Breeding questions .. please help
 

Right now, we have our boy Lucky who is 1year and 8months old who is in heat. Our family is ready to get a companion for Lucky, but we're unable to find another yorkie. We prefer to get a female so that we can breed them. Because we're unable to find another yorkie for sale around our area for a good price, I decided to contact the lady who I purchased Lucky from. She happens to have another liter ready to be for sale next week and because i've done business with her in the past, she's giving me a GREAT price for another one. They came from the same father, but different mom.

My question is, for dogs, will it be ok to breed them? Being that they both came from the same father but different mothers. So half siblings.. Or will there be any problems/genetic complications if we do decide to breed them?

I can also go for a male (which would be his half brother) but would really rather get a female companion for him. Should I go for this? or keep looking? only reason I am really considering is because of the fact that i'm getting a very good price for a yorkie, and know for a fact that she will always be under 5 lbs and very small like our Lucky as well.

My breeder told me I could breed my two they have the same father but different mothers. I would not do it though. Mine are spayed and neutered now.

This is done, but only by experienced breeders who know the complete history of the line. If there are any genetic defects in the fathers line, the chances of the puppies having this defect is multipied exponentially. So I would not do it.

Boy dogs do not go into heat. Breeding half siblings is a huge genetic gamble and should not be done. Please have your pet neutered and just enjoy him and the new great priced kid as loving pets.

I would not personally breed any two that were related. Any health problems in the father's line will be doubled and more likely to appear. Do some research on linebreeding and inbreeding. I remember reading "not for the faint of heart and should only be done by experienced breeders with full knowledge of the lines and consequences". Most genetic problems have to be on both sides to appear in a puppy so when you have the same genes on both sides all of the bad will most likely appear even if neither adult has the condition.

So many things can go wrong with breeding anyway - why start off with a mark against you?

I would highly recommend Not doing this. Others are right about leaving this to the experts, because if there are any faults you will just double up on them breeding this way. Second - going from the past history you have told us - you and your girlfriend are still in college? Breeding takes a lot of money and time. Do you have the extra cash to spend on a C-section if she needs one to save her life? Are you able to skip class to deliver the pups? Are you will to pull up those sleeves and "Get in there" to help her deliver the pups - cut cords, turn pups, etc...?
As mentioned, once you breed your male, expect him to mark is territory - around your home.
IMO - just enjoy your male and have him altered. If you mean by saying he is "in heat" since females only go in heat, he is humping - perfectly normal and doesn't mean he needs a girlfriend. What is he going to do those other 10 months of the year when she is not in heat? LOL

Find your new girl - I love new baby breath and have them both fixed - this way you can enjoy them both without the fuss and mess. Let us know how it goes! And good Luck! :D

Well we still live at home and have the rest of the family to help out as well. But you all are right. Just thought i'd get some opinions. Looks like I will still pick her up but will have to get both fixed. Thanks again for all your insights :aimeeyork :)
