I'm Freaking Out!!!! Well i was coming in the house from taking the pups outside and my sister was right behind me well i came in pup the pus down and then my sister came in and shut the door well i hear this blood curdaling screach and thought someone stepped on the puppies but when i turned around it wasn't coming from in the house my sister opedned the door and there was peeka screaming she had shut his foot in the door! I quickly grabed him he was screaming for like 5 min and finally he settleled down. Well i put him on the floor to see if he woulod walk and instintly new it was bad he wouldn't even put it on the ground so i called the vet and they told me to bring him in! As i was getting ready to leave he started to walk on it but i was gonna take him anyway. Well he cryed all the way there and really freaked out when i walked in the door because we were just there on monday for thier shots well i get back in the room and a diff vet came in from the one i see well i thought peeka was gonna have a heartattack he was shaking and crying and giving me that please save me look. The vet said his hip thigh leg and ankle seem ok but his toes are really swollen so he said we need to get an x-ray it costs $130.00. I said ok because he told me that if it's broke i had to be concerned about his growth plate. well they took him back and the vet came in to talk while he was back there i asked if it was broke what were we gonna do. well he told me he would have to put him under to put on a cast and i said well i've done a lot of reaserch on this breed and i know there are some anesthesia that can kill them was it safe for him to be out this little he told me i hadn't done a very good job in researching this breed because it's all the same no breed has a speacial need for anesthesia( I was P'OD) well he came back out and said the x-ray machine is down so they gave me pain meds and sent me home saing to come back tomarrow for an x-ray. But when i got home peeka acts fine he's trying to run around and play he's walking on it he's supposed to be in the kennal but he seems fine now. Should i take him back and pay $130.00 for an x-ray or do you all think he'll be ok? |
I’m so sorry that must have been terrible. I freak out when Ginger gets hurt, so I can only imagine how you felt. It’s really a tough call though. I think if she keeps playing and using that foot, I wouldn’t spend the $130. That’s just me though. I have spent so much money in the past playing on the side of caution. Sometimes it’s just not necessary. But if she’s not 100% by tomorrow and your gut says she needs it, then by all means get her the x-ray. I hope she feels better soon! |
I would definitely go back to the vet and see the regular vet that is familiar with the pup. |

[Oh! Poor Peeka! I would take him and get an X-ray just to be on the safe side... Kisses for Peeka! Francie |
he seems like he's fine when i take him out to go potty he runs and jumps fine and doesn't seem to be tender when i touch it aarrrgg i don't know what to do on one hand i want to make sure he is ok but on the other hand i don't want to pay $130.00 if he is acting fine i'm so sad!:( :( :cry2: :cry2: |
If it were broken he would not be running and playing. I'd watch it and if the swelling gets worse, or if he starts to favor it then I'd take him in. Otherwise I'd say it was just a bad pinched toe. And we know how a pinched finger can hurt. |
If Peeka is putting weight on the foot, there is no swelling and he acts fine, then I wouldn't go back for the xray. Give Peeka get well hugs and kisses from chattiesmom and crew! |
Poor Peeka !!! I am so sorry !!!!!!! I hate when stuff like this happens especially when its a little baby. I think I would keep an eye on it and decide in the mornning. It might go down by then. |
I think I would just keep an eye on him. It doesn't seem as if it were broke. Specially if he lets you touch it and bend it. But that's my opinion. |
When your pup's foot was hurting so much - an x-ray would have told the vet whether it was broken or not..... But - since he is getting around so much better - I suspect there is no fracture. Watch him for a day or two - if he continues to do well, I wouldn't go back for any further treatment at all. But if there is a problem - it will show itself again before long - and a few days spent waiting to see won't hurt your puppy at all. I worked in x-ray for 25 years and can't tell you how many people came in with a broken foot or ankle, etc., after having walked on it for a week. It didn't get better, so they finally came in. And, they were none the worse for having waited .... not for the simple type of fracture that your dog might have......but probably doesn't have at all.... Good luck! Carol Jean |
could you go to another vet? they may be able to teel by feeling for broken bones and doesn't seem to concerned about sedating smaller dogs? it's all the same? |
I would take him to the vet too. Just to make sure. $130.00 spent now can save you thousands later if there is something broken not to mention he will grow up without complications in the future. I'm so sorry he's been hurt. Give him bunch of kisses from me and Jazzie! Please let us know what you decide to do. |
i think i'm gonna wait i just feel like a bad mom for not getting the x-ray but i tell you he really doesn't seem like there is anything wrong now but he is on pain meds so i dunno? the biggest concern i have is the vet told me it's possible if he did break it he could've broke the growth plate so thats freaky. i just hope i'm not terrible for not wanting to get the x-ray done if not needed i really don't mind paying but i really don't have the money right now. |
Poor baby !! That must have been so hard to hear him cry like that...:( :( :( You know your yorkie best - if you think there is something wrong, even with him walking on it - I would take him in - but if he's acting normal and showing no signs of pain - then I'd probably do what you're thinking and hold off...... All the best to him and I hope that accident didn't do any real damage. They're SO fast that can happen easily to any of us with doors... Sending him get well wishes & hugs from the girls - I hope he'll be ok !! |
