where I think a lot of people think if you don't show your a BYB. Makes me think of a Shade Tree machanic.....you use to be able to go to someone who could fix cars, they didn't have a lot of over head, hence your bill was lower for work done better than a lot of big shops. I am fixing to show b/c I understand the impotrance of having your dog judged under different judges to say you have as close to the standard od the Yorkie in the ring that that day. If I had something that was a minor fault that kept my yorkie from the ring and I could breed it with out passing that trait on to the puppies I would. Show breeders breed dogs with fault to one that will make a good match to make up for the other dogs fault. Its a study Hobby or Show.

I agree that it would be more of a "hobby" breeder than a back yard breeder. In all honesty, if we didn't have hobby breeders, where would we get our dogs?

I tried to go through a show breeder and they wouldn't let me buy one of their puppies, I went through a hobby breeder and they checked my references and interviewed my family before making a decision. (my husband did all the dirty work on that one) and I ended up with my adorable Tia.

I personally said (in the other thread) that I would not breed without showing. This is because I have an interest in dog shows and would like to have experienced them before breeding.

I purchased Zsa Zsa from a breeder who celebrated her 40 years of breeding ,
she never shows her Yorkies but clients are showing . She have champion lines . Is she a byb ?

It is so unfair to label all non-showing breeders as BYB'ers. Most Yorkie show breeders will do this..don't you find it hard to believe each started out in the ring..no one ever bred before showing. I bred a long time before I started showing and was treated like a leper, as were others who skipped showing in favor of breeding.
I found the best way to shake the label was to breed a potential, shwo it and win...then no one will label you a BYBer,if they did it would mean you had better Yorkies...please understand, not all show breeders are like this, many are so nice and helpful, you have to weed then out.

Thank you for all your posts. I got a little offended last night by something and I just wanted to make sure I wasn't the only one who thinks that showing is not necessary to be a good breeder.
I hate when breeders are lumped into 2 categories, show breeder vs. backyard breeder. Especially since I haven't really had good experiences with show breeders. And backyard breeder is such a negative term.

I agree with what you have said, but unfortunatly it seems there are so many of the showers that are just plain rude. I want to show becasue I enjoy the competition and the showing. I have always loved whatching the dog shows and wanted to be in ther middle of it, I also do it becuse I was told it could help my daughter, (she is a little slow) that the competition , the formality and the ring could help her. I am talking about jr. shows on this one.
I feel that I could be the nice ones, listening and answering questions.
The one thing I have noticed tis that the people in my area take showing so seriiously and it is such a closed off group that it is very hard for any newcomer to feel good at first. I was told be patient and in time they come around. It actully seems that they come around as you win...lol anyways. I just wish there woud be more willing people in the show ring. At times it becomes difficult and depressing to be around them, it seems like a club you just cant get access to.

I am lucky I have a mentor, and with that a way in that will not only give me a little bit of experiance, but also the showers are more willing to give me the time of day. Funny how that is.

Oh and just so everyone knows it isnt only this breed that the showers are like this, it is all of them, just a diffrent life I guess. Some I think take it way to serios.

My Bridget would be considered a BYB becasue she hasnt showed, but she is a show potential pup, go figure. She also loved her dogs very much and wasnt out to make a buck, but out to make beutiful puppies. I guess we just really cant be discriminatory about it can we. :rolleyes:

I do not want anything I have said to discourage anyone from showing. In fact I plan another potential myself...but it is good to be aware. I feel badly for friends who go to a show to meet other fanicers...only to be treated rudely. I think the best place to get to know exhabitors is at a Club sponsored show..a Specialty or a show where they have a picnic afterwards. Wait until the show is over and join in the activities. In MD the Yorkie club rarely allowed non-show members and that was hard for me to tell sincere friends who wanted me to sponsor them..seemed so unfair. No where in the by-laws does it say that..here in Florida, the club appears to allow a fancier or hobby breeder.
I have never been a part of the "INNER CIRCLE" and never will be, but it has not stopped me from achieving my goals with my Yorkies..and I would not use it as a excuse not to show..rude people are everywhere, but we deal with it.

You guys! Now I am a little worried about getting into showing - not that I would be able to until a few years down the road. Here's a question for anyone experienced with it (YorkieRose!;)) -- is it at all fun? I really think it would be a great hobby (though expensive!) and a way to direct my love for Yorkies into something fun and interesting.

I obviously will have to grow a stronger backbone though!

Also, the YTCA and other breed based clubs: what exactly do they entail and do? Are fanciers admitted or only show/breeders? I will do some more research on this when I have some more time tonight but if anyone has any imput or opinions I would love to hear them.

I went to a dog show once........along time ago.
It was okay. It was alot of fun watching the breeds show. The people showing were a little uptight, to be understandable since they were trying to pay attention to the their dog, and they had an interest in doing their best or probably winning, nerves, stress, etc......I think their underwear had creeped up their butts........lol......they didnt want bothered. Every hair had to be in place........they were preparing. I knew one person and watched them prepare, but didnt talk much.
I Know NOTHING about showing, but I think if I wanted to get some good insight, I would just attend a show and watch from a far, and if I did approach someone I would approach the doggies handler that just won or got second and go from there...I think this is a better time to ask a question then before entering the showring.........JMO

As I said before,I had no idea that breeding and showing had to go together in order to be something good:confused: Jessies breeder is Ladys breeders sister and although she doesnt show,she is proving to be a great responsable breeder.I am intouch with Ladys breeder and Jessies too and they both e-mail me asking for pictures,news,health updates..etc etc,I couldent be more happy with them both.I am going to breed Jess in the summer and Ladys breeder is my mentor,and one of her males is also going to be the father of Jessies babies..so even though they are so called "hobby breeders" and dont show (although Ladys breeder did years ago) I consider them wonderful people who love and care for their babies and are there for the owners of their pups ALWAYS.
I have come across show breeders in other forums and to be honest they werent very nice,neither were they helpful or understanding towards other yorkie owners.Infact,all they seemed to do was pounce on those that mentioned wanting to start breeding,especially if their yorkie was a little on the large side,with the "wrong" hair type or god forbid had floppy ears..etc,just because all these nasty things would be passed on to the pups and the breed would be degraded and not improved.I think its great that hobby breeders exist because thanks to them nearly all of us have our babies that may not reach the standard exactly,but to us are perfect:) I actually preffer hobby breeders:)
