Just want to introduce myself and Ginger Hi! I have a one year old yorkie, 3.5 lbs. named Ginger, whom I am crazy about and I have a question which someone I am sure has already asked and answered but here goes...does anyone know how to get their yorkie to eat... Ginger just came home from the vet because of low blood sugar levels and I just can not get her to eat dog food, please give me suggestions as to when to feed her, how much and what. Thanks for you help... |
Hello and welcome to YT! with small dogs we have to be very carefull, if they dont get food in the morning, there blood level will drop and this may cause a seizure. Your baby sounds a lot like mine, I have to hand feed her in the morning to get her to eat. You may want to try some plain non fat yogurt in the am, just a tsp or so, just to get something in her. I give Lillie a 1/2 of a egg in the am so she has something in her sysyem. Then she will eat on her dry food throughout the day. good luck! any pics for us to see?? |
:welcome4: Try giving your baby Nutrical, it should help. :) |
Did you ask the vet? Have you tryed putting nutri- cal on the food mixing it together. The Nutri- Cal will help keep her sugar level up, mine love it some poeple feed it to them for treats, this I don't do. I sure there will be more people to give you better advise, just thought this mine work. |

Welcome. I wish I had some advice to offer you. I've never had this problem. You have gotten some good suggestions. Keep us posted. Great to have another fellow Georgian. |
welcome, you came to a great site for any info you need. |
Welcome! Try mixing the food with cottage cheese. Another thing you can give is boiled chicken and rice and gerber meat sticks. A moist food that alot of picky eaters will eat is Lil Caesars and you can get it at the grocery store. For sure give Nutrical if your baby has had low sugar problems. |
I agree, Nutri-cal is great for low blood sugar. If you don't have any, you can substitute a small amount of Karo Syrup. Just a little on the tongue will bring the blood sugar back up. I would give it to her in the morining, and especially before bed time. Send us some pics. Looking forward to seeing this preciouse llittle one. |
jefferspet.com has nutrical and some similar options maybe try to hand feed or mix with a little water to soften the food? good luck oh you can give then boiled chicken & rice also |
Sorry I can't help with your question but just wanted to say Welcome!:) I know my mother has been struggling with the same problem with her yorkie so I'll be watching this thread. |

Welcome to YT! I am sorry to hear about Ginger not eating. Baby has been finicky often times, but never to that degree. Would she take boiled chicken with rice???? I think the nutrical is a must!! |
Cali is 13 months and eats chicken mixed with a little Cesar's wet dog food. She also had episodes of Hypoglycemia so I haave to feed her what she will eat abd hat would be chicken. Good luck I know how frustrating it is. |
Welcome to YT ! Get some Nutrical, i allways have some on hand ! |
Welcome to YorkieTalk. My little Joey had a hypoglycemia attack when he was 9 weeks old and I'll never forget it or let it happen to any other Yorkie I have. I kept Nutri-cal on hand at all times and put some Karo in his water. He never had another attack thank the Lord. Wishing you the best with your little baby!!! :) |