I'm so sorry you are having to go through this! I hope your baby feels better soon! |
Thanks everyone i love this place you guys are so great i know i post a lot but i'm a yorkie momma in training! lol the vet told me to contain him but has anyone here tried to contain a 10 week old yorkie(impossible) He cries so hard that he sobs for hours and when i take him out to potty he runs like there is no tomarrow i think he is ok but i will watch him for a few days! he is a mamma's boy i'll tell you what! when i take him in though they take him right in the back so they can play with him i'm like can i have my dog back? lol peeka says thanks for all the hugs and kisses it makes him feel better!:D |
Amber - Don't feel bad about not going back to the vet now. Your little guy may do just fine. And, you can go back to the vet in a day or two - if he doesn't continue to get better. If he's not in pain and is comfortable, it won't hurt him at all to wait a day or two. ***** Having worked in radiology for some 25 years - I can tell you that there are some fractures that don't even show up for a week or so -- especially hairline fractures. The reason for this is that they are so slight (with no displacement) that they don't even show up on an x-ray -- but a week later after healing has begun (new bone formation) - it is the new bone formation that shows up on the x-ray - but not the original fracture. This is common with rib fractures. So - cross your fingers and wait a couple days. Like I said - if your pup doesn't continue to get better or appears to worsen --- off to the vet you go. PS: I am sure he probably at least has a bruise - and this may well bother him and be sore for a few days. You might notice this when his pain medication wears off. He probably will have a sore little foot for a while. Carol Jean |
Awww.. Poor thing. Years ago (will not say how many;) ) I had a tiny little Shihtzu that I just LOVED. He seemed so small well, One day my 4yo was going out and got him in the door. I thought he would be allright after checking all appendages and found no injury. Later that day he would yelp when eating and I couldnt figure it out. Checked inside his mouth for broken teeth etc and the dog went nuts. I took him to my vet and he had a broken jaw:eek: . There was nothing they could do for it and it healed ok but it sure was painful for the little guy, Bonnie |
Well i haven't givin his pain med yet today cause i wanted to see how he was he still seems to be running and playing fine but every once in a while he acts like it bothers him for a min. I hope he's ok. |
How long are you suppose to keep him on pain meds? I know what you mean by not wanting an x-ray if not needed, they are so expensive, but how do we know for sure. If he wasn't on pain meds, I wonder if it would hurt him to walk and run, or for you to even feel his foot. It's a tough call, but only you know what you're comfortable with doing. Wishing you and your baby the best!! :) |
To be honest, I don't appreciate what your vet said to you or how he spoke to you. I would take him to another vet for the x-ray and I would definitely get the x-ray. But that's just me -- I'm close to paranoid with my babies. If they so much as sneeze, I want to rush them to the vet! LOL! :p :p But I really did have something to worry about before. My little Katie (who passed on to the Rainbow Bridge almost 1 year ago -- rest in peace baby) started losing some weight -- NOT A LOT -- but some. But I really didn't think anything of it. So I waited a few weeks and then she lost some more weight and I got suspicious and took her to the vet. After running lots of tests and doing blood work, we found out she had kidney disease. Now keep in mind that she didn't pass away from the kidney disease -- she was tragically killed when she was hit by a car. But I still regret everyday not taking her to the vet sooner. It's not like I waited months or years ... probably 3 weeks. But I wish I would have done it IMMEDIATELY. I still feel the guilt of waiting and I will never forgive myself for that. That's just something I have to live with. But I can tell you this, I will NEVER make that mistake again. My vet must be sick of seeing me but I don't care ... if my babies show ANY signs that something could be wrong (even a cold), we go to the vet that day (or night -- yes, the ER vet has seen me several times too LOL). So yes, I would still take Peeka to ANOTHER vet (I don't like your vet -- he just didn't speak to you in a respectful way) and have an x-ray done. I hope all is well with your baby. Get well soon Peeka!! Codie and Tia send kisses! |
he's supposed to be on meds for 5 days he seems to be doing fine on and off just a little flinch here and there when not on meds but running jumping plying fine and also it wasn't the vet i like to see that i seen yesterday so if i take him back i will take him to the other vet. It's such a hard deision to make i mean if i really had the money right this min i would take him and not care i'm just in between checks right now so cash is a little tight.:( |
Awww poor Peeka! I would have felt horrible hearing that scream or cry for help from your baby. I am paranoid with Diamond and I try to constantly look down before I walk since she is always at my feet. I am sure you learned from this experience as we all have but you have to watch them 24/7, especially when someone is opening/closing the door. I hope Peeka is doing better. I think I would take the dog to the vet just to be sure but that is me. That way, if something happens or it gets worse, you can't blame yourself or feel guilty. Have you thought about getting pet insurance? I pay around $25-$30 a month and they cover a lot of things. I am getting Diamond spayed in August and they are paying for that, it's pretty nice! You just send in a claim from the vet stating what they had done and then the insurance company sends you a check once they approve the claim. Kisses to Peeka from Diamond :animal36 |
