crossing the canadian border i want to plan a trip to niagra falls in canada. i plan on driving and really want to bring my furbaby. does anyone know what i need to cross the border or if they quarantine??? are there any nice pet friendly hotels??? thanks. |
I think that all you need is a health certificate that was issued within 10 days of when you enter the country and proof of rabies vaccination; there's no quaratine period. I don't know of any pet friendly hotels, but I'll see if I can find any. Have a great trip! ETA: I found this site: http://petfriendly.ca/list/ontario.php Quote:

Niagara on the Lake is about 30 min more north of Niagara Falls. It's more of a 'quaint' little town with historic buildings, bed and breakfasts, etc. http://www.niagaraonthelake.worldweb.com/ |
My daughter just got back from there with her grandpa. Make sure you take your birth certificate and picture id. They called ahead of time. One lady with them didnt have it and they almost made her stay behind. I know you need the health thing for your yorkie but not sure what else. |
Actually you only need a current rabies vaccine if you are driving. You need a health certificate if flying. I am very close to the Cdn/US border and cross fairly frequently with one dog or another. You should really bring a proof of ownership even a Vet bill will do showing you own the dog. Some customs officers get a little zealous as to who might own the dog and whether you will leave it for someone in Canada or when you go home, the US people can question where the dog came from in the first place. Most customs crossings are fine and there are no problems. You won't have trouble bringing his dog food into Canada but US customs can be sticky when you cross back over. Yep even if you bought it there in the first place and brought it with you. Don't travel with too much crossing back into US in case they take it away. |
Since 9/11, the border officials can also be very strict about the people on board. Make sure everyone has current ID. We were asked for birth certificates or passports (which we didn't have) on our way back from Canada to the US, but they backed down and let us in. |
When we went to the shows in Canada, we were asked for health certificates and proff of rabies shots. This was just a month or so ago. It is better to be prepaired. The healthe certificate was good for 30 days. Debbie Ray www.sumtoiyorkies.com |

my sister in law got info on what she had to have before they left and they did tell her a health certificate no older than 10 days and they were driving. |
Niagara Falls is breathtaking . . . you will really love it. I am glad you posted this thread as I know I would one day bring my furbabies to Vancouver, CANADA and would like to know what is required to get past the border. |
We weren't asked for any papers when crossing the border (US or Canadian) but we just had all the records for shots. Niagara on the Lake is definitely more quaint, lots of wineries, small shops, etc. Niagara Falls is extremely touristy and hotels tend to be quite expensive. |
