What do you do with your puppy while your out? I have a bathroom that I leave my puppy in. I put up a gate instead of shutting the door. He hates it though. I could put him in the basement (finished basement but tile floor) but would that be wrong because it's such a large space? He's 10 months. Thanks |
Both of my male yorkies are gated in the bathroom as well and that's b/c they're still not totally trained. I would definitely give them freedom once they learn how to use the pad 95% of the time. |
I usually give my 9 month old puppy free roam of the house but he recently got LP surgery and so I have to confine him to my room which is small but I do leave him in my furnished basement when its really hot out. Just make sure he dosen't get to the boiler or anything dangerous. |
I kept mine in an xpen when they were little. They have free run of the house now. |
My dogs stay in their crates, but I'm an at home mom who's never really gone for more that 2 or 3 hours at a time. They also sleep in their crates at night, but otherwise have run of the house and yard. |
I kept Dezi (when she was not fully trained) in the laundry room with a gate. Now she is almost 8 months and its fully trained (no mistakes) and keep her in the kitchen area and the bedroom area. I have three floors in my house. I block off the family room area because she loves to carry her toys to that area and I am afraid she may get hurt running up and down the stairs. |
you said nine months right.. i think hes old enough to be in a bigger gated room. i had lexi gated in my tile hallway around 15 foot or so.. i put 2 wee pads in there with her toys and food and water. of course a fan, she was just fine.. now at 15 months, she has the run of the whole house and shes terrific.... |
Mine is housebroken and has free run of the house. I just slowly expanded her space as she proved herself to be trustworthy of having the added space. She never has accidents. |
Tootie Nootie has the run of the house now, but when he was a wee puppy he was in a gated area in the house (came home from work one day and he had somehow managed to escape and was sitting in the big recliner like he was King - LOL!). He's been loose ever since.:) |
I'm glad you asked this question, because I ask myself the same thing everyday. I usually bring mine with me to work & everywhere, except to run errands. I've thought about letting him run around my bedroom b/c its hardwood....but I have a couch in there & he just recovered from breaking his leg from jumping off the couch about 2 & 1/2 months ago. Granted, he was only 3 lbs then & now he's almost 4 1/2 lbs. What I do do is keep him on a leash (I use a harness, not a collar). I have the leash attatched to a dumbell & in an area where he can't wrap himself up around anything or jump on anything. Somebody tell me I worry to much & let my doggie be free:) |
By the way, I LOVE your avitar!! Your baby's winking face is too cute:) |

Lillie has a ex-pen and when I cant watch her she stays in it, her bed, food, water and a wee-wee pad is in it as well, she really dont mind being in it. I cant trust her yet to have run of the house, she enjoys finding things and putting them in her mouth! hmmm just like a puppy! lol |
mine stay in the kitchen closed off with baby gates or on our enclosed porch but i'm hardly ever gone any time at all. |
Until Joey was reliable, he stayed in the laundry room with the floor completely covered in newspaper. Now that he's trustworthy, he gets the kitchen/familyroom/laundry (ie the areas that don't have carpet) when I'm away. |
we live in an apartment so when we go out, we leave nugg in the bedroom with lots of toys...we tried the bathroom but he ripped everything up, too small of a space i guess....he loves the bedroom......just enough freedom :) |
My girls get free run of the living room and kitchen...we have a gate up to the hallway to keep them out of the bedrooms!! We have hardwood floors so we don't have to worry about accidents...and they have plenty of comfy places to lay down! |
both of mine are housebroken & pee pee pad trained so they have free run of the house.. I also have hardwood floors just in case there is a accident..:D |
either their crate if it's only for a short time, or in their smaller pen in the kitchen while I'm at work when I don't take them with me. I refuse to let my yorkies roam b/c god forbid the guilt I would feel should even the most random thing happen and one of them got hurt b/c I didn't keep them contained in one spot. |
