Danger! Sago Palm seeds deadly! :eek: I work at a One Stop Career Center conducting workshops and the other day as I was getting set up, a man in the front row commented on my picture of Tucker that is the wallpaper on my computer, asking if he was a Yorkie. After I proudly said yes, he went on to tell me that he and his wife had had one a while back and had loved it so... Then one day, playing out in the yard, it had picked up one of the seeds off of their Sago Palm and been chewing on it. The poor thing became very ill, the vet couldn't do anything and they lost their baby! My heart went out to him - he got teary-eyed just talking about it. Maybe I just haven't noticed, but I don't recall ever seeing this on any of those lists of poisonous plants for dogs and such. I live in Florida so maybe this is more pertinent to those of us in tropical areas but I wanted to make sure this didn't happen to anyone else if possible. :( Dana |
thanks for the info i never heard of that. i don't live in a tropical area but every other year our whole family goes to gulf shores for vacation and we bring dogs along some times. |

I would not be surprised if we see Sago Palms in SoCal. Landscaping services are highly demanded here in SoCal. With housing values going through the roof...people are doing all sorts of things to bring up their property value, and among them...landscaping. So it would not surprise me if Sago Palms are planted in lawns here. Be careful when walking your pets. I know my Yorkie is much faster at me. There are times when he just pops something into his mouth...only for me to realize what he is doing...and then forcing him to spit it out. |

Lots in SOCAL Sago Palms are extremely common in landscaping here in CA. If you go to malls, strip malls, the libraries, parks, etc. you will notice many sago palms, they have been used extensively in landscaped areas here and are highly prized in many areas, they grow, require little if any maintenance and are very lush looking. I would venture to say that at least 50% of the places that I have rented in the past 30 years had sago palms in the landscaped areas. Thanks for the info |

These have been recently sold in Lowes' and Home Depot around here, as indoor potted plants. Beware! |
YES , Sago palms are highly toxic to many animals, dogs, cats, horses etc.... & YES they are sold as indoor house plants even in grocery stores as tiny bonsai trees. They should NEVER be in a backyard or in a house with pets. When I lived in SoCal we had 1 in our front yard near the garage & even when trimming them you need to wash your hands thoroughly before handling pets or their food/water & dishes or bedding. |
I would assume this is for all dog breeds right? I need to tell my mom she has several of these plants and has two dogs thank you for this information it was very helpful and much apriciated :) |
