non stop snorting!! Sorry everyone i posted this in the "sick/emergency" section, but i just want to post here too since more people view this section... Ever since last night, Princess has been making these snorting noises through her nose... and then once in a while she has these "attacks" where it looks like she can't breathe and snorts non stop and she looks so scared!! these little "attacks" happen for like around 30 secs... I dont know what else to do but just pat her back and try to calm her down?? When I look at her while shes having these "attacks" it just looks like shes trying really hard to breathe through her nose but cant... her mouth is opened like shes going to throw up, but she doesnt.. then all of a sudden it stops... then the same cycle continues after a while.. I dont know what to do?? Oh btw, couple days ago, she went to the vet and got that intranasal shot where they squirted the vaccine up her nose... maybe it dried up there or something and now she can't breathe??? Has this happened to anyone before???? |
Sounds like a reverse sneeze. My little ones get these ALLLLL the time. They are normal, but REALLLLLY SCARY!! I thought mine were dying. Its just allergies! You should call the vet and ask them to describe one to you, it sounds just like what you are saying. There is really nothing you can do about them, they will stop doing them eventually. Post nasal drip is what causes it. She prob just has allergies:D |
I called the Vet office and they said to bring her in... I mean I hope the vet can actually do something about it because it bothers me when I think my dog has a problem, which is really nothing but they still charge me $46 for a visit... I just told the vet I would come in today... but you think this isnt serious? |
My little girl does something similar to this sometimes. Usually I've noticed her doing it only outside and only when she's super excited. It just started in June and she's a year old so I'm assuming it's some sort of seasonal allergy but I'm taking her to the vet next week. |
When Sissy got her intranasal bordetella, she contracted kennel cough from it within two days. It may possibly be this. If it is, the vet should not charge for an office call, just the meds. It is more a nuisance than anything, like having an upper respiratory infection. But, it took over a month of meds before Sissy was better. Hope Princess feels better soon. |
Okay, so I just got back from the Vet.. he said it probably is from allergies.. not from her intranasal vaccine... And he gave her another shot!! That is her 5th shot this week!! Poor lil girl : ( (She had 3 shots, then an allergic reaction, so I had to take her back to the hospital for another shot, and now, this one which makes 5) Hopefully it will go away~ :rolleyes: |
Are you certain all these shots are necessary? In some situations and some areas I know more vaccines are recommended, but I've also come across vets that are "vaccine salesmen" just to affect the bottom line. Do some research on vaccines and you will find that more is not better in most cases. |

If she is having the "reverse sneezing" attacks that are so common with smaller dogs - they are quite frightening when you first witness them. And, I think they frighten the little dog the first couple times they happen also. BUT - two of my dogs have these occasionally and they just have them. Neither they or I get upset anymore, and are over before we know it and we just go on our way. My Bichon does this almost every night when I first get home from work. With him, it certainly has something to do with his being excited about my getting home. Then, the other day, my 10-month old little Yorkie did this for the very first time. Now I suppose he will be doing it occasionally. It is perfectly harmless - and if you don't get upset, your pup will get less upset, and soon it won't be bothering either one of you. It just happens. And, you're right. It does last for about 30 seconds or so. Good luck! Carol Jean |

The same thing happens to Fergie almost every night when my husband gets home from work! She gets so excited...and forgets to breathe correctly. I don't think it is too abnormal. My vet said it was reverse sneezing as well. Nothing to worry about:) |
All 3 of mine do it. I think it is very common in small dogs. I've never had a small dog who didn't do it occassionally. I didn't know it was because of post nasal drip though. That's good to know. The quicker you can calm them the sooner it stops. I always pick mine up and reassure them it's okay. |
