Start with one Yorkie or Brothers? Hello, I am about to recieve my first Yorkie in two weeks and I know he has a brother who is still not spoken for. I have had many dogs in the past but this is my first Yorkie. I was wondering if it would be too much to take care of two or if it would be good or bad for the brothers to stay together. I am a little concerned the puppy will be lonely while I am at work and would like him to have some company. Could some of you please give me your opinions on this topic. Thanks. Darren |
Well, we only have one little boy, Yoda, and now we do sort of wish we had gotten two. Mainly so he's not so lonely when we are at work or have to leave him at home for a bit. If you have the resources and the energy and space for two, I'd say go for it. Just the potty training, etc. might take longer, or perhaps one will teach the other one. :P There's a lot of forum members here that have multiple Yorkies though, perhaps they have some better insight than me. |
I feel it's better to have someone to play with if you're going be gone all day;what can I say;I have 12 yorkies. jerry |
We already had an older dog to mentor Higgins and keep him company. But I would LOVE to another Yorkie if my husband would let me and if we could afford it. We're retired, so on a strict budget. Go get that darling little brother! You and your puppy will be glad you did! |
I got Lady first, then Jessie 6 months later and boy did I wonder if we had made a mistake.Jessies arrival threw Lady totally off track, she stopped eating, stopped playing, and most important..turned from being 100% house trained to being a new puppy all over again..we are still re-training her 3 months later. If I could turn back time I would get 2 pups together:) That way, they´d be adapting them selfs to the same new situation together and training them together would just be normal..I think it would be easier...and if theyre brothers, well that would just be perfect:) |
Thanks everyone. I need to run this by the wife now. :) |
I think it would be a great ideal to get both. I have 2 yorkies, Maddie 19 months, Rudy 9 months and Lucky a chow-mix that is 15 years old and is the reason why I have 2 yorkies. :p She got depressed whey I had to put my 17 year yorkie to sleep. She won't even go outside without them. Only draw back on having more then one is the Vet cost, not that yorkies are unhealthy, just the cost of shots, heartworm meds and ect. My three are worth every penny...............Cindy |
Hope I'm not too late in adding my 2 cents worth! We went out to buy a little boy from the breeder and went with the intention of only getting one, well, he had a brother and they were playing so good that we got both! Couldn't be happier, and that was almost a year ago and we don't regret it one bit. Sometimes they play like they were killing each other but then they lay down next to each other and sleep, never have they actually fought although they both are neutered. I don't think you would go wrong. |
I have never seen such a forlorn looking puppy in my life! My son and his bride came around noon and picked up their little Chihuahua, Princess. And Higgins is one saaaaad little fella. Moping around big time. I keep telling Don we need to get another little Yorkie. Don't you think so? I just knew you'd agree with me......but......alas....... :( |
What are your Yorkies' names yorkiegal719? We were tempted to get more than 1 too, if we had known back then what we know now... :) |
How neat I rember when I had to wait a week to get my yorkie and I was so excited. Uh and bye the way welcome. I have one and he does find I won't to get another but they are very expense to maintain. Good luck in your decision. |
Well their names are Andy & Barney. They were the only two in the litter, and they are a pile of fun. Yes, Higgins Mom, I think that you should have another, they don't take up too much room, unless you sleep with them and then they control the bed! |
Heheh, tell me about it yorkiegal! One little Yorkie hogs the whole bed! We always feel bad when we have to move him when he's sleeping because he's just so cute and peaceful snoring away. :) |
Hi all.. :) .Well I think if you are going to get the two..get them together as pups..training shouldn't be any more difficult than having one really...you will just need two pairs of eyes..if you see what I mean.!! :) Our first Yorkie..many moons ago was on his own for 2 years..then we decided to get another one. He didn't take too kindly to the new pup at first..I reckon he felt like he was being pushed out...so had to give our elder yorkie lots of special attention too. Over the years we have always kept 2 yorkies...when we have lost one..we have gone out and found another pup. to keep our other dog happy. At the moment we only have the one...he's 10 now..and just lost his soulmate in July but he is very independent little soul..so we are probably just staying with him for now. Go and get the 2 I would say...it will help for when you are out at work. |
