Ears? Can anyone help with my question? Got my male Yorkie today! First time owner!! I thought their ears stood on their own? His ears just flop down???. What can I do? Do I tape them, or will he eventually use them? The breeder used small clippers and shaved down the hair on his ears to make them less heavy. I havent' figured out this site yet... I hope I can find answers to my question when I come back LOL. Thanks!!! Jodie |
honestly, all of that crap they say about taping and shaving and everything just isn't true. they'll stand up if they're going to. I shaved and trimmed the tips of my yorkies' ears just b/c that's how it's SUPPOSED to look. The only reason I'd tape them is if it just makes you feel better. |
I don't really have any advice on the ears but how old is he. They sometimes go up and down if their teething also. I bet he's cute either way. |

He was born May 22. I hope they stand... but we'll love him regardless!!!!! |
There is definitely still time for his ears to stand - he's young. I do recommend clipping the hair to take off the weight and also massaging the ears seems to work, but according to my vet, taping or giving calcium supplements does not work. |

Congrats!! Hey Jodie, also wanted to say :congrats: on your new puppy! and :welcome4: to YorkieTalk!:) |
here is a link to a site where it expains taping ears and shaving my peeka is 10 weeks and his ears are up but his brother boo his ears are still a little floppy so it just depends on the dog http://members.cox.net/jrogan/ears.html good luck |
Just from my personal experience, the taping is actually what helped my Schatzi's ears stand. So in my case, I believe it does work. I had her ears shaved after I got her, but her ears were still floppy for about a week. I massaged them, etc. but there was no difference. Then on Tuesday of this week I decided "what the heck" and I just used masking tape on each ear, and then put a strip of tape between them to join them together so they were up straight. I kept the tape on for 24 hours and when I took the tape off, her ears were up! And they have not gone down at all. You could try it, it can't hurt to at least try if all else fails. Good luck! |
Don't worry!! I bought my 2nd yorkie and the ears flopped as well. After the groomer shaved them they were up in less than 48 hours. Its probably that the hair was to long and weighing them down. |
Puppy's ears go up and down. I brought my pup home at 8 weeks and his little ears were standing straight up (he looked like a little coyote -- all ears!) Then they flopped down for a while. Then one was up and one was down. They changed daily. At a few months of age, they went up and have stayed up every since. --------------------- I don't know about the rest of you - but my little Yorkie's ears are all over the place. Most of the time - they are straight up. When he runs - they lay back like a rabbit. When he runs up to meet people or other animals they lay back (because he's very submissive) I never taped or shaved his ears - Carol Jean |
