HOw much are adoption fees? Just wondering. Is $400.00 the normal fee? |
Hi. I haven't bought a yorkie yet, but am still looking. I've checked various websites for animal rescues, and the adoption fee seems to vary. I've seen them lower than $400. |
I've seen rescue organizations charge that much. I know our local shelter gets purebreds in occasionally and their charge is under $100. |
depends. SOmetimes I think the "adoption" fee is way too high. |

It's a little high but sometimes they charge extra for the dogs that they know people will pay more for to help the less fortunate ones. The cuter, smaller, younger, etc. help pay for the one that will only go for say $100 and cost them $250 in care. |
Some rescues do a lot for the dogs, more than a shelter does. For instance the yorkie that my sister just rescued... she's giving him shots, fixed, microchipped, worming, a vet checkup, and his first grooming. It's not cheap. Then there's the cost of having the dog in foster care, food, leash, crate.. etc.. Plus she has to take losses sometimes for some dogs such as black labs where they cost more to get "adoption ready" than thier adoption fees (usually only $75). Charging more for puppies or small breeds helps to even things out or recoup loses. People aren't willing to pay much for a black lab, but unfortunately those are the ones dying in the shelters that my sister really wants to save. Then it depends on if the dog had health issues. Sometimes if the dog had medical problems that were expensive the adoption fee is a reflection of some of it. |
Oh I totally understand most thngs but I saw a rescue dog advertised the other day with NO medical problems and it was a Yorkie....600.00:eek: "adoption"fee. Those are the ones i am talking about!! |
hmm I don't know about that since my puppy was only $500. I know that my sister only asks for HALF of that price. I guess just email the adoption agency and ask them how they justify it. I have seen chi puppies go for $900 though on Petfinder. Sometimes I wonder if people are just trying to sell them under a rescue coverup. |

It all depends on the rescue. Some adoption fees are as low as $65 (I've even seen $12 once!), and for small, purebred puppies, I've seen them as high as $850. I think that $850 is very high, but a lot of times rescues use highly adoptable dogs to off-set costs for dogs that are less adoptable. A rescue I foster for charges anywhere from $350 - $450. They ship the dogs up from Louisiana (to Canada), spay/neuter the dogs, microchip them, vaccinate them, heartworm test (and often treat) them, and sometimes tattoo them. Of course, there's the situations like my foster who bring up a huge medical bill, then don't make it. Panna cost me $100 (then I had to fly her up here on top of that) and Cannelle didn't cost me anything (I foster for the rescue and they asked me to adopt her), but I gave $250 since she was a very expensive little dog to treat. It's true - a dog you might adopt may be very healthy and cost $400 (or even more) ---- But - another little dog may have cost $2500 in vet's bills and he is being adopted out for less - perhaps because of his age, his health, etc. A lot of people think adopting or rescuing a dog might be a great way to save money -- we shouldn't think of it that way - What we are doing is paying (donating) a "reasonable price for the dog we get" to the rescue service to help pay their costs and expenses for all their animals and help them find homes for all the animals they have......the young, the old, the healthy, the less healthy, and the most or less popular breeds. ---------- We had a post recently about a pup that just had $6000 in vet bills. The fees that are paid for all the dogs will help offset this little guys bills - and he can go to a good home too - for a reasonable price. Carol Jean |
